Leaving your dolls in the box over a period of time

Oct 1, 2009

    1. I always keep my dolls out and in there little doll rooms on my floor. If there laying down sleeping it would be in there bed ^^

    2. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem/ situation.

I have to keep my dolls in there boxes because of my newest cat. She would steal the wigs and lick them and ruin them. (good thing she only ruined one) Because of this I dont play with my dolls as much as I would like to. Plus I can't even have them out to "enjoy the company" of them. Or Teegan will come and knock them down to take the wig DX

does anyone else have to keep their dolls in a box because of issues?

I also have to keep yarn and anything away from her. DX This cat.

    3. Yep, I have to keep my dolls put away unless I am right there with them. I had one cat bite a nose of one doll (he just doesn't like that doll for some reason, he's fine with the rest) and the female just loves wigs or wants to lick their faces (sort of cute, but not good for either of them).
And yes, I can't leave out string, elastic or yarn either!

I do put the two favorite dolls I have in a bureau drawer in the bedroom, so it's easy to pull them out for pictures--I take off any dark clothes or dark wigs they have on as well and just put them in a baggie next to them for the next time I want to fool with them. The cats make me be neater than I would be, but they are worth it. :D

    4. That is very amusing! Saddening, but amusing. We have two cats, and aside from some sniffing, they don't bother our dolls at all. Actually, I've got a very cute picture of my kitten sleeping with its head on one of my dolls.

My only worry is that the younger cat, who likes to jump on things, might knock one of my girls off from the corner of my dresser where I keep her. I can guarantee she'd break an ear if she fell, since she's an elf. But we keep all our dolls out and around.

    5. No cats but a big dog. Keep her out of my room though. She would eat my Puki in one bite if she got a hold of him.

But other than that, nope keep them out of the box.

    6. I have four dogs so I keep my dolls safely stored in a former bookcase that has glass doors. It's perfect. The dogs cannot disturb my dolls and I can also see them. :)

    7. I keep the ones I'm not actively working with in boxes because I know my housekeeping (and dusting) capabilities.

Are your wigs natural mohair or tibetan wool? I heard that they're very attractive to cats.

Maybe you could put a doll up high like on a bookcase, where the cat can't jump?

    8. I wonder if there's something you might be able to do to the wigs to make them less appealing. I hadn't considering the idea that it could be the mohair or something attracting them. Some kind of deterrent that wouldn't be harmful to the doll might work, but I'm not sure what there is. Otherwise, would it be a possibility to keep the dolls in your room and lock the cat out? Otherwise high shelves and glass-front cabinets might be the best options.

    9. I keep dolls I'm in the process of hybridising in boxes, just because it gets weird to have floating heads or headless bodies lying around. But I like to keep my finished dolls out of their boxes if possible. I use their boxes to store their clothes and small accessories.

My cats don't discriminate when it comes to fur or fiber, natural or synthetic - they see something small and fluffy, they want to attack it. Spencer, the older of my two cats, has been known to wander up to me when I'm dressing a doll, snatch the wig off the doll's head and run away. I've always been able to retrieve them, though, and no harm has been done. I actually let him have a cheap random default fur wig one of my dolls came with and it's one of his favourite toys.

When it comes to keeping things away from cats, my recommendations would be 1. Tall bookshelves with no other furniture very close by, or 2: closets. My kitties are very energetic tabbies that can jump quite high, but if a shelf is full they won't try to jump onto it, because they know they won't be able to get a foothold easily. I recently moved from an older apartment with a closet door that wouldn't close (there was a crack in the wall and the building had settled so much, the door was too big for the opening!) so the kitties loved playing in there. Now I have a closet with a door that closes and it has built in shelves, so it's perfect. I keep them out of it as much as possible, and they don't meow at the door like they would if I put them out of my room while I stayed inside it.

Oh, and something I used when I had less space was just a single small shelf, mounted on the wall with support brackets, that was so high they couldn't reach.

    10. I refuse to keep my dolls in boxes. The only time they ever go back in the boxer after the initial opening is if they are being shipped out.

I don't currently have pets, but I had a Jack Russell Terrier. I could leave dolls laying in the floor constantly (BJD and OT) and she never bothered any of them in 13 years. I don't deal well with hyper pets or pets that destroy things. The pet would have to be trained not to chew or jump if it lived with me.

    11. My cat likes to chew on everything, including light bulbs @_@. So, to make sure no accidents happen, I keep my dolls in boxes, at least until my cabinet has arrived.

    12. I keep all of my dolls in boxes. It keeps them safe in my cramped flat and stops them from getting covered in dust and other debris that is always flying around.

I wish I didn't have to but I'd rather they be safe than ruined!

    13. when I first had a doll, they were outside the box all the time..but now, I always put them (undressed) in the box 'cause of lack of space in my room..don't have enough space for them to display..and boxes protects them from dust..:)

    14. I used to keep my doll in a box until I got a place of my own, it wasn't because of pets, though. My parents house was a smoking home and I couldn't stand the smell so I'd keep my only doll in a box vacuum packed away from everything to limit the effects. It also limited what I wanted to buy because I was worried about resale.

Now that I live in a smoke free environment I LOVE to have my dollies sit out on my shelves. so I can dress them and pose them and everything.

    15. Mine are all in boxes when not being photographed/measured-for-clothes as I live in earthquake country and am paranoid despite the fact that the floors are heavily carpeted. :)

    16. I bought mine, admired them and then put them straight back in their box. They're naked and whenever I think I should buy them clothes, I buy something else instead so they're likely to stay there a long while til I get interested in them again.

    17. kitten. : I usually do the same. I always say I'll buy them clothes and finally buy another doll (thinking maybe I won't have a second chance to get her)... I'll learn sewing xp

    18. I have a small box that I use to keep a girl in when she travels with me, but usually I keep them out on display. They're so cute that I love looking at them whenever I pass by.

    19. I will never keep my dolls in their boxes or any other box at all. I did it once and it caused me to fall out of the hobby for a few months since my eye and mind had nothing to focus on and therefore drifted away to other things. My room is quite small and all boxes are stacked in a way where it is a pain to get them out, open them, play with them for a little bit and then stack them all away again. The work itself was enough to not make me want to deal with it for a few moments of fun.
Now, they are all displayed in my room and dusted and cleaned every once in a while. It's much more work when cleaning, but it's so much more worth it to be able to be enamored by their beauty on a daily basis.

    20. I personally don't feel guilty for keeping my dolls in their boxes. But then, I don't imagine them feeling bad about it either - maybe because, for me, the characters of my dolls are the 'real' part of them, whereas the dolls are just tools I use to envision them. So, for me, the characters of my dolls always have unlimited freedom to act however they want, even if I keep them in their boxes day in day out for months (which I sometimes do, as I strictly disallow myself from doing anything dolly while I have university obligations).

I don't think there's anything silly about feeling bad about keeping dolls in boxes, though. This hobby is very expensive, and if the main pleasure you get from your dolls is interacting with them and having them on display, then I can completely understand that keeping them boxed up would feel 'wasteful' in some sense.
