1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Miriam first, I am so fine--new from Roxy Doll

Mar 29, 2007

    1. Toveb:
I actually had a completely different opinion when I saw this doll as I posted above. I picture her as a vengeful spirit or a warrior, a being of defiance. Not everyone is reading weakness from her, especially since the facial expression doesn't suggest that. Obviously she isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, but it's interesting that pulling from our own backgrounds and our own perceptions different people are reacting to her in vastly opposing ways. Often times on this board users raise the issue that these dolls are art, but like all great art, if it's a powerful image it's going to cause controversy. It's interesting, I posted an image of her to my lj to see what my female friends thought. They are not doll people at all, and most are fairly outspoken feminists. The only caveat is that they are pretty much all horror/fantasy fans. They see her as a supernatural being or ghost, and one suggested that she would look great wearing broken armor like she was coming back from battle.

EDITED TO ADD: I see that they responded to the comment about Miriam on the Q&A. I really liked their answer, that the cuts are not literal, they're an outward symbol of mental turmoil or pain. I'm actually impressed with this doll because it's really pushing the envelope of a doll as art, not just something cute to dress up (not that there's anything wrong with being cute and dressing up! :D)

    2. This is only MHO but i think the cuts etc look a bit daft......what a waste of effort. Not particulary realistic nor quite gory enough to be shocking.
      She's a gorgous girl though.
As for women being portrayed as victims etc - statistically women are the victims in either domestic abuse or crime so there's not a lot we can do about that........apart from locking up all the men (ahhh i can dream can't i?).

I'm more concerned about women being portrayed as STUPID DUMB BIMBOS.
But that discussion is probably for another day on a another forum in a galaxy far far away ^_^

    3. I like her, but wouldn't buy her. I like dolls to play with; she seems more of a display creature.

    4. We cannot go on statistics as far as number of Male on Female ( and vice versa ) crimes reported. Men who are victimized by other men and women are less likely to report it than women are. Sad but true.

The reason there are many of the same dolls with different personalities is because the dolls become what we project upon them.

It's interesting as what other people who see Miriam think of her.

    5. I'm going to go with Mamehisa... to me the cuts do not look good or realistic. She's trying to be a shock, but just doesn't quite make it. And yeah, I would have no clue what to dress her up in. With the cuts so visible, she would really never be a versatile doll.

    6. She makes me want to cry ... I dont like her at all. I agree with Tinybear my dolls make me smile when I look at them she makes me shudder. I love roxydoll sculpts but this is wrong.

    7. I actually really like her! The background story NotDoll Lab gave in their reply cemented my decision :D I think she represents all the mental anguish we go through in life, and how she remains strong despite all that.
I really think I want to save up for her :aheartbea

    8. intermission:
That's totally where I am. I want to get her to commemorate darker days. Buying her would derail some other plans, so I'll have to think on it. At least I have until june to make up my mind.

    9. what ever she depicts ...and I honestly try not to look
she makes me flinch ...I keep thinking Papercuts ...OUCH

but I am a complete woos I try not to watch the news , it upsets me
      I hate horror flicks

I thought 13 Ghosts was terrible
Zombies dawn of the dead gave me nightmares for years LOL

LOL even Saving Private Ryan left me traumatised and I cried from start to end
but there again I cried at Forest Gump :sweat
my family think I am a wet blanket

I suppose I find sancuary in my dolls .a peace I dont find in her

I do like the second Mirriam however ...sort of Victorian Ghost
but I just dont like the Huge Boobie body
I would much prefere her on a Lucy style
If they made the Lucy body larger , with Mirriam head

I would be all over it like a rash

but I cannot take to this style body ...I like to see what other people do with them
but I know they arnt for me

    10. Tinybear: :hamster: <~ Group hug. :)

I've seen more gory dolls and read stories with dolls loosing limbs and such...
Miriam's got a very beautiful face sculpt, IMHO

    11. giggles ...thankies I :aheartbea :hamster:

    12. A doll that shares my name and is a complete... Freak... XD
Not my type of girl but still intersting in a way ~

    13. Am I reading it correctly, she's only 25cm tall? I would have guessed she'd be Unoa/Mini size.

I'd own her, but I'm a horror fan as well.

    14. Unoa's are 43-44 cm tall.

    15. I think she looks, as has been suggested, more defiant than anything.
Her name, for heaven's sake is Miriam"I am so proud".
      She's not a victim.
She's a survivor. Someone who doesn't let hurt affect her.

At least, thats how I see it.

    16. Her name is Miram first, I am so fine

    17. I've almost decided to order this freaky little girl, but I'm waiting until closer to the nyc dolpa. I want to see what their exclusive will be. I really like Miriam, and I haven't been really attracted to tinies in the past. For me it's still a bit of a hurdle getting past paying so much for such a small doll. Then again, she is a fullset. Does anyone know if they fill all of the orders they get, right up until the end of the ordering period? Is there a chance that if they get tons of orders they might cut the ordering period off sooner? I've never ordered from NotDoll before, and I've never bought a limited.
I might be off here, but I think the language barrier got in the way a bit with NotDoll conveying their intent with this doll. The phrase "I am so fine", at least to my way of thinking, has a connotation of a pride in the physical. I mean if someone thinks they are really attractive they might say "I am so fine!" If you look at in that context, considering her body is covered in gashes, it seems like she's saying the injuries are beautiful. But when you read NotDoll's reply on the Q&A board it appears that they meant "fine" in the emotional sense. Are you okay? Yes, I am fine. Which would be in keeping with their idea that the cuts are emotional damage not physical injury. I wish they'd have left the "so" out, lol :D

    18. Yeah. That's why I made that mistake. I still think she seems a symbol of pride and rising above challenges.

Doesn't mean I like her though, I don't xD I like the witch better.

    19. ...ah, so this is what all the fuss was about. *Late to the party, as usual* Add me to the side whose initial reaction was inclined toward self-inflicted wounds and not an outside attack.

Well, if you look at the history of topics in General Discussion, you'll see that every so often, someone brings up the concept of dolls that resemble selves - either as a manifestation of one's personality or traits thereof (whether actual or desired), or 'What doll most resembles you?', or even the possibility of customizing a doll to be a miniature of the owner. The latter has generally gotten at least something of a positive response even here, and I know that there have been 'mainstream' (non-BJD) companies that cater to it as well.

I personally haven't been interested in it myself, because I don't find myself nice to look at and therefore wouldn't want a doll constantly reminding me of my face. However, if I had the money, I'd snap Miriam First up in a heartbeat because she reflects both what I am and what I want to be. I see in her not weakness or victimization, but the strength that I don't have - the strength to ignore the physical pain, the strength to modify and mutilate without fear, the strength to wear her scars, both internal and external, with pride. Her declaration of 'I am so fine' matches my own belief that acts against oneself shouldn't automatically result in punishment or reconditioning; being told that it's wrong or that you're sick and need help. I think she's beautiful. I'd love to have her as an extension of myself for when I need to be that and can't.

    20. Personally, I love her. I really wish she wasn't limited. I want to get her, but I won't be able to by the deadline. All I can hope for is to run across her second hand in the marketplace. :D Anyway, I love horror movies, and I loved the Th13teen Ghosts movie.
