It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Mechanizing a BJD

Dec 28, 2012

    1. In all honesty, something like that would creep me out big time.
I don't want my dolls (any of them) moving around or displaying any kind of intelligence/personality. The idea sounds very creepy (to me). I wouldn't be able to maintain a doll-shaped robot with me.

HoushiChan mentioned the hypotesis of people turning the possibility of having robot BJDs into something else, and this behaviour becoming widespread. There are people who already use dolls that way today within the possibilities that exist and are available to them - and anyway, I think it's their problem... In my opinion, when it comes to matters like these (the purpose owners give their dolls), if there's no hurt, then there's no real issue in it. I don't care now, and I don't think I would care then.
But in the end, discussions like that are all fun, since it seems such a distant, unrealistic possibility :D
Even if, in the very distant future, that kind of possibility (BJD-shaped cyborgs or something of the sort :o) became a reality available to the average person, I doubt it would attract more people in number than collecting BJDs (for any purpose) attracts today.

RedKitsune, I've never read Cloud Atlas, and that sounds horrifying :( I think that if AI dolls eventually became a cheap and popular technology to the point where everyone has access to it, then that kind of scenario would definitely become a reality...

    2. Technically speaking we already have the technology to make at the least a Yo with your average smartphone capabilities and limited movement (so, yes, a Sumomo) and if you think of the body as a snap on cell phone cover, it would be possible to make them customizable as well. There just hasn't been anyone who tried to make one yet. So anyone on here with electronics skills, get to it!

    3. I think it has the potential to be quite creepy. A PukiFee/Lati Yellows/YoSD/LittleFee would probably be alright as long as there was an off-button, but some of the larger dolls could be scary rather than helpful or cute. A moving Lusion Doll would be very unnerving.

I like that dolls are blank canvases for our creativity, I don't know whether a robot BJD would necessarily be as creative. They would be able to move independently, potentially dress themselves or even have opinions about what they wear(!) but what would you do if you really wanted to wipe the doll's face-up and it didn't want you to? What about if you liked a pair of eyes but the doll wanted to keep the ones it was wearing? I like my dolls inanimate. I don't mistreat them, but I wouldn't want a doll talking back to me about not wanting to wear the outfit I picked!

    4. I wouldn't be interested unless I had complete control over the programming. I buy my dolls to represent my own characters, and while having AIs to represent them would be interesting, having robots that act 'out of character' that couldn't be modified would be straight up awful for me.

Normally I'd be pessimistic about the odds of something like open source robots, but I know there's a strong connection between 3D-printing and open source activism, so maybe one day they'll be possible.

    5. So on the internet today I've come across this (NSFW). A robotic BJD.

She is packed full of sensors that react to touch, sound, sight. The frame built for her should fit inside a Dollfie Dream, so your favourite sculpts of those can become animated!

Personally, I'm REALLY excited for this! I adore robots and was just the other day telling my partner how much I want a little robotic doll! I've seen other BJDs that move on their own, but not to this extent, and with the ability to detect so much. Personally, I can't wait, and I'll be saving up!

    6. Of course it would be Dolfie Dreams...
I want robotic Iplehouse men myself...
      ~off in a little dream~
The biggest reasons I'd love robotic BJDs involve posing w/o all the futzing & getting the dear creatures to dress THEMSELVES -
      LOL

    7. So I think it'd be rad to have a little robot doll sitting on my desk swinging her legs back and forth and all but then I just think about those movies where the robots realize they're smarter than people and kind of doubt that I'd ever want a robot in my house all that much.

    8. I think the idea of the "Smart Doll" is pretty interesting. It's not so much AI as an interactive toy; a bit like a Furby or something. But I like my dolls (even my Dollfie Dreams) because of their doll-ness. I don't know how else to explain it. I like their inanimate status. It lets me have total control over their 'personalities' and back stories and what not. It would be neat to have a robotic BJD but I don't think I could get as attached to one. It would be more of a novelty to me.

    9. the one Danny Choo has been working on is quite incredible, i want one

    10. If the possibility of a robot framework inside of one of my dolls is really quite exciting for me! It would make photoshoots &/or videos much easier to do, haha.
I just would hope that there is an off switch so the doll doesn't go creeping around the house at night. *shiver*

    11. i know this isnt a bjd, and it was made over 200 years ago, but this tread reminded me of this
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0RnT4JBuEI
saw this a while ago, he's completly clock work, and you imput the message you want him to write, and he writes it. by hand. its really really amazing, and i recomend having a look midle of the video, where you can see his mechanics

    12. This is kinda cool, but I can't see ever doing it myself. I love my doll the way she is, and when I have my own mini machine shop, I'll probably be doing dozens of other tiny projects.

    13. That is quite cool, but the 'Smart Doll' wouldn't be on-topic for this particular forum. I don't know how well she would be able to move about, but it'll be interesting to see how the project develops.

    14. Not sure if there is a post like this.
I was on FaceBook and I saw a post about a smart doll.
Its a doll with robot parts. SO it moves Via remote control.
Its like a moving BJD. Oh My Goodness!!

Makes me wonder if those parts would work in a BJD. SInce the prototype is made using a 3D Printer.
I Think it would be cool If your dolls could move. It would make recording videos easier and imagine the Vlogs and box openings.
I would do it to freak people out

SO what do you think about the smart doll?

    15. I wouldn't want one. lol I think the idea is interesting, but I much prefer the "old fashioned" playing, using imagination. I never have really been a fan of toys that do things, like the singing celebrity dolls, or the dancing Barbies or action figures with real action. Also, my dolls are my role play characters, who all have their own personalities, ways of speaking and moving and I feel like a doll that moved or spoke or interacted on its own would take away from the character imagined.

    16. Hm. I like my dolls to be dolls. And if you can't take them easily apart, they would indeed be worthless to me. I love making movie costumes. For my "Iron Man Project", it is essential that you can take the doll completely apart, as you put on the armour over each body part. I am avoiding closures as much as possible, as this simply looks much better. Or just imagine other sophisticated, maybe historical clothing. Where you just have the wrist opening as tight as it is, and you have to take off the hand to put the jacket on. So that would be an important aspect for me.
