Is your doll stinky???

Jan 17, 2007

    1. When i first got my girl, the closest smell i could compare her to is new pokemon cards (I collected a lot of them when i was a kid).

They don't have an overpowering smell, i'm very sensitive to chemical esque smells and i didn't notice it very much unless she was very close to me.

My dolls do occasionally get "perfumed" particularly in lotus, jasmine, or rasberry. ^^

    2. My girl doesn't smell like resin, but...she smells sweet :)
I don't know why though, I don't use anything on her clothes. Maybe it's from ironing her cotton shirts?

    3. all of my boys didn't have any weird smells when they arrive my home, try not to get their clothes dirty while i taking them out for the pictures...Besides that, when their clothes are dirty i will wash them in washing machine and dried it under the sun, this will make their clother smells really nice like sun

    4. well i was in for a surprise with my first SD, both of mine were bought second hand form the same person i had bought a yo-sd from her but it had no box, when i ought my SD i learned that she's one of the people who like to keep her dolls naked in boxes when their not being used, she told me that the bjd resin is actually porous so it absorbs scent REALLY well, (that's one of the reasons you shouldn't smoke around a bjd it absorbs the scent really well) so i got my boy and when i opened his box it REEKED of vanilla she had kept unlit vanilla candles in their boxes and it was awesome even to this day if you get close enough you can still smell the vanilla goodness! so if you like to store your dolls in boxes hide candles in there!

    5. Mmmm new doll smell. XD The inside of Noire's head still smells like resin, it's amazing. :aheartbea Amser didn't smell much like resin when I got him though, he didn't smell like much of anything. But now he smells like his wig.

    6. I was on the verge of buying my Pipos guy a new pair a jeans the other day, almost identical to ones he has. Why? I was thinking "but he wears them all the time. They're going to start to stink". It seems I am anthropomorphising a bit much, perhaps.

He was very whiffy when he first arrived, but yes, new doll smell is an awesome smell. It wore off very quickly, but I lost an S-hook down an arm and had to dig it out last week. It released a cloud of new doll smell nostalgia. And probably multiple carcinogens. Yay! :D

    7. Some of them smell a bit of resin, but it's become very mild. I haven't tried any perfume on their clothes for fear that it might damage the resin.

Does anyone know if perfume on doll clothes is damaging?

    8. This is interesting mind you Hazuki dose small alittle like vinyl (she a week old) but not bad at all. I just washed her body suit and tights last night then last them dry.

    9. I don't think I've commented on this thread before (If I have, dementia setting in, not to worry) but apart from that faint plastic smell when you first open the box of a brand new doll, I can safely say non of my dolls smell.

I have, however, bought a doll and at other times, some clothing from Ebay and had horrendous problems with the smell. The doll had obviously been sold to me by a heavy smoker (who had advertised as from a non-smoking household... you noticed how NO-ONE smokes on Ebay?) who I guess had hurriedly doused the doll and it's clothes and box cushions in cheap perfume and then sprayed with Fabreeze for good measure...

I've been told before now that I have a freakish sense of smell, and unhappily strong smells trigger my migraines... so YES, I could smell strong stale cigarette odour, stale perfume and Fabreeze and had to sell the doll on ASAP, because despite repeated washing the smell wouldn't come out. So basically I was stuck with a BJD that made me physically sick! I actually told people in my sales thread that it smelt bad and yet still got a buyer - those were the days - this was a few years back when it was easy to sell just about any BJD for a good price.

I have also received clothing second hand from Smellbay which has was rank with stale perfume odour and once bought a Tonner doll which reeked of dogs!!! I guess people just don't notice the smell on the dolls when they pack them up because they smoke, wear a lot of perfume and have 6 dogs running around in the doll room?

Thankfully these were rare instances, under normal circumstances dolls don't smell do they? But then, in my experience neither do smokers necessarily or dog owners... I guess if we wear perfume and it doesn't smell we would want our money back!

    10. I was wondering are their people who have their doll wear the same outfit like forever and ever and ever?
Omg lol I DO do this. He's been wearing the same pants for months now. I'm ashamed to admit it but at least I change his shirts once in awhile. But his clothes doesn't smell.
And are there people who wash their doll clothes on regular base?
I sometimes wash them. I wash his fur wig often just in case of stains (I'm waiting for a wig cap to come in the mail right now.)
And are their people who spray a bit of parfum on their dolls or dollclothes?
O.o I don't think its safe to spray perfume but no I don't do that. I just toss his clothes in his own little laundry bag.
He doesn't smell maybe of sealer but nothing too funky. :)

    11. I love the smell of a new dolly, but it does wear off very quickly.
however the boxes keep that new doll smell, so I can just open them up when ever I feel like it.

      lol

On topic- my dolls have been wearing the same clothes for 4+ years and I never had them smell. Dolls don't sweat and stink like people, so their clothes only need washing if they actually get dirt on them. <3

    12. Some of them have the "new resin" smell, but it doesn't stay long. I only wash the clothes if they get dirty or absorb a smell (like when they were in a smoker's house, right next to the ashtray, unknown to me until after the fact....)

Some of my boys DO wear cologne! amir wears Bod sexy x 2, Loki wears Lucky You and Blake wears....I forget what it is but it's by David Beckham. but the cologne goes on the clothes or wig, not on the resin

    13. My doll doesn't smell like much of anything xD

    14. So far, all the dolls I own, I've bought new from their respective companies, so I can't comment on any notable strange smells I've experienced with secondhand dolls. For some reason, though, I've found that the Dollshe Honey Skin resin has a much stronger resin smell than any of my other dolls by far. My Be with You Wood smelled slightly of resin when I first got him, but the smell has since faded to the point where i no longer notice it. My Soom Idealian also had a bit of a stronger resin scent (probably because he's so huge), but not overwhelming, and the smell has also faded with time. My Dollzone girl had no resin smell whatsoever that I could detect (she was also sanded very smooth with no seams at all), and my Spritdoll heads may have had a very slight resin scent, but nothing too noticeable. My IOS 80cm body did have a fairly strong resin scent, much like my Dollshe Venitu, and I really think it's because the foam "form" that they are shipped with holds the resin scent much more persistently than pillows, fabric, or bubble wrap. The foam may actually be adding a bit of a chemical-y smell as well, now that I think about it. Personally, I do not like nor do I dislike the smell of new resin, but sometimes my Dollshe Venitu's resin smell gets a bit overwhelming and makes me feel dizzy*_*. I've freed him from foam-jail to air out with the fan on multiple occasions, but the resin smell remains and is still relatively strong, probably because I keep putting him back in with the foam like a derp. I figure my dolls probably have held their resin-scent longer than others' dolls because i'm one of those weirdos who keeps them in their boxes with either no clothes and no wigs, or minimal light-colored clothing to prevent staining and/or yellowing. I also keep all their purchased clothes in their original packages they came with, and I store them in a separate box along with other doll stuff, although clothes I have made get thrown in there too on occasion. I've put a little lavender sachet in with the clothes to keep them smelling nice :daisy. For the most part, i'm not a terribly organized person :sweat but I try to keep my habit of being scatterbrained to a minimum with my dolls, and keeping them in their boxes makes life easier for me. Shoot, I'll actually probably throw some little lavender sachets in the doll boxes along with them as well, now that this thread has brought it to mind. To mitigate the (really strong) resin smell that persists with my dolls who live in foam-jail, I may actually be inclined to find different boxes for them and make some comfy cushions to put in, instead of leaving them in their foam forms. Ahhh, yet another project to undertake. I'll definitely keep their original boxes in the event that I end up selling them for some reason, and I have all the COAs and information for each doll in a file drawer with my other ''important'' papers. I'm... pretty sure those smell just like paper... :XD:

    15. Regarding the dolls wearing the same outfit forever. That's pretty much all of my dolls :XD: My DollZone Yuu 2 who is 6 years old has been in the same outfit the entire time, same with my 5 year old DollFamily XiangYi. They both need new clothes as they're starting to show their age now.

But none of my dolls have particularly strange smells. The only two dolls I've received that had a really strong resin smell when I first opened them were my Fairyland PukiFee Zio and my DollChateau Larry. The smell was quite overpowering until it dispersed in the air. It's quite funny my tiniest dolls both had the strongest smell.

I don't particularly like the smell but it brings back happy memories of all the times I got new dolls :kitty2 Oddly enough I do like the smell of new plastic, particularly things like inflatable pool toys

    16. I keep little tulle bags of cedar balls in the drawers where I store the crew's clothes, just as a precaution against miller moths and carpet beetles. (They're the most common household pests in this part of the country, so even though I haven't seen any in my house *yet* I'm still paranoid about it. o_0 )

That has the side-effect of making everything my dolls wear smell vaguely of cedar. I don't mind it, myself. I like the smell of cedar. I'm sure someone out there would complain about it if I was in the habit of selling outfits, though. Luckily I'm not, so... No worries. XD

    17. I was wondering are their people who have their doll wear the same outfit like forever and ever and ever?
Yes, guilty. I don't change them out of their clothes hardly ever save for a few that don't have fullset outfits.
And are there people who wash their doll clothes on regular base?
No, I don't feel there is a need to. I always wash my hands before touching them.
And are their people who spray a bit of parfum on their dolls or dollclothes?
I don't add fragrances to them or anything. Most of my dolls still smell like resin, and I've grown fond of that smell :)

    18. my first doll didn't smell like anything, but my second had a slight resin smell. I really only smell it when I move his joints vigorously (presumably the friction is sending some resin particles to my nose) or if I literally stick my nose against him. smell isn't usually a big issue. as for clothes, my boy only has one outfit right now, so yeah, if he were human, he might have some issues xD but dolls don't sweat or accumulate the kind of bacteria that we do, so it's not a problem, hahaha

    19. After reading this thread I have since popped the head caps on all of my dolls and took a whif. LOL Yes I totally get what you mean. I thin Xander's smelt the best. (Ring doll Valo with mechanical arm)

    20. I've only noticed the new resin smell during new doll box openings. I do wash outfits from time to time, especially the ones that I handle a lot. Then they just small fresh and clean.

I haven't had problems with BJD clothes, but there's one seller on eBay who sells (technically OT, but will fit my PKFs) dresses that are pretty and well-made, but utterly REEK of stale cigarette smoke. I have to immediately discard all the packaging into a tied-shut bag and thoroughly handwash anything I get from her. Fortunately, that always takes care of it.
