It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Is it okay to mod a rare head?

Nov 26, 2010

    1. To me this is like in games trying to refine a very rare weapon beyond its 'safe zone' xD; It's risky and a little scary, but maybe the results are worth it? (if you don't break it e-e)

I'm buying a Nanuri 2014 head and may sand down the elf ears to be human ears... But then, I also may not. xD Maybe better to just leave well enough alone......

    2. I think it would be okay to mod it. It is still your doll to do whatever you want with it. But I do think if you tried to sale it later, you should lower the price because it wouldn't be fair to sell it based on its rarity if you had made changes to it.

    3. It is YOUR doll to do what you want but you would have to be sure. Depending on the mod, you probably can't get your money back. I think it's a shame because maybe someone would have loved it the way it was. Searching and searching for a rare head and see that someone's cut a third eye in it D: Not wrong but I wouldn't.

I don't know if I'll ever find a nanuri '14, so maybe I'll mod a normal head to look similar lol

    4. No I couldn't a rare is rare for a reason so leave it be.

    5. I have to agree with this. Wanting to practice modding is fine, but modding a rare head would be like breaking an unspoken rule....don't do it.

    6. I think it would be fine as long as the modder was skilled enough. It would be sad to see a rare doll sold without its head cause it got ruined.

    7. I'd mod a rare head if I don't plan to sell it. This is only my doll and it shouldn't be original. It must be perfect for me. But if I wanted to sell it I wouldn't mod it.

    8. I wouldn't do it, personally. Just because I'd make a mess and I know it. :XD: But I think if a person owns a head, then they can and should do whatever they want with it. Rare or not, skilled or not, to resell later or not. They own that head. It is their property. It's not my business to tell someone what they should or should not do with their own property. So yeah, I think it's totally okay.

    9. If you plan on keeping it, then it's your doll... so I think it should be fine. It's your property, you put your money into it, so it's free game.

I personal wouldn't feel comfortable doing it myself, but that's me. I agree wit CourtneyC, it's no one's business but your own~

    10. I think a rare head should be left alone....there are plenty of other heads to mod...but you bought it...it belongs to you and it is your business what you do with it. :sweat

    11. This is a thing I've been thinking about lately with collecting of all kinds. I hear a lot of people talk about rare things that they collect and how valuable they are and then they criticize people who do things with their rare collectibles that decrease the value. I understand that perspective, and that feeling of cringing when you maybe see a person who has just wiped off a limited ooak face up. And if you are the type of person who sells their dolls or other collectibles a lot and kind of rotates through different ones or are buying collectibles as a kind of investment then you shouldn't alter the doll or whatever at all and you should keep it as nice as possible. But I also think that if you never plan on selling it why should you care how much it is worth. Who's to say any of these dolls will be worth much 30 or 50 years ago or what have you. And to you it might be worth more once you mod it to be how you'd like it and that will make you love it more. So in the end it's your doll.

    12. I think that if there's any possibility you may want to sell the head in the future then don't mod it. However, if you know the head isn't leaving you and you need to make it just right, then yeah, it's yours so why not?

    13. I think it's ok. What's the difference if you are not going to sell the doll?
I moded Soom Helioth (Yes, I did O__O)))) I wanted him as a girl, and he was not girly enough to my tastes. Now she is very girly, he-he)))
But I still don't like very irremovable changes to any doll head. I'm afraid to damage the it.

    14. There cannot be anything bad about it. If you buy a head/doll, it is yours - you paid your money for it, and you are free to choose whether you keep it as it is, or mod it. This question is almost the same like asking, "Is it ok to spend a lot of money for a doll?". Well, if you can afford it, why not! And if you can get a rare doll... rare doll, unrare doll, expensive or cheap, limited edition or not, doesn't make a difference. It is your doll, and you as the owner decide what to do with it.

    15. Oh for crying out loud. IT IS OKAY TO DO ANYTHING AT ALL TO THE DOLL THAT YOU OWN. Mod the hell out of it and then decide you don't much care for it anymore and tap dance on it, then toss it in a fire. Alternatively, never touch it and put it in an airtight display case under special lights in a locked room. Or anything in between. There ARE no "unspoken rules", nor is there any need for community consensus on anything you want to do with your doll. It's not a requirement to participate in any kind of collector's community to HAVE a BJD, so why would it be required to consider the community when deciding whether or not to mod? Your doll is not community property. You have no duty to anyone to preserve or maintain your doll in any particular state or condition. I understand the pre-modding "hope I don't screw this up!" jitters...... but this idea that there is a list of things that are "okay" and a list of things that is "not okay" to do with YOUR BJD just makes my head hurt.
In closing, IT IS OKAY TO DO ANYTHING AT ALL TO THE DOLL THAT YOU OWN.

    16. Hahahaha. This ^

    17. It depends on your decision. If you think, modding will make it look better or suit your style, then just do. But for me, I don't think I can do so because I'm so afraid to make it damaged or not like what I plan after modding. I'll just let it be without doing anything. The rare head is called "rare" because it's difficult to find a replacement and it may cost so much money, although you find it in second hand market again. So...really have to make this decision carefully.

    18. I think modding a rare head is like trying to adjust a painting by Leonardo Di Vinci. You don't do it as the doll will last longer than you (I think, never looked into the life-span of a bjd) and there is a responsibility to future owners as the care taker of it to look after it.

    19. It is if you never ever plan on selling it. Think really carefully about whether you are going to keep it or not before you take the knife to it.

    20. For the love of Pete freakin' Rose.

I am sorry, but I am not a doll caretaker. I am a doll owner. I don't buy my dolls to keep them all pristine for some mythical person in the future who MIGHT want to own one of them. I buy them to keep. Screw "future owners". They want that mold, they can go track down their own; they can't have mine, because I didn't buy it for them -- and anyone entitled enough to think that I DID buy it for them is going to find out real fast just what Tez is like when she pulls out the heavy artillery. (It's not pretty.) I have no responsibility to anyone else -- and nobody else has any responsibility to me, either.

      In other words...

      ^ That.
