Making Boy Dolls....Boys! [~Small Edit~]

Jul 10, 2008

    1. I sorry, off topic, but I must say that this site has made me think guy first then look closely.

    2. Way back in the day, gender guessing was used to tell anime fans from non-anime fans. Typically, masculinity is equated with testosterone; muscle definition, more hair, define facial features. As much as I hate to say it, race also plays a significant factor. Certain genetic patterns will lend themselves to either direction regardless of the individual's sex.

I will say this, though, EID owners never have this problem.

    3. I've never had that problem with my Minifee, and they're slim MSD. It's not that he's the muscular body (though he is), since he's pretty much usually dressed... I think a large portion of it is the wig he wears, the faceup he has, the clothes I dress him in... He's smirky, he's smexy, he's..undeniably male.

I've never had anyone think him otherwise, but I'm sure I could manage it with a longer wig and some "girlier" clothing?

None of my male pukis have this problem, either... though I had a VERY bust Iplehouse girl who was frequently mistaken for male, because she had shorter hair.

...but my youngest brother has this problem ALL THE TIME. He's got really long hair, and since he's only 10, he doesn't have a great deal of physical markers (pre-puberty, gotta love it)...and while it drives him crazy, he refuses to admit that it's mostly his hair that's at fault.

So maybe it's mostly the wig?

    4. This happens to me often, unfortunately. My boy doesn't wear pink often, he never wears skirts, dresses or anything frilly. Jeans, often ripped, and tank tops are his thing mostly. But he's always called a girl, if nothing else at least people think he's pretty?

I think for my boy part of it is his face. He's got a gothic face up with black eye make up on, though it isn't entirely apparent without being close to him. I don't get annoyed unless people insist he's a female after I've corrected them. Sometimes I don't even bother correcting people.

This passed Xmas me and my friend brought our dolls along, she has a girl, I have a boy. When we stopped by a family friends house she also had company over. A lady who seemed really interested in dolls, porcelain, baby dolls etc, just looooved my boy and she'd never seen a BJD before. She kept referring to my doll as a she. I didn't correct her though, instead I smiled and thanked her for her kind words.

I've been on the opposite side of that once, and the reason I said nothing was because when I made that gender-mistake I was so horribly embarrassed and I was so afraid I'd offended the owner. So sometimes, I let it slide.

    5. I think a lot of it depends on how you dress a doll. I have an El, Mikos, who is pretty standard for his kind- long hair, pretty face-up, slightly gothy clothing... and he gets mistaken for a girl a fair amount. However, if I dress him in a hoody and jeans with trainers, it happens less than if he is in tight trousers and flashy goth boots. ;) So even for the most girly of male dolls, it's all in the presentation!

My other male dolls don't have the problem so much: I have an Ark, a masculine Minimee with a beard (dead give-away, that!) and a Dollmore man. All of them have less androgonous features than a lot of male BJDs, and it really does show when other people take a guess at their gender. ;)

    6. I haven't had this gender misidentification situation with my Dollfies, though they all have long hair wigs. All my dollfies represent doll versions of heart-throbs of mine. When I was in the hospital for 7 weeks after being t-boned by a drunk driver, my oldest daughter brought my Dollzone Ying, my(Lou) to keep me company, and I told my favorite physical therapist who Lou is a dollfie version of, and he was so proud I had told him , that he would boast to his partner that I told him who Lou is a doll of, so to speak, but a couple of the techs in icu got a real kick out of Lou's anatomy, they were very impressed, two middle aged women like me, giggling, and oh my goshing

    7. One time I was walking around with my boy (70cm DZ boy). He was topless, therefore you could obviously tell he's a boy. People still kept calling him a girl.... I mean even Barbies have breasts.....>.<

So even topless boys can be mistaken for girls...

    8. It totally happened to me~

My colleagues refuse to believe that my boys are boys.

So I grabbed their hands to touch the 1/3s abs and chest. Lack of boobs plus 6 pecs. -rofl-

      Convinced them rather instantly.

My 1/4 though...it was hard. They said 'she's' too young to have boobs. So i took a finger each and made them prod his precious bit.

      Convinced them immediately.

Then they wanted to see all the boys' bits.

Me: Perverts you lot. I should take photos of you guys perv-ing on my boys' bits and post on facebook. Or take a video and post on youtube.
Them: Right-o...we'll not see your boys ahem...

    9. I have some very girly boy and some fairly boyish boys... and all and sundry get mistaken for girls by someone at some point, which I find hilarious  My most boyish boys tend towards short hair and standard 'boy clothes' - t-shirts, trousers, trainers etc, which does tend to help cut down on the misidentification but doesn't get rid of it altogether... which means I can have a good snicker at their misfortune whenever it happens~ XD

    10. I've had this experience about Shinta being indicated as feminine, even by other doll owners. I think it's the hair mostly. His character has long hair so he has a girl's wig. And his head is rather gender neutral. Perhaps only with a boy body you'd know he's a very handsome young man ;)

But now that I had them exchange clothes by lack of carnival costumes (yep, it is that time of year right now and I'm in Lampegat (Lightbulbtown) right now). I also swapped their wigs and he's wearing his girlfriend's kimono and her right now and he looks great in them. I could change their heads too if I feel like it because the BBB Charisma head also fits on BBB boy body and vice versa. A while ago I even read on their board someone was interested in having a girl body with the Apollo head.
Anyway I am digressing. A lot of people apparently still unconciously believe all dolls are girls. Except when it's Ken, who doesn't even have male parts :P

    11. My boys are always considered boys. But I must say that 70cm males look a lot more masculine than MSD boys for example, in my opinion.

Generally, I don't put any eyelashes on any of my boys, while my girls get BIG eyelashes. And they also have lower eyelashes while my boys haven't.

Ivan (luts delf lu-wen) and Sergei (souldoll chiron human) are both wearing pants and tight shirts. And with tight fitting clothes on boys, you can clearly see that they don't have any boobs.

For Yasha, my soom heliot, he is wearing his default heliot outfit. It is a sort of dressy thing, but it is also showing his chest through and that is a very manly chest.

    12. Shinta often wears a hakama. Unknowing people would think it's a skirt.

    13. Aiden has be recognized as a boy :D
i was REALLY suprised cuz hes got a VERY feminin face and his hair are in between of being long or short.
but it was an anime lover so shes probably used to feminin boys :-)

    14. Ha...My obitsu 27cm has a blue wig, I cross dress him all the time, but no matter what he wears most people say 'girl' I got him a black wig, egypian-style faceup makeup and masculine clothes....'what a pretty girl' T_T if he's topless people will notice he lacks boobs...otherwise no dice.

    15. I wonder if the Iplehouse EID's have this problem.

Well, the only boy I have (for now) is an MSD and he has already been mistaken for a girl. I'll read this thread and apply what people say. Then I'll let you know if I have any success.

    16. Ok, ok, soo... A friend of my mother's came over recently and some of my dolls are sitting about, so the questions of "what are they?" "where did you get them?" naturally start spilling forth. When I referred to my Volks Yugiri as a he, she was a little thrown, I explained that it was a common mistake, and fair enough really where Yugiri's are concerned. But when I pointed to my Dia boy, who has long flowing tresses :sweat she says, "Oh yeah, I knew he was a man 'cause he has big feet."
So there you go, big feet save the day apparently.

    17. I have a DZ Hid and he was mistaken all the time till I got the shorter wig for him....black spikey and makes him as a whole look more like a guy.

My MNF Ruth though still gets mistaken for a girl even though he doesn't dress expecially girly, usually just jeans and t-shirts or hoodies.

My MNF has longish blonde hair though so I guess that would be it. Also I find when you have a 'set' people just kind of assume that one MUST be the girl, so they go for the more girly looking of the bunch. ^_^

    18. I try to make mischief pretty manly. He's got a short wig, and wears pants, and shirts with 'guy' prints on them, and some giant awesome boots, but he still gets called a girl all the time. I personally think he looks like a boy, but I've also been guilty of the 'she's so pretty'. Mine was just with a human child, not a resin one! ^^u

    19. I seem to have succeeded in doing the opposite, it seems that everyone who sees my Lydia (Volks F-35) thinks she's a boy. O_o yes, she has short hair... but she wears A SKIRT WRAP and STOCKINGS WITH GARTERS!! *khm* yea, still does not make a difference, as I still keep getting "oh, is that your doll? He's cute, what's his name?" lines. ^^ So as far as I'm concerned the perception of doll's gender by other people is... random. lol. ^^

    20. I think it depends on what particular thing people look at. Like Shinta. A while ago I took him to a Star Trek convention, have my picture taken with the actor who played Checkov in the original series and even though my little boy is wearing a male TOS uniform and obviously has no boobs, Walter mistakes him for a girl ;). It's the hair, i know ;)
