Is resin type/texture/look important to you?

Dec 27, 2013

    1. Maybe airbrush a matte, might turn out better than spray can? Or airbrush the desired skin tone in matte flesh paint? Might help..airbrush looks slightly different..plus sanding in between coats lightly..

    2. I do not like glossy resin. But perfect sculpt comes first. ;)

    3. I do not really like the shiny resin, I much prefere matt resin.
I do like my dolls to feel solid so i like thick resin. Although i love dainty hands

    4. I myself can't stand shiny resin as it just makes a doll look cheap in my own opinion. I really like french resin and environmental resin for their values however, french resin generally looks very pretty and environmental resin halts yellowing a lot more than normal resin can. But that's my own view :)

    5. I'm a fan of French/ environmental resin myself. I like the translucency and even heavily yellowed French resin is still lovely to me (weird, I know). I prefer hefty thick resin over thinner and shiny or waxy looking resin is a turn off for me. Texture is also very important. I've had dolls with thin, slick resin that just seemed brittle and they've all eventually been sold off.

My absolute favorite resin is ShinyDoll. They have a nice matte look, the resin is thick and has a nice texture, not too toothy not too smooth, and it's the most stable resin I've ever seen yellowing wise. My first ShinyDoll was bought in 2007 and my newest in 2012, plus I've bought several more in between. They all match perfectly. There is absolutely no yellowing or variation in color or texture that I can detect. It's pretty cool!

I think my second favorite is Volks. It's hefty and has a nice texture and even my old, heavily "yellowed" girl looks like creamy ivory rather than butter yellow. Volks resin just seems to grow old gracefully. So yes, resin quality, texture, thickness, and color stability are all very important to me.

    6. I like toothy, heavy resin the best. I don't care for shiny resin as much, but if the sculpt is great I would overlook the texture.

    7. I like companies that cast a little thicker, and I hate French resin. I'm very new and would rather not fight such a quick yellowing process until I'm more comfortable and experienced with the hobby. I like my resin to have some shine since it feels like it imitates human skin's healthy glow, plus it looks pretty cute with the proper blushing.

    8. I really do prefer a matte resin, much like the old soom cream white/ normal skin. But I must say I find volks pureskin normal to be some of the nicest resin I have ever seen, there is a slight translucence to it that makes it seem more skin like.

Though I must say I dislike french resin and its tendency to yellow quickly.

    9. I dislike shiny resin like a lot of others here. Slippery resin is also not my favorite. I prefer the slightly tooth to my Dollshe boy's resin the most. As for weight, my Saint weighs twice, give or take, what any of my others do, and while that weight does have a nice quality feel, there have been times when I reached over to grab him with one hand at an odd angle and strained a wrist slightly. :XD: As such, I'm more likely to move one of the others around the house with me on a day-to-day basis. I like both ranges of weight, one is just a bit more suited to carting around.

I also cannot stand (on my own dolls, I am not bashing anyone else's) French resin, or environmental resin, or anything with that waxy or slightly translucent look. I hope I am not stepping on anyone's toes here when I say that it brings to mind rubbery Barbie dolls or the 'cheap' plastic of some of those off-brand toys I had as a kid. This is a dealbreaker for me, and has caused me to steer clear of some companies whose sculpts I otherwise really liked.

    10. Resin texture is important to me. I like smooth resin and am really turned off by the rougher texture of some dolls. It feels too grainy and unfinished to me.

    11. I'm not a fan of shiny resin, there's just something about it that I really really dislike and I don't think I would/could ever buy a doll that I knew had shiny resin. But then again I'm not a fan of gloss or a shiny sheen to things in general, I find matte to be overall more appealing whether its a doll or not. I also don't think that I could live with a doll that had transparent resin, (I want to like it as I do think that the idea of it is cool) it honesty creeps me out and I'm not particularly sure why.
The texture does not really bother me either way, I like a toothier/slightly rough texture but smooth is also fine.

    12. The only thing that really bothers me (like many others here) is shiny resin. :|

    13. I love toothy resin the most, like that found on my Dolkot Day and DreamingDoll Lia. I'm not personally a fan of French resin, although I (unknowingly) bought an environmental resin Loongsoul Momo. Luckily for me she's not shiny at all so she blends into my crew rather nicely.

    14. I don't own many dolls yet, but from the pictures I've seen of various dolls, I think what resin quality turns me off is shininess. I've seen pictures of some dolls where the resin is so shiny it looks like plastic.

    15. Considering what I've seen so far, I have to say I LOVE environmental resin. That natural translucency reminds me of human skin in how it catches light, and I love the texture of it. It works well for an almost ghostly look in face and hands.

When it comes to texture, I dislike super - smooth resin. I enjoy resin that is silky, with a barely discernable tooth to it, but not frictionless.

    16. If it's bright enough to reflect off the doll and off my glasses, I'd certainly shy away from it. For practical reasons and for aesthetic choice.

I hadn't thought about sealing it it with a matte sealant before though, it's something I'll keep in mind next time I see a sculpt I like but the shine turns me off.

    17. The only type of resin I dislike is shiny. It wouldn't however put me off getting a doll if I liked it enough. I can fix shine with matte sealant or sanding. In all I prefer heavy smooth resin but I can live with tooth too as long as the resin is heavy and thick.

    18. Resin type and texture is definitely a big part of a doll's personality. BJDs are both visual and tactile, and sometimes my love for a doll is all about how it feels when I hold it -- not just the smoothness of the resin but the weight of it and the way the arms swivel in their sockets. I am desperately in love with Fairyland dolls right now, but sometimes I don't like how thin the resin is -- it makes them feel so hollow. But the lightness of the resin is a big part of their awesome poseability, so it's all a trade-off.

My first and still favorite doll is my Batchix Lagoon, who is made of a very shiny resin. I don't really like high-shine resin but it doesn't bother me with her because it somehow fits in with her overall look (also she's a water sprite, so that wet look fits in with her story line!).

    19. Definitely. I do not like shiney resin for my dolls.

    20. Definitely, I dislike shiny, translucent or thin resin... it makes them feel so unrealistic, and realism is a big deal for me when it comes to dolls.
