Making Boy Dolls....Boys! [~Small Edit~]

Jul 10, 2008

    1. I would think it's one thing when it's an older person as dolls all tended to be girls, but the younger ones should with baby dolls even being gender specific would know it's not always a girl no matter how it's dressed, but I guess it's same with dogs and cats, people tend to think of dogs as girls because of Lassie and cats can be she's because of attitude. So I guess we should be happy that most everything is a girl, means we have the power now. I say lets storm the white house and get this dumb war stopped! LOL OK just my idea. Anyway I tend to agree with most here, unless it's a friend also in BJD what does it matter.

    2. Honestly, I don't care what random people think of my dolls. I don't even care what most family members think the majority of the time. I once had a boy doll running around shirtless and my mother asked why the poor girl didn't have a shirt on. I had to point out that um, it's a HE, there are no boobs. But it didn't bother me a bit, because he looked manly to me.

My big thing right now is that I'm trying to choose my first real BJD boy, and I want my husband to like the molds of my BJDs too- they're so expensive, and he has to live with them! He insists that if I'm getting a boy, he HAS to know it's a boy, and he seems to think every MSD we've come across is feminine. It gets pretty frustrating after a while, and we still haven't agreed on one.

    3. My mom and aunt constantly call Saif a girl even when he is in a tank top and obviously boob-less. My sister is the only family member who consistently calls him a dude (a gay dude, but at least a dude... Actually, I think my sister takes Saif for bisexual because he is somehow gay for my Taeyang, but kidnapping her Pullip also... a bisexual player! xD)

I haven't ever explained to anyone that Saif has a penis though. My mother highly disapproves of the yaoi she found I had so I don't think it would go over well to explain my doll's got a pecker.

I plan to buy/make Saif some military theme clothes later... though my mom would probably just start assuming I want my doll to dress like me...I wear loads of camo and my favorite hats are a tie between a collapsible top hat that can launch small animals into the air (whoever made the springs for it needs to win a medal xD) and a military officer's hat.

So I guess putting an androgynous doll next to a tomboy girl (according to my sister, I dress like a really weird 13-year-old boy on some days) is just asking for gender confusion xD

    4. Zashin has been called a girl a million and one times while most of my other boys hardly ever get mistaken, even though I think quite a few of them look rather girly. XD

    5. I'm thinking my future boy will probably be mistaken for a girl by unknowing folks. I don't even want to show my dad the Crobidoll photos of him because I know they'll think he's suppose to be a girl xD (well, technically, people have made him both, so...)

But if someone says, 'She's so cute!' I'll probably just say yes xD

    6. I sometimes wonder if I'm the only one who has a male doll that has NEVER been mistaken for a girl as far as I remember. I have a Chiwoo, which is actually a pretty feminine mold if you're not careful. My boy has always been the jeans and shirt type, with a short haircut and a very simple faceup. I'd be a little confused if he was mistaken for a girl, but if he was any less 'boyish' I would understand why.

I think the big point is that people need to understand that to most people, anything resembling makeup will cue the 'tomboy' thing, not 'boy.' Your doll have heavy eyeshadow? Lush eyelashes? It's like the models that have short hair. Of course, I personally think that unless your doll is a pierced biker, if it has long hair or something you should not complain about people mistaking it for a girl. I have actually heard "Waah! I took my doll out in a pretty dress and I don't know why people didn't see that he was a boy! They're so stupid!!!"

    7. Me too. Zee has never been seen as anything other than a boy.

I do believe in striking out and finding your own style, but you have to remember that the rest of the world isn't going to be on the same wavelength.

If you dress your boy in a pink dress with bracelets and earrings and a long wig, and he has glossy lips, long eyelashes and pronounced eyeshadow, I think you can kiss goodbye to anyone outside of this hobby calling him a boy, just because in western culture, people with long hair, wearing pink, with lots of make-up are more likely to be girls than boys and these dolls are so unfamiliar to a lot of people they latch on to the only reference they have, so they admire your 'girl' and say how pretty 'she' is.

I think you only have a right to be offended if someone insults your doll, if they are complimenting you, you can't be too harsh on them for not seeing the masculinity underneath all that girly 'fooferah'.

    8. Apparently Vitya looks more like Draco Malfoy than he does a girl. He's been wearing his asylum garb around the house recently and even those who have never seen him know he's a gent- not least of all because his pants are... kind of tight. When he's wearing them that is. He's got an Area effect going on.
But I'm still working on the military prints, including the hat. 'Cos he really is a teenage boy...

    9. I have successfully turned two "girly" looking boys (CP Luts Lahoo & Camine) into boys to the non-doll folks by doing a few things. I've dressed them in very male, Japanese street-punk fashions, put short wigs, and giving them darker heavier eye brows.

My Unidoll Jace has never been mistaken for a girl by anyone!!

    10. :"D
Woei, but i LOVE unisex boys ;3; please don't turn are semi girly men into MALES XB
I actually never ever..until last week [the horror] mistaken a boy for a girl.

Most of the Manly-ness you can get is trough the eyebrows,
but yeah not everyone wants to redo the faceup of their dolls lol.
Id say Shorter hair, fur put on this way that it seems to create sideburns

It is something i tell people to draw when they have a hard time drawing men, and it seems to work great on dolls.

      Like this :"D ..omg he looks so final fantasy ;3;

      Besides that,
well i guess some people are just..blind, last time on a meeting a women called a Dollshe Bernard a girl..
And Iroshi the super Male El with eyebrows about 2 cm wide a cute church girl... [wait what? He has vampire teeth O_______________________o"]

    11. Sideburns! That's a great idea! I'm definitely going to try that! :aheartbea:

    12. Caleb, my DollZone BBKay has never been mistaken for a girl. He's always dressed in very boyish clothes, and wears a very short wig. I also think it helps that his name is easily recognized as a boys' name.

    13. I have to say, most of the Dollshe boys would make GREAT girls. Seriously. <3

    14. So far, my Ken has not been mistaken for a girl...even before I started sanding the immature girl's chest away. I guess carrying him around topless helped a lot, as the people I had him around before he was officially mine, and so before my mods could start, simply wouldn't expect me to carry around a topless female doll. Now...once I've got his wig, eyes, and clothes all finished and start taking him out in earnest and not just around family, that could change. I hope it doesn't...I want my male dolls SEEN as male (even if they ARE on modded female bodies...though that should only be Ken) and my females clearly seen as females, especially once I have them all, and so can have them next to one another.

    15. Even though Ichiro is a female head on a male body, I don't have problems with him being mistaken for female at all. He has a very subdued, masculine faceup barring a little extra eyeliner and is almost always in a suit.

The same goes for Bastien despite his massive load of eyeshadow and long hair, but B. is a very obviously masculine sculpt.

    16. Naiara:

Love the photo. What sculpt is boy?? He is beautiful!!

    17. Aaahh, it's a bit hit and miss with me. I'd say the manliest doll I have is Vin, and even he gets called a girl.

      I was actually sitting outside with Eiji yesterday, and an elderly woman was walking past my apartment complex. She asked me what I was doing and then looked at Eiji and said "Aw, who's this? Is he your boyfriend?" and we had a giggle. But I was -so- surprised that she immediately saw Eiji as a boy, but really, he was dressed boyish, had boyish hair, and was generally boyish looking - despite being a girl mold. I was surprised mostly because she was older, but I guess it's not really fair of me to judge people like that. Dress them as a boy, boyish wigs, boyish faceup... but beyond that's it's kind of all you can.. do XD;;

    18. I have one very femmy boy, and he does get mistaken for a girl, but that's understandable and I have one guy that has long hair--a sure fire way to confuse people. My other guys dress like pretty average guys, have natural looking faceups and short hair. Consequently, I've never had trouble with people mistaking them for girls.

    19. All I have to say is facial hair. Goatee or Mustache or whatever is your preference.

    20. Manly arms help too!
