Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Is using mohair fur okay?

Nov 6, 2009

    1. I am from NZ.
If we see a possum on the road we swerve to HIT them not to miss. Wouldnt be doing our civic duty otherwise.
There used to be a bounty on them but they dropped that as it wasnt enough to recover the cost of bullets.
      http://www.possumnz.com/Possum_Fact_File_524.aspx
I have no issues from using any fur from possums and rabbits

    2. How do you feel about using a mohair wig on your doll?
I feel okay about using a mohair wig. Usually, they are just sheered-off fur made into a wig. There are some that aren't though...
Does it go against what you believe?
Using a mohair wig that's made of sheered wool doesn't go against what I believe. It's the same like a sweater made of wool in my
opinion. But there are wigs that are made of leather, so the animals had to be killed in order to have the skin with fur attatched.
And this in fact does bother me. I think it's wrong to wear fur coats and such, because usually the animals are either killed very
inhuman or they are still alive when skinned. So the same goes for the wigs which are made of leather. I wouldn't buy them.

    3. I just had some rabbit pelts shipped to me so that I can make some clothing for my Mu/Dan doll. I have no issue with using humanely obtained fur for my dolls... but if the animal which the fur is from was killed solely for fur, then I can't condone using it, personally.

I was unaware that mohair used real fur. Are there any similar wig materials that use false fur?

    4. Aside from the raging debate about animal rights and the like... here's a great link that explains how the hair is harvested. Obviously it all depends on where you buy your wigs from and asking the seller about their process or their sources would be a good idea if you are concerned.

I really can't say what's 'okay' for someone else on any topic. It's your comfort level concerning the product. Good luck!

    5. Oh, wonderful! Something sheared from sheep is totally fine with me.

    6. Clover's wig seems to be made from a hide and said fur cause it sure feels like hide on the bottom
heck Sarah's wig is made from human hair! That makes people uneasy about her (her old eyes made people really uneasy) she since has gotten new eyes which make her more approachable lol

    7. Actually, seal is eaten in Canada. Check out seal flipper pie on the internet. Canned seal meat is also traditional in Newfoundland. Many cod fishermen would consider seals to be pests.

In the community I live in in northern Alberta, muskrat is considered a delicacy by the local Aboriginal people, who used to make a living off trapping for muskrat, but can't anymore because the fur prices are so low that they can't make a living from it when you take into account the fuel, equipment and time needed to trap. They also eat beaver and lynx when they can, especially the older generation. Mink is not eaten - they have a musky oil which probably makes them taste gross.

If I lived somewhere that I could get free range meats, I would consider it worth spending the extra money on it because of the knowledge that the animal had a better quality of life. Sometimes people give me wild game meat which is great because I know that animal had the best quality of life possible until it was shot.

Back on topic, I have dolls with both Tibetan lambswool and mohair wigs and I am fine with it. My species evolved to be omnivores and so that's what I am; my dolls can also use animal products since I do.

    8. I think this is a debate that is up to each individual.

    9. You could say that about every single topic on this forum. It's just about sharing information, opinions, thoughts and feelings in a respectful manner- that's what makes DoA fun.

    10. I believe that you should use the WHOLE animal. So only pelts from animals that are eaten. I accept that I am an omnivore so the by products of my eating should be acceptable to use too. But much of the mohair I have is actually just sheered... which if I'm not mistaken is a necessity for domesticated fur growers. They are bred that way.

And not every farm is a factory farm. In fact most of the cows, sheep, horses, goats I see are grazing in wide open fields. And I'm a Californian so there's a lot of wide open fields, especially in the central valley.

    11. Firstly, I'm vegan. No meat, poultry, fish, dairy, eggs, etc. That also means no leather/fur.
I have some mixed feelings about wool and mohair though...
I"m totally against tibetan lambskin as it takes the skin from the animal to get the wool. That equals dead animal.
But I"m a bit confused about wefted mohair. I've had a wefted mohair wig before and I loved it, but I wasn't really sure about whether or not the animal it came from -died- ... so I sold it in the end. So definitely no skin scalp wigs, but wefted maybe ok?

    12. That's because you can't see the ones in the factory farm sheds. ^^:
I promise that's where most meat/leather/fur is coming from. Promise.

    13. Sorry if this does not belong here..Oke the fact is: I bought a pair of Volks MSD boots but I did not realise there's real rabbit fur in it..I'm really dissapointed by Volks because I love them. The boots are gorgeous and I'll let my girl wear them but normally I do NOT wear things with real animal fur on it, so I feel sad now. Are there more people here with the same feelings? Maybe I want to make a petition to send to Volks and ask them not to use real fur on their clothing. :...(:...(

    14. As long as the animal has been killed humanely BEFORE being skinned and isn't on the endangered species list, I have no problem with real fur on clothes. Human or doll.

if you feel that strongly though, you should get clarification before you buy the item so that you don't end up with more fur clothes.

    15. There is a debate thread about mohair use on the board, since some mohair wigs are on the skin. In that thread, there is also discussion of rabbit fur and some other fur types. It is worth looking at. Some of the animals mentioned are exterminated as pests, and rabbits were on that list in some countries; if a company is getting their fur from those sources, I don't mind the use of fur at all.

I don't mind it in general provided it isn't, as houdini-ziggy mentions, that the animal isn't an endangered species.

    16. Most likely Volks bought scrap fur from a different company to add the embellishment onto the boots, I'm sure they aren't killing rabbits themselves. I honestly don't mind this kind of thing, its a nice thought that the whole animal is being put to use in some way. I see coney at the super market all the time, my husband is always threatening to buy a couple but they are a bit pricey.

    17. I totally understand your view on fur, but I think overall, it's a personal choice whether or not to buy clothes with fur. I think that people should still have the option to design/buy/put their dolls in outfits that have fur. I agree with the caveat mentioned by both posts before me. The fur should be regulated. But I wouldn't ask companies to stop using animal products in their designs altogether. I think we should all just personally choose what we and our dolls will or won't wear. But that said, one idea would be to maybe suggest it be included in item descriptions whether or not the items were real fur...leather...whatever. And also in some cases, maybe an option of synthetic fur trims...etc.

    18. Aw Adriana i really feel for you, and please do not be upset over something that was just an honest mistake

i'm pretty sure fairyland are now stating what their outfits are made from trim wise, because this was questioned with them a little while ago....In this day and age there are so many alternatives to real fur i think it's a matter of cost and sheer laziness that companies don't use faux fur....i would never use fur for anything on my dolls...Wigs that are made of pelt with the skin attached i would not want next to my dolls head...the idea is quite apporant to me....
it really depends what you feel about fur...it's not the arguement about whether it's an endangered species, of course no one would want anything from something that is threatened, that to me is morally wrong, BUT more you have to think about what that animal went through when it was kept, what abuse it suffered what conditions it was kept in and what quality of life it had before it was used to trim dolls clothes....after all if you are buying stuff like this you are lining the pockets of fur traders to keep doing this, and do not forget rabbit fur looks a lot like cat fur, so it's quite a grey area
i for one find the thought of fur absolutley unacceptable, but it's a personal choice

    19. I personally don't see this as an issue unless the animal in question is endangered. It's a person to person opinion, if there is something with fur on it and you disapprove it is your right not to purchase it. If you're unsure, from what I've seen it's almost safer to just assume anything with fur on it (that isn't a non mohair fur wig) is real fur unless otherwise stated. I know occasionally downy feathers are used instead. Also like with slaughtered cows, whose pelts are often used to make leather products, the fur on the clothes we buy is likely occasionally the left over waste product of animals killed for meat, I personally would feel pretty awful knowing that an animal was killed and it's beautiful pelt was simply tossed in the trash to rot.

    20. for me it depends on how the fur was obtained... I am a huge animal lover and prefer them alive so I do not support those who just kill animals for the fur. But if the animals for whatever reason died naturally or humanely to me its ok as long as it wasn't for just the fur. I do not like fur myself but on a doll I wouldn't mind if it was real or fake. Sorry if I do not make sense or if someone doesn't agree with me ^^;
