Is it okay to mod a rare head?

Nov 26, 2010

    1. I'm not the person to tell anyone what they can or can't do with there own dolls. For myself , I'll mod any kind of doll if it doenst fit my wishes perfectly. Like sanding the nose and cheeks a bit or adding teeth if it fit's the charakter even adding scars to the mold is not a problem in my case.
In some cases I don't like it what owners do with there dolls but if they love it why not.

    2. Ahhh but the question is, what can you live with if the mod does not go well?
if it were a vote I am for modding common heads and leaving rare heads as is,
I buy dolls not only with enjoy factor but I know eventually I will share them when thier day comes to go or I want a new doll, its part of the fun for me so I want them to retain thier value, modding a rare head may hurt its value when I am ready to sell. If the head is not pleaseing to me once I get it I go ahead and sell it and buy heads (rare or not) that I will enjoy photographing and looking at.
I personally bought one modded head 7 years ago and it is my least favorite doll and is still here for that reason - no one would buy it.

    3. agree.
it's your f****ing doll, you do what you want with it. OF COURSE.
even if if people say "it would break my heart" (like I would... depending on the mod of course) it doesn't matter, you do what you want to make your doll really feel like yours!
instead of asking "is it okay?", people should just ask "would YOU do it?". so instead of having 80% of the answers being "it's your doll you can do what you want with it" we'd hear more opinions.

but to answer the answer of this topic: I wouldn't mod a limited doll. eye opening would be the ONLY thing. I know I couldn't do anything else right and I know mods lower the price (even eye opening lower the price sometimes but I know at least I won't completely ruin the head by doing that only).

    4. I don`t think I would ever be able to mod a rare head. It`s something about only being like 3 heads in the whole world, that makes it feel all wrong to me to mod it.

    5. Unless the head breaks into a thousand pieces, it will be fixable. There are dozens of talented modders here on the forum that would be able to fix it.

    6. I think that doing whatever you want with your doll is your right because it is yours, rare or otherwise. Is it looked down upon? Probably very much so. But I feel rather strongly about a person's doll being theirs and what they wish to do with it is their own choice. You certainly could just buy another head, but what if you don't want to? However, like others have said, most times if you get something so rare (especially considering rare usually = more $$$) it is because you love it the way it is and would not really want to mod it... but i also understand seeing something ALMOST perfect if you could jut make this or that small change.

I guess my real point is just that it would probably be looked down upon, but it is your doll to do with what you wish.

    7. Sometimes I do see it as a "waste", but only if the modification was badly done. Likewise, I think it's a shame when I see a very rare/expensive sculpt with a terrible face-up/wig/etc. Aside from that, I don't think there's anything wrong with modding a rare head, I mean...the owner has the right to do whatever they want with it, since it's theirs! xD &I don't think that modding a rare sculpt causes it to lose "its original rarity", nor is it "a loss". xD I mean...it's still that sculpt....just with a modification.

    8. Is it okay? Of course, why not? Once you purchase it, legally it IS yours. You hear everyone saying "do what you want since its yours" and that is entirely true. It may sound like just a bunch of sap but its entirely true. A rare head, no matter how rare, is just an object. Its not like youre doing experiments on a rare animal that is alive, its a doll. A piece of resin that has been molded to look like a head in which the specifics are not mass made.

Once you have purchased an object and it was legally been obtained, its all yours. Whether you bash it with a hammer (which not that i would ever do >,>) or whether you keep it in a velvet lined cushion in a glass case its all up to you.

    9. It's your property, so you are free to do with something what you wish. I feel a little dismayed for someone who has saved up so much money to get their doll only to feel that the whole community has a say in what they do with it. It's not true.

Even if the head you bought is OOAK and will never be produced again, if you wanted to take the eyelids off, put a third eye in it's forehead and sand the nose down, no one really has the right to stop you...and most mods are heck of a lot more subtle than that :)

Also, unless the head is modded extremely badly, there are ways of repairing a bad mod job. The head will never look 100% the way it had, but it can look just as good in the right hands. The thing is, unless you try your hands at modding and build up your own experience, you never will acquire the skills to mod something well, everyone has to start somewhere with their projects and if you want to start with a rare head, that's your business.

I agree with NASHI a little in that if the head is extremely rare and has been modded, sometimes it is a little saddening as there is now one less head in original condition...but this is only in case the head would ever be sold again. There are some collectors who buy for life and who would never re-sell their dolls...so if that was the case, modded or not, the head wouldn't be on the market anyway.

    10. For me it's not okay. Modding a really rare head.. something like DS Bermann(best example for me) or one-off head.. even if it's a pretty good mod, feels like killing an endangered species of animals))
But I never say anything about it. It's your property of course, nobody can judge you for this. I might only condemn your act in my mind and nothing else I say or do. It's unacceptable for me, but I will never try to tell you(or anybody else) what to do or don't do.
So if it's okay for you, do whatever you wan't and don't care about other's opinions))

    11. One part says - It's your doll, what the hey? Go ahead.
Another part says - Why mod a RARE head? It is like if someone owned a Monet painting (let's just say it was passed down in the family). Just because you COULD paint over it or edit it doesn't mean you should.

    12. I think it's their doll and if they don't like it in this shape, why can't they mod it as they would a standar one? I know it can make some people mad if they were longing to have one in its original shape, but it's just nonsense moaning. I can always be bothered, but I don't have the right to, IMHO.

    13. If I wanted to use an extremely rare head to practice my aim with fire crackers, it's my business. No one else's. The only crime here is the colossal waste of money to do so.

    14. I'm kinda half and half, I agree with 'its yours you can do with it how you wish' but that doesn't mean you have to, unless you're planning to never resell then I'd say go ahead, I wouldn't mod a super rare head cause well, I'm buying that head for its specific look aren't i? I'm spending $1500+ for one head because I love the current aesthetics of it, not because I want to change it.

If i wanted to mod something i'd find a cheaper similar alternative and mod it to how I want, rather than change something of that price (even if it was bought at its original price, I couldn't bring myself to do it) to achieve similar results. Mainly because the collector inside me says "No! this wont be made again and this faceup cant be reproduced if you wipe it!" but if someone personally feels comfortable doing it then go ahead, but personally I couldnt for the reasons stated above, if I'm going to buy such an expensive rare head, I'm buying it because I love it as is, not because I think I could do one better.

Thats just my opinion though :)

    15. I agree - I don't see why anyone should ask the community whether it's OK or not. Of course it's OK, it's your own doll.

I personally think it's a waste, and I wouldn't do it myself. I'd be afraid of ruining it. I wouldn't even buy a rare head unless I totally fell in love with it, and in that case, why would I want to change it?

    16. I think small mods are fine; and as long as you know what you're doing, if you need to do an extreme mod to make the doll fit the character then it's fine- depending on the mod. If you're turning the head into a different species where it will look nothing like the original sculpt anyway, then why not just use a different head? Say, you're turning it into a Na'vi (it's the first thing that came to mind. I guess I've been looking at too many of them. xD). There are plenty of non-rare heads you could use for the same thing. Minor mods like nose or eye reshaping or something doesn't seem so bad, however.

    17. I do believe that if the dolls is yours you can do entirely what you want with it. For me personally, modding a rare doll, makes me anxious. I sometimes get a purist mentality even though I'm a doll customizer. I've actually turned down a few commissions because I had requests to mod a rare doll. Two of my clients took my advice, and the third said that they didn't care if the doll was rare.

What I love about BJDs is that I can customize my doll with wig changes and eyes, and make the doll "my own." I acquired a tan Elfdoll RuRu and had full intent to wipe her paint and customize her. After I had her in hand, I just couldn't do it. She was so beautiful. I had a blast changing her look with wigs and eyes, though. I did, to my excitement, end up getting another tan RuRu that needed some TLC and had a blast customizing her.

    18. If you paid for it, it's absolutely 100% your right to do with it whatever you wish. It's your property, and if you want to mod it or smash it to bits, that's on you.

However, I do believe that others have every right to feel that it's wrong on the part of the owner. Being harassed about what you do with your own stuff is NOT ok, but you can't expect everyone to feel super hunkie-dory if you just mutilated a hard to find head/body that would have been cherished by hundreds of others in it's original form. If you post it out where everyone can see it, you should be prepared for some to disagree with your decision (in a polite way, but this is the same for any subject).

This recently happened within another doll community. A customizer used a fairly rare doll whose value has skyrocketed in the past few months. The face sculpt and skin tone is relatively the same for most of the dolls in this line, so it was a real wonder as to why she felt the need to use this particular doll. It was almost as if she was flaunting the fact that she could. She intends to sell the doll anyway, as her customized creation, so it wasn't as if she was trying to make her into her own character to cherish and love.

It's just a pity that one more of these dolls is now destroyed, when it wasn't necessary.

    19. To be honest, this question has never occurred to me until now. Also I never had any interest in limited edition heads until now too. The idea of somebody having a limited edition head that I want and could potentially buy on the Marketplace in the future, and modifying it beyond recognition scares me, but only light heartedly. In the long run, I don't mind what other people do to their doll. And I would like that same freedom if I ever felt the need to modify a rare head myself...I want to be able to do anything possible to perfectly achieve my characters. There'll always be other dolls, right?

Plus, it is still just.a.doll. :) (a special, pretty, amazing, beautifully customiseable collectable doll...BUT still JUST A DOLL.)

    20. I say do what you want. My whole family and most of my friends think this hobby is a waste of money. So if someone else doesn't agree with my choices they can get in line.
