Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Is it okay to mod a rare head?

Nov 26, 2010

    1. Seconding this!

    2. I personally can't do it, but I know many people who do and since it's their property, they can do with it as they please.

    3. Sure they could. Personally I wouldn't, and it would make me cringe a little if it was done completely wrong (only if it was a head that I had been interested in because it makes it seem that much more rare to find a decent one XD). But, I wouldn't want people telling me what to do, and I respect others who do what they want.

    4. While I wouldn't have the balls to do something like that myself (very much in the collector's "keep in original mint condition, protect 'rares' " mindset) there isn't anything wrong with it. I might think it a shame if I saw it, but again it's that collector's mindset that I had drilled into my brain at a young age.

Hell if anything it just makes the modded head even more rare because it's been modded and it's the only one with that mod. Enjoy your OOAK, be proud that you are the only one that has it.

I think part the reason why people see it as the "community's loss" when something like this happens is because it means that that is one less that has the possibility of showing up on the market for someone else to buy. I think it's the bit of greed that everyone doesn't want to admit to to wanting the chance to own that rare sculpt.

    5. If you want to mod a rare head then YOU DO IT! You payed for it so do what you want with it! But make sure you take your time because you could make a mistake you could regret later!

    6. That's like saying, "If you buy a house, can you do add-ons and renovations?" It's yours, you paid for it. Go for it if you want to!

    7. of course it's yours and you do what you want with it, but there is always a bit of sadness when someone takes a rare and beautiful head and demolishes it. if you could buy the mona lisa you're entitled to paint on a moustache and "improve" her, but the rest of the world would be a little saddened.

    8. I find this mindset to be absolutely disrespectful to everyone who does wonderful, beautiful mods on their heads. Likening it to "demolishing" or drawing a moustache on the mona lisa is not the same thing at all.

To be perfectly honest, it doesn't matter to me what anyone does with their dolls. I own a limited (not exactly rare, I guess) head that has been modded to hell and back. If someone wanted that doll for themselves unmodded, then they are perfectly welcome to go buy an unmodded one of the marketplace and not worry about what I'm doing with my own money!

    9. I wouldn't mod a rare. I'd sell it - hopefully for profit. The new owner could do whatever he or she wants with it. If I kept the doll, I wouldn't mod it because I'd probably ruin it somehow. I suffer from Murphy's Law. But then I don't think I would keep a rare because I would be too scared to play with it.

    10. i said demolish, because i meant demolish. I have the greatest respect for people who do mods. Most of them are well thought out and well executed even though they are a very personalised taste, and of course they have to suit no one but the owner. Some might be a little clumsy, but again it's the owner's choice, as everything in this hobby is. I mod my own dolls when i feel inclined.
I still think it's a little sad when a very rare doll is hacked to pieces. I remember seeing a rare head on ebay a few years ago that had particular elf ears (don't remeber the name of the mold). It was a new release and the owner hadn't had if for long but had done a drastic mod to the ears, and then decided to sell it. yes it was her's to mod etc. etc. but it seemed sad that she had a new very limited doll, modded it a lot (poorly btw) and then wanted to sell it at a profit.

There is no right and wrong in this hobby, or any other really, when it comes to how you deal with your own property.

    11. I agree with the "it's your property, you can do what you like with it theory", but I also tend to think that there are quite a few modders out there who are inclined to delude themselves as to the beauty of their work. Some can turn out really well and be stunning, but I've seen a lot of amateur attempts that really look hideous. Or even people who buy a limited MD/release and do a REALLY bad face-up then proudly post it for you to admire. It's tough when you look at the photo and just know they are going to be proudly posting photos of their darling on the thread for ages.

    12. Okay, so you decide to mod a rare head.

What if you slip up, and it goes wrong?
Ooooft, it doesnt bare thinking about!

Is it worth it? :/ Could you not just buy a similar head and work on that?
Its probably not the main issue to the owner, but think how much the head will be worth.

    13. If it's my doll and I know what I'm doing, darn right I'm going to do it.

I used to be in the MLP scene years back and I got scolded for customizing a rare my little pony and I said the same there. My pony, I do what I like.

    14. When you had a head that's perfect for your caharacter project but need modifications, I think it's normal to do this.
BUT, no do yourself if you're not able to. So many people think that they're artist or able to do some mod (huge or little)...

It will be a huge waste to do bad mod' on it, because of the rarity of the head. You cannot re-try it.
But a rare head with modifications is most rare than first. Your head will be unique.

    15. You can always get it fixed. There is no such thing as "ruined" in this hobby, unless it breaks into a million pieces. There are always people with enough skill to fix it. There's someone on here who's dolls were caught in a fire. She was able to fix them up completely.

For me, if I want to mod a rare head, I'll do it. It's my business and I am not going to give in to peer pressure of people who are jealous they didn't get the head.

    16. No one can stop you and you have the right do do what you will with your doll. However I do feel some mods are just wrong to do. For example:
A dreaming version of a head is rare, yet its eyes open counterpart is quite common. If someone mods the dreaming version into a normal version it drives me crazy. Not that I would ever say anything to the person but I just don't understand why they do it.

    17. People always bring up the eye opening mods without seeming to realize that when someone mods a dreaming head that the result is not the same as the open eyed version. I personally like sleeping and dreaming heads, but I can understand why a lot of people prefer open eyed dolls, and consequently all my dolls thus far are open eyed as that tends to work better for my characters.

    18. I loved my Amber so much, but her ears were wrong for the character. I didn't trust my own artistic talent in modding her ears, so I had a professional (well, *I* call her a professional!!) do them for me and nobody has said a bad thing about it to me. I wanted her to retain her true beauty, and this is the exact reason I chose to have someone with more experience in handling this mod. :)

Sure, it may be sacreligious in many's eyes to do such a thing, but I feel that as long as the mod is done well, it really truly isn't that bad.

    19. I can definitely vouch for this. I have three sleeping/dreaming heads which were modded, and none look like their OE version. One is quite rare (Soom Euclase), one quite common (Delf El), and one practically unknown. (DBdoll Yu) I sent all three to the same modder (Buff) because I didn't trust myself and she's excellent at giving them the 'look' that I want. Not fully open, but not closed either.

I definitely waffled over the Euclase when I was first deciding to send him out, but I couldn't really enjoy him as he was and I had no interest in selling him. His mods make him even more beautiful to me, and it's been... two years now?

The only 'rare' head I've modded myself was a Delf Juri, which I personally don't consider to be particularly rare since I see it on the marketplace all the time for fairly low prices. So I wasn't too concerned, and he turned out fine.

Now, would I mod a LE30 head? Hell no. x_x That might be someone's dream doll.

    20. THIS.

all of these threads saying "is it okay to do this" kind of make me go o.O

Its your doll. Its your money. If you want to mod your rare head, and you feel you have the skills to do it, please do it! I know, for community purposes, some of us really contemplate if it's "okay." but honestly?

You are harming NOBODY by modding your rare head. You're not even harming your plastic doll! This is YOUR money, and please remember that you can NEVER please everybody. Whats considered RIGHT to someone may be considered WRONG to another. Do what's right for YOU. :)
