Making Boy Dolls....Boys! [~Small Edit~]

Jul 10, 2008

    1. Even with a constantly undone shirt, not all girl dolls are known to exactly carry a rack either. Not if they're supposed to be little girls. Don't even bother correcting people who call your 'he' a 'she' until they've actually tried putting him in a dress and accidentally seen 'evidence' that he's otherwise. It's hard to explain. If they don't look like a stereotypical Western man or boy, don't make them. I know a few people who insist that in other countries it's impossible to tell the difference between boys and girls on sight, because the women are so indecently tomboyish and all the guys are sweet and feminine. It's total crap. If they can't tell, surprise them. If it's just a casual viewer and they aren't interested in the doll's character or personality... let them keep their sad illusions.
The AOD boy body has... prominent nipples. I find it spooky in *all* BJD. Gah. He won't be shirtless much, then... unless I learn to sand.

    2. I dunno, I never tire of the threat to pull down the pants

    3. If I had a nickle for every time I've said "Don't make me prove it-"...

    4. I'm lazy, I didn't read the whole thread so forgive any redundancies. I have to say that even being a doll person, I have trouble telling some of the boys from the girls.

My boys are boys so they tend to wear shorter hair (but not always ;) as they don't have a set 'look' so I switch things out). I don't often take them out (mostly just to doll meets) so I haven't really encountered the 'she's so cute/pretty/gorgeous/whatever'.. I'd say that shorter is a good place to start. Wearing BOY clothes (as in not a dress or frills or anything girly) is another good way. Hell, my girl dresses like a boy so she's got the opposite problem. XDDD

One way to really get them to say, "oh hey, a boy!" would be to go shirtless or with an open shirt. Then again, some people are just in denial; a doll simply must be a girl..

    5. I gave up trying to convince people ^^ I took my El-ss out the other day and when I sat him down I had lovely old ladies comment 'Oh isn't she pretty, is she comfortable sitting there' my friend tried to convince them that 'she' is a he without pulling his pants down... i gave up and started saying 'she' XD I do consider him to look like a overgrown barbie though. El... half half, depending what I dress him in, usually very 'girly-boy' is the comment I get for him.

On the other hand my Shine has never been mistaken for a girl. He was in a military outfit once and suits at other times, but he's never got the 'girl' comment from people. Neither has my breakaway. *shrugs* I guess it depends on mold and the way they dressed though. hair style also has a lot to do with it, longish/ fibre hair gives more 'girly' feel. Unless they are aware of the 'look' of anime-ish/ VK/ J-rock style boys, then I am happy to let them think boys are girls :)

(I have a rule though, all is male till proven is female... watching my friend draw her fem-boys... with child bearing hips... it does seem to work)

    6. I didn't expect to succeed in people understanding that Prince Hachiko
was a boy, with the neon eye-shadow and pink lip gloss. Though Saiko
has a lot of colorful makeup as well, I plan on making him more masculine,
and gender wise... will probably be mistaken for some heavenly creature ._.

    7. I can usually understand when my boys are mistaken for girls, I feel that its due to the fact that most dolls, are female. I mean, when most people think doll, they dont think of guys. The only time that its really bothered me is when I had my Elfdoll K Thomas with me, he was in a short fur wig, black pants, boots, a button up over shirt and a lady said: "wow, where did you get her?" I swear I could have smacked her. The only time Ive been more bugged by a comment is when somebody asked me if Caspian (doc wi) was a bratz doll.

    8. It's only happened once or twice with msd sized dolls I've had. Toren, my Saint doesn't have the problem.

    9. Everyone who's met Nao has been someone I know, who knew I was getting a boy doll, so they don't need to guess, although when I first showed him to my mum, with his long blonde wig on, she kept saying "that's a girl" and wouldn't think otherwise until I changed it to the default wig. I should take him out sometime and see what people think.

    10. SeNii has gotten the whole "she's so beautiful!" However...he has been seen as a guy to some people ^^ He was mistaken for a girl more so after I first got him (I blame the home-made clothing I had for him >> ), but now he's seen more as a man XD
Generally more artsy people, or people who are big into Japanese/Korean/etc fashion/culture seem to recognize SeNii as a male rather than female

However...every once in awihle when we're out in public, someone will come up to me, "ZOMG what a cute girlie!!!!! O_O **twitch**" >>;; Oh the randomness of people can be amazing sometimes. One time my friends and I (at a con) had our dollies, and we were talking about this very subject, when two girls ran up to us and asked if they could take a better look at our girls. XD Can't escape it sometimes...**sigh**

Personally, I think SeNii is looking more manly these days **minus the baby blankie**

    11. I just leave it up to people to determine my boys' gender because it gets more complicated trying to explain that their femininity doesn't make them girls *facepalms*. Even though I do put Ying in pants now sometimes!! Maybe they need to have furwigs or something =A=.

    12. Never. Ever. Nope. Shasta's always been called a girl. I think it's led to gender identity problems, poor kid.

I've gotten the occasional, "why's she dressed up like a boy?" though.
I go along with whatever they say first, since Shasta's such a gender-neutral name.

    13. I dont even have my boy yet and I already know he's gonna be called a girl all the time.. He's a DoT Sha... soo he's got a girly face as it is.. -__- but i love him anyway

    14. Well, I tend to be drawn too or choose boys who LOOK like boys. My first boy was a CP Luts Yder. He was very androgynous and pretty. We didn't bond well, so I sold him. After that all my boys have been rather manly. Both my Minimee are based on and look like men. I currently have a Dollmore U-jee head, who I'd say was rather boyish. (I've seen the girl version of him and he just looks like a boy in a dress)

I've ordered another Minimee who is based on a male friend who I thought had the right face for an original character I'd been thinking about. The last male doll I have, (for now) is a volks FCS F-31 head that I bought second hand and I'd have to say it's rather masculine.

Lately there's been an influx of dolls that actually look manly, so I think that'd be the first step. If you are truly bothered by people confusing the sex of your doll and you want a boy - order one - Luts had a few nice sculpts, but SOOM seems to be a front runner in masculine boys with Spinel, Lupin and a few others. I also think face-ups have alot to do with it. A huge factor in gender confusion is overly stylized make-up, or at least I think it is. Boys don't usually have super fine - super thin eyebrows. Tweezing and shaping is a characteristically feminine trait. Go for a thicker brown, just slightly thicker and fuller - not yeti brows.

Wigs help alot. Gender roles certainly dictate that girls have long hair and boys have short hair. Not necessarily true, but it's something that's ingrained in a vast majority of people.

Clothing is a big part too, don't put your full grown boy in a snoopy t-shirt or a set of leggings. I'd say try and dress them like boys. There's an epidemic of people who dress their boys like girls and then get angry when people tell them they have and awful cute girl. It doesn't make sense to me. I'm a firm believer in, if you want a girl doll - buy one. If you decide to make your boy a girly-boy don’t be surprised if people think SHE is beautiful.

    15.

The "Oh she's so cute" comment happened to me when I brought Shigeru to work.

My co-worker who is fascinated with the BJDs knew that he's a HE since she knows about the Japanese Samurai named Okita Souji and has read manga with him in it.

Anyway, when my co-worker was admiring him (he was wearing his default Shinsengumi uniform), my boss wandered in and said, "Such a cute girl"

Well, I understand this because his back was turned to her and he's got his samurai wig on. So from my boss' point of view, he just looks like another girl doll with a long ponytail. :XD:

Then my co-worker corrected my boss saying that it's a boy and turned him around. Then my boss realized that he IS a young boy. She didn't see his face very well when she first caught a glimpse of him so the "what a cute girl" comment was expected.

I haven't brought my other male dolls to work yet, but I'm sure that my Lati Red L (Keith) would be obviously a boy with the suit and short spiky hair and all. :XD:

    16. Heh, well.. Karrian has a goatee and Quincy has stubble, and both of them love to show off their sexy manchests. XD So no one really mistakes them for girls. As for Karo and Bedwyn.. they ARE very feminine, so most of the time, I let it go. xD If it's a friend, I tell them it's a boy and they believe me, but.. I'm never gonna see those strangers again, so why argue with them over the gender of my doll? XD

    17. My only boy, Mao (a SDF Ethan head on a Minimee body) is never mistaken for a girl. ^^ I had never thought that maybe it was because of his sculpt until I experimented and plopped the head on my girl's body. @_@ The resin match was lovely, but the head itself was......it just looked so WRONG XD. So perhaps I'm luckier in that area. Since I'm not a huge fan of boy dolls, and since Mao was the only one that I liked, he HAD to be made manly in my eyes. X3 Therefore, his sparse wardrobe consists of jeans, leather loafers, a suit, and an awesome dragon hoodie. His hair is black mohair, and the only way I'd ever get him fiber is if I found a wig that looked 'manly' enough to me. His faceup is rather dark but still natural colors, sort of a faded brown with darker, heavier eyebrows than my girls (obviously). I think that all of these factors contribute to his 'unquestionable gender' aesthetic, and I'm quite proud that I actually kept him looking like a boy despite his fine features. ^^

    18. The only time my El wasn't referred to as "she" outside the hobby was when he was sitting next to my Soony with her exposed cleavage and the girl I was talking to figured he must be male in comparison to that body. Otherwise, I don't expect people to catch on that he's a boy doll, despite the half-naked, spikey fur-wig mess that he is. I guess I've just gotten used to it.

My Shiwoo has been recognized as male, on occasion. But that didn't start to happen until I bought his current short wig. It helps that he's often dressed in collared shirt and dress shoes.

    19. I have a boy and he's mostly recognized as a girl due to that he used to have long hair. He looks more like a boy now with his fur wig. Ugh, it was annoying when people were saying how cute she was. And when I told them, that he was a boy, they went on joking about him being a transvestite. Oh well. -_-;; It's funny the first 40 times but yea. I do say, "Do you want me to show you that he's a boy?" They pass it up. XD *laughs*

      I usually look at chests of dolls before thinking he is a she or what not. Thought it's hard to tell even so...It's hard and I hate to mistake a doll the incorrect gender. @_@;;;

    20. I have a picture of a migidoll miho as a wallpaper and one of my friends saw it and asked if it was me... ( I am a girl -_-).
