It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Is it okay to mod a rare head?

Nov 26, 2010

1. I never think of resale values with my dolls. If I ever got my hands on an LE, they'd get the same treatment as the others. Sure, I might be a little more careful - there are no replacement parts, I'm assuming - but never in regards to resale value. I could care less about how much money my dolls are going to fetch later on.

2. I think, dolls are for one's enjoyment.
Not touching a doll because is too precious, doesn't feel as enjoyment to ME.
I don't know if I would costumize a very rare, precious, antique/vintage/original doll, but if that was I wish to do, I might not costumize for felling compeled to respect those traces, but I would never really enjoy it. It would just be there.
Also I don't buy thinking about selling so that isn't an issue.

3. no because if you are like me you will completely ruin it and then there will be one less in existence and everyone will lose money 8D AND you don't get a second try. or maybe you do but once again : all the money LOOOOST
you can do it if you want but I'm never taking that risk ever again.

4. Well, they bought it, so it's entirely up to them. A lot of us might not like it, especially if it really turns into a train wreck, but they spent the money, so it's their right to mod, tweak, or just plain maim the head, even if the rest of us feel ourselves die a little at the thought. And hey, sometimes it turns out even better than the original, un-modded head would have looked!

5. Is it okay? Sure. Do I approve of it? No. There just aren't enough of that doll out there. An LE 500 I probably wouldn't think twice about modifying if that's what I personally wanted out of the doll. An LE 3, 5, 10? If what I want out of a doll that rare is what I can turn its head into rather than what it is, then I'm doing it wrong. With all the cheap Chinese almost-knockoff dolls around these days, it's not that hard to find a similar-looking standard edition doll to work on if all you're going to do is change the face anyway. To each their own, or so I'm told, but nobody lives in a vacuum. If nothing else, how do you think the creator of that doll would feel, knowing their incredibly limited and painstakingly crafted doll wasn't good enough?

6. If the person was willing to spend hundreds if not thousands of dollars on it, I'd say that painstakingly crafted doll was "good enough" to buy regardless of what the owner wants to do to it down the line.

And no, actually, finding similar dolls is not that easy, especially if a doll is limited. Most limited sculpts are unique; if there was a similar doll, just as good, at a fraction of the price (legit doll, mind you) the limited's worth really wouldn't be there unless a buyer had some loyalty to the company, or a preference for that company.

7. That's kind of like saying there's no reason the artist (were they still alive) should be upset about Ecce Homo.

8. Uh, no. These are dolls made to be sold to people to play with and customize. Not a one of a kind painting.

You know... your statement makes me wonder then, what of amateur faceup painters? Do you then believe they should not paint over their dolls because of their lack of skill? Do you believe that to be defacing the company sculptor's work as well?

9. I'd like to point out that the original question and my answer are about modding, not painting, and that we're talking about heads so rare that you could count them on one hand. But to answer your question, yes, though it has little to do with skill. I don't care if it's someone's first faceup or thousandth faceup, I don't think they should permanently alter a head that limited. The exception to that being if the doll has been damaged and needs repaired.

Of course it's not my doll, and the owner can certainly do what they want with it... but I'll be honest, I'm going to be shaking my head and cringing on the other side of the screen, because I do feel like it's defacing a work of art. It's defacing it even worse if the person who did the mod or faceup did a bad job. An unpopular opinion, but hey, that's why it's the debate forum.

10. I know full well what your answer was. You were the one that brought up a painting "restoration" that is in no way similar to the modding of an expensive toy. But, since you drew the connection, I drew my own. It seemed to me that by comparing these dolls to a one of a kind painting, both mods and faceups could therefore be compared to the "restoration" of said painting, seeing as how they alter the appearance of the doll as the restoration altered the painted work. But really, what does it matter, since your comparison of these dolls to the Ecce Homo is just like previous comparisons to the Mona Lisa: the two are hardly in the same ballpark.

11. Of course you can! It's your doll, you do whatever you want to do with it! Certain doll molds aren't protected because of their historical value or anything like that : D. While on the other hand I may feel a bit sad if someone has ruined the mold of my dreams by customizing it, it's really none of my business.

I sometimes wonder by myself why does it mean so much to some doll owners...why is it so bad to try new things and expanding the hobby and even making it a bit more fun? Why always stick to the same old stuff that, let's face it, gets a bit boring after time : D.

12. I believe it is all up to the owner if they want to mod it or not. They shouldn't have to stop what they have in mind for their doll just because the doll is limited to only a few or because others wouldn't want that mold to be changed. The owner is the one that bought it, so he/she should have liberty to decide the final look of the doll.

13. Hello there! I have a question about whether or not I should mod my LE. I hope this is the right place to ask it.
I recently bought a limited Fairy Jina head from Migidoll, and while I think its gorgeous, I'm not completely satisfied with it. It was an impulse buy because I had originally been saving up for a regular Jina. The only difference it would seem between the fairy version and the normal version is the eyes and the ears. I don't mind the ears at all, but the fairy eyes are kind of like a "dreaming" version of the normal ones, and I like the normal ones better.
My question: Would it be a good idea to go ahead and mod the limited fairy head to look more like the normal head that I've been wanting for a while, or should I just wait to get a normal head and possibly end up leaving my fairy head in its box for the rest of its life? I want to be able to bond with the fairy head, but the squinty eyes are hindering me. Would it be a waste of an investment to mod this LE since what I want already exists?

14. I say go for it! If it isn't exactly what you want, make it what you want. Even if the mod gets messed up, a little exopy and sanding could fix it right back up to perfect condition.

15. Thanks, ColemanMegan! I think I will actually keep him in his original condition afterall. I could always buy a normal Jina later, but I cant get another fairy Jina. This guy might just need a faceup since I havent given him one yet.

16. I wouldn't do it only because I'm not able, but if you're good in modding why not? this has already been said but the doll is yours and you can do what you want to make her as you want!
I also don't understand why some people when buying rare/limited dolls think only of "what will happen if I resell it?", I mean if I buy a rare doll it's because I love it and I would never ever sell it!

17. I would never do anything like that personally, and if someone asked me for my opinion on whether they should or shouldn't I would definitely say that they shouldn't
however, that is just my opinion and because the doll is not mine I really can't tell them what they can and can't do to their doll

18. You bought it, so you should be able to do whatever you want to it. Others may see it as a waste, but if you like it, that's all that really matters. Unless you plan to sell it for a larger profit later of course.

19. It's yours. Throw it in a woodchipper if you want, really. It's not like anyone has the right to tell you what you can and can't do.

20. It's a peice of plastic. WHo cares how "rare" it is? Do whatever you bloody well want with it.
