Making Boy Dolls....Boys! [~Small Edit~]

Jul 10, 2008

    1. Well, my Morgan has a beard and though it looks quite natural ( no offence but with many bearded BJDs I've seen, the beard looks a little as if a little boy had decided to wear a false beard ...) my sister still insists on him looking quite feminine. Of course, she hasn't seen what some of the other boys look like ... *lol* Anyways, it's the manliest I can get Morgan to look without huge modifications.

    2. I haven't gotten it yet with my only boy, but I'm fearing it.

Especially since he is supposed to be a super gay dude.

But, I'm sure I'll figure it out. Thankfully his body is manly enough that he wont get mistaken by girlie limbs or anything like that. I guess I'll just have to be careful with his faceup and take it as it comes.

    3. All of my boys don't get mistaken as girls, with the exception of my Lati M, due to his long hair.

    4. People who don't know anything about dolls will automatically think that any doll is a girl. This happened with my uncle, he saw me with kyoshi once and the first thing he said was "that's a weird doll, she dresses like a boy!" I just stared at him :| and kept on playing with my boy. Other than that, I haven't had problems with this, then again, I don't show them to anyone except my family or best friends and they all know that I'm not fond of girl dolls (except my Jubilee <3)

Shane is the manliest one of my crew, he NEVER gets mistaken as a girl. I have a cousin who stayed over at our house for 1 week and she always goes into everybody's rooms without knocking! >_< she went into my room twice while I was taking pictures of Shane (the day he arrived) as soon as she saw him she was like: "wow, he's beautiful! I want one! *touches his face*" or she tried to because I took him away from her before she was able to put her fingers on him >_> anyway, she immediately recognized him as a boy, that's something I didn't think about until i saw this thread...

    5. Its easy to get your boy recognized as a boy by dressing him- like a boy. Five out of six of mine have never been mistaken for a girl. The sixth one I don't take offence because I can't really blame them for being mistaken.

    6. My K has been mistaken for a girl once, but that was because the person who saw him had the idea that all dolls are girls. Apart from that one time 'incident', people have always seen my guys for guys. They all wear boy clothes, have natural face-ups, don't wear jewelry (Cicero is the only exception: He wears a silver flute around his neck and will have an earring in the future) and have short wigs. But I must confess: It helps to have a girl doll sitting next to them in a giant dress and with a long curly wig .

    7. To make boys look like boys, it really comes down to making them look the way a typical boy "should look" based on the standard of the society around.

For instance, if long sleek hair is considered feminine, people are going to think it's a girl.

I think the hair has a lot to do with making it look like a boy. Short, somewhat unkempt hair. Think of the way a boy might style the hair depending on age. Another tip is to not have eyelashes. They can still be on the face-up, but smaller and not black. What I mean is no long sweeping lashes on the upper lid.

The clothes also have a lot to do with it. Colours and style are crucial. For style especially, the most typically boyish or manly styles.

    8. XD; 80% of the people who see draco think he's a girl. ;3; I normally leave the top two buttons of his shirt popped open so that they can see his manly chest and amazingly freakishly toned abs, but normally people just look at his face and go "ooo, she's pretty. what's her name?" XD; then I'll go "DDDDD8 it's a guyyyyyy >< *points at his chest* OTLOTL

      <3 I do have some very very nice schoolmates who ain't in the hobby who actually noticed that he's not a girl tho. XD when I get their "ooo, he's so cute~ what's his name?" I'll go "HOMG YOU CAN TELL? <333333333" Xd;

=w= my dad just keeps insisting he's a girl, even tho I showed him his naked chest and said that he has a peen. he just went "it's a girl with a very toned chest and a peen. look, you see the boobs there"... Orzorzorz D8 HE HAS TONED FIT VERY SLIGHT MANBOOBS. rawr. x3x when I get his partner, he'll be someone with a totally manly sculpt, I swear. D<

generally, ithink it's the faceup and long wigs that causes people to think that our boys are girls... XD; but I like girly faceups on my boy and his long blonde wig more then any of the short manlier wigs I have, so I'll have to deal with the girl comments. don't mind much tho, cos I like little boys in girl clothing... toomuchshoutacough... *SHOUTABEAR SHOT DEAD*

    9. I always dress my dolls as boys ^^ They have short wigs and male styled clothing >3< I think I've only had one person ask if he was a girl or boy XD And my (non-doll) friends sometimes have to double check by asking me XDDDD

    10. I haven't seen this mentioned, but...
I took my Lati Red 'out' for the first time to the local arts festival, and the only person who mistook him for a 'she' was a little old Inuvialuit lady who made dolls herself, so was probably used to thinking "she=doll" (gender is handled very differently in the Inuvaluktun language compared to English).

The reason nobody else made this error is how I had him dressed: rolled-leg bib overalls with no shirt underneath, 'po' farm-boy'-style. Nothin' like exposed laddered abs, buff pecs and muscled arms to demonstrate masculinity! Also, it was hot as seven hells that day, so at least he looked cool n' comfy.

    11. Well, I once owned a T-shirt that said "I AM A BOY" in huge letters on the front, and I put that on my 60cm Narin when I took him to a doll show.

Nobody asked whether he was a girl, but a lot of people asked whether he was supposed to be Harry Potter. :doh

(BTW, tigerbaby, that's fascinating about the Inuvaluktun language!)

    12. "Um.....He is a male. Do you not understand that? Because um....what girl would walk around with no top? Serioulsy. I would that's for sure, would you?.......He's not a flat chested girl either. He's correct...and my girls have a -way- bigger chest than him....and um, my aunt's right over there...I uh....I have to go."

I had to explain this to a slightly odd persistentlady. Luckily her two friends in the store with her were not that weird and knew immediately that he was male. My boy has very short hair and boyish features, but this lady just wanted to insist on calling him "her" all day. I would have unzipped those jeans if it wasn't in the middle the store that day!

XD So I just sat him behind the desk with a scrapbook baby sign saying "It's a BOY!" to go with his lack of shirt. No more "she" comments for the rest of the day. :)

    13. Sometimes Shinta gets mistaken for a girl and I must admit with his long wig, he looks pretty girlish when he wearing his hair loose. It's mostly his face that does it I think. But normally he wears his hakama outfit and his hair tied up so he looks more male.

    14. Mmmm I've never had any of my boys called girls, suprisingly since all of them look slightly androgynous. XD

Probably cause not many people talk about them..... or I don't take them out much. :nowords:

    15. I think it's true that the concept "doll" is automatically registered as female. Dolls depict girls. Period. I have found that most people get the right perspective if I refer to the perhaps most wellknown aspect of Asian culture here in europe: mangas and anime. THEN they suddenly see it is indeed a boy.

But honestly: how do you explain the gender question to someone who referrs to a naked-chested UniDoll Jace as "she"???!!

Hopeless, if you ask me. I just smiled and noded and thanked the lady for the compliment. She thought "she" was a wonderful doll.

    16. I do agree that non-doll people tend to assume that all dolls are female, at least in the U.S. With that said, my big SM Namu hybrid has never been mistaken for a girl. Even with his longish hair, he's just too obviously male to miss. I have gotten a lot of "he's so pretty" comments, but that's what I was going for. :) As for what accomplishes this, I think the brows are the number one thing in getting a doll to be masculine or feminine, guys should have less groomed, thicker brows.

    17. at a meeting, we had ppl arround us and a girl pointed charmyc's doll, sebastian, and said : this is my favourite! shes so pretty!
he really was not dressed like a girl ô_o
Also, i think someone at the meet called my boy she. i had a shirtless boy!! XD it just could'nt've been more obvious it was not a girl. i even blushes his ''habs''. and it suprised me a BJD owner said that! maybe she actually meant he... :| who know

    18. My doll boys was never actually mistaken for girls, though some people do say "they all are girly-looking" (about boys) or something like that.

I'm not sure if it qualifies like "yes, I managed that" though. I never did it intentionally, and though most of my boys wear definitely male clothing - or go open-breasted, so no mistake there - they have medium to long hair, earrings and other jewelery.

    19. All non-BJD people think ALL my guys are girls.
Even though non of my boys are very girly or even gay!

Tough I will say, around 90% of boy dolls can easily pass off as girls with a long wig and a dress. They're faces are just made like that. :sweat

    20. My cousin did recognise my twins as boys, but I can't say I did anything in particular to make them more boyish ^ ^; They were both in their default BF outfits and faceup. I only slapped on the wigs, and longish ones at that (it's so hard to find decent synthetic fiber short hair wigs!)...

Now I've got them in some Nine9 style clothes, and personally I can't see how it is possible that people can still mistake them for girls anymore.
