Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Is it okay to mod a rare head?

Nov 26, 2010

    1. I personaly would not though, Iif it is reare then I would keep it the way it is. I would not change any part. but after all it is your doll, you should make your decision... Just do not regret after you did it. :)

    2. They bought it with their own money, they can do whatever they want with it as long as it makes them happy. It sounds snobby to say otherwise :\

    3. If you have the means, I say go for it. :) The dolls are meant for us to have fun with, and if modding = fun, why not? Life is too short to be worrying constantly about what others might think.

    4. If you have the money for it, more power to you. It personally boggles my mind when they do something like a gore mod though. The cheap in me tends to scream really loud in my head for about 3o seconds because it doesn't understand why someone would mod something so beautiful (and ridiculously expensive, definitely the expensive) beyond recognition. But hey, I know that if I had the money, I'd do it too. XD

    5. I would only mod a rare head if I was REALLY GOOD at it and knew someone would buy it for a heightened price (or if it was commissioned)

    6. But why should someone necessarily pay more for a modded rare head than an unmodded one?

    7. Jenny, I laughed so hard I nearly cried. I salute you ma'am.

I agree though. I think that a person really..shouldn't mod a one of a kind or a very very rare doll, simply because of the rarity and value of it. It's discontinued/rare/ooak because it's already special. I mean, I can't physically stop anyone from modding the living resin daylights out of their dolls, common, expensive or not.

What's the most important is that they love their dolls and it's the way they want it. Modded or not.

But sometimes...just sometimes when I see a gorgeous, rare doll that's been modded to such a degree that it looks like the handiwork of an autistic child? I die a little on the inside. It just saddens me to see such beauty go to waste, along with that fat hunk of cash.

Like I said though, what matters is their opinion on their mods, not ours.

      But still. :vein

    8. Like others have said ... If it's their doll they have every right to do anything they want with the doll... The community has no say in the matter. sure it will be hard on some ppl but they just gotta get over it.

    9. Although I would feel too guilty to do so, it is completely up to the owner and no one really has the right to scold them about it or tell them otherwise.

    10. Hmmm. You can never really know what's going to be a "hit" and "in demand" for the long haul when it comes to standard sculpts (and companies for that matter). I have modded some of the less well-known sculpts as well as some of the more expensive ones in my brood, but I have no intention of ever selling these dolls. If someone wants to mod, then by all means go for it (it's your doll and it makes you happy)! I actually like seeing unusual mods.

    11. Personally, I wouldn't. If you ever want to sell the head, it won't be as special anymore and you'd most likely have to sell it for less. But, if you're super amazing at modding then go for it. Your doll. Your decision.

    12. As long as you aren't expecting to get full price for it if you have to sell it after extensive modding, then go for it. My best friend is modding her limited doll, I cringe every time I take a look at it  because it's one of the grail sculpts to me, but it's hers and a wickedly awesome concept she's going after. So in the end I can't wait to see how it comes out.

She understands that with the extent of her mods she'll probably not get much of anything for it, and if it doesn't work out / gets ruined she'll probably have to throw it away, along with all the money she spent getting the head in the first place. Then again if she's done a great job overall and maybe it just doesn't work for her in particular, someone might be willing to pay more than full price for it :o

Simple mods like sanding or whatever, they don't matter much to me. It's the extensive stuff that I applaud when done right and cringe at when done wrong, especially on limited sculpts.

    13. I say it's a hit and miss. I think if there's another doll that's just as close, if not closer to what you want, you might want to sell the rare doll head so you are able to buy one (or two...or three!) of those other heads to practice modding, and if the head is rare enough, you should have enough left over for anything else :)

On the other hand, if it is in your possession, it's nobody else's business what you do with it. Nobody can tell you not to do it, it's your doll, not theirs. You can melt it in a pot and turn it into a flashlight. Nobody can really say otherwise, it is yours.

    14. I am completely aganst modding rare doll parts.
But I feel like it sorta kill the point in the doll.

How ever. If was damaged some how, then I would say, try to fix it with little mods as you can.

But every one is differant. And its their doll, theyy can do what they want.

    15. Is is okay to mod other collectables and art like say Faberge eggs?

Yes, anything in the name of art and creativity. Owning it makes it yours to do whatever you want with it. Buying art you dislike only to destroy it to censor it is not okay though.

Just because it's rare doesn't mean it couldn't and shouldn't be made cooler any less than a common doll. I'd hope the person modding would know what they're doing though.

    16. I think owners can do whatever they want to their dolls, it is theirs after all.

      Though I admit, when I was looking for a Nanuri or Juri 07, trying to find one whose eyes had not been opened at all - poorly or well done - was a very big difficulty. I know some people do have a thing for wide eyed dolls and modding their eyes open to suit, fair play to them. In fact, I never did find a Nanuri or Juri 07 with unmodded eyes, and settled on getting on a split for a vampire Lu Wen instead ^^;

    17. Well...it's your property so of course you have a right to do with it whatever you choose.
However, DO NOT expect for it to sell at full price unless your modding skills are out of this world. I have cringed at some of the prices owners have placed upon their modded 'masterpieces.'

    18. I've recently modded a rare-ish head. I sanded her nose a little, and the process was utterly terrifying. Before this doll, I never would have thought I'd do something like that.

I definitely understand how people could become upset over the modding (especially the less skillful modding) of a rare head. There are certain sculpts out there that I love very much and am dismayed by even the thought of someone modding them. However, sometimes in this thread, I have the feeling that people are thinking mostly of the rare sculpts that they adore, or the rare heads that later turned out to be more highly valued than many collectors initially expected.

In my case, the head right now does not seem very popular. I don't know if I could sell it if I wanted. Maybe later there will be a miraculous turn in the tide of public opinion, and I will regret my actions. For now though, I think if one intends to try to live with a doll (as I generally do), then it's important to be able enjoy that doll.

    19. What if the rare head is really ugly or poorly sculpted? What if modding would vastly improve the poor thing? Just because something is rare doesn't mean it's such great shakes. If I ended up with a rare doll that I didn't like, but knew I could love with a few changes, I'd make them.

    20. When the community starts paying for my dolls, then they can tell me what I get to do with them. ;)

I'm not really into rares that much - most of the dolls I like are pretty popular. I'm also not that much into modding - I may lightly sand down a jawline or nose to soften the sculpt (my BBB Charisma has her jaw, nose, and chin lightly sanded to my liking) but I certainly don't do the massive overhauls others do. But I would find it pretty funny if someone got their panties twisted over me doing something to a doll I own.
