Mistakes Made In The Hobby

Oct 16, 2014

    1. I bought a awesome outfit for my minifee....only to realise I have a littlefee I get so confused with fairyland sculpts

    2. 1) Once while I was posing my girl, she fell on her face and now she has chipped face up.
      2) Another time when I was careless she started falling again and I thrown camera that I had in my hand, so i could catch her. I had to buy new camera.
      3) Another mistakes was thinking that sd or 1/3 sized shoes, clothes, wigs means that they will fit every sd sized doll. Now I have shoes that I probably will never use.

There are and will be probably more mistakes.

    3. lol right?! And also as bad - BJD shopping under the influence of friends. I swear I know the most enabling people on the planet. Get us all in a room and it's "BUY THAT NOW!!". Then suddenly you're wondering how you ended up with a weird anthro you'd never have looked at otherwise....

    4. This is so true!
When you ask a friend about advise and the answer is always "YES! BUY IT NOW!"

    5. I don't say buy that now, unless the person says they've been looking for it for a while. At Dollism, someone was looking at a fullset outfit, saying "I've been looking for this for ages but whenever I find it pieces are missing!" And the entire room said "buy it!" And that was good because that wasn't an impulse buy... I don't encourage impulse buys because just because it's pretty and you like it initially doean't mean you'll like it long term.

    6. ...I started doing a faceup on a doll with dark tan resin, messed it up so I used a non-acetone nailpolish remover to clean it up. When I washed the head it appeared to get a cloudy film on it so I repeated the process until it hit me that I had never bothered to test out the remover on the headcap first (too excited to start I guess!)...luckily I was able to restore most of the colour but totally a lesson learned there.

    7. That actually just sounds like sealant residue left behind by the remover. Though I still wouldn't use any nailpolish remover on a doll because of all the mystery ingredients that might have unexpected reactions, I don't think I'd really call that one a mistake, as much as a misunderstanding. :)

    8. Well, I did test it out on the headcap after to test it out and see if it was the culprit and it did the exact same thing. Sorry, I guess I kinda left that out. Dx

Other than that I've had zero problems with the non-acetone remover, no other ill effects and its been months since I've done most of their faces. No spontaneous melting yet!

    9. For me there are really only a couple of things that come to mind. Rushing through trying to get eyes lined correctly and ending up tearing of the eyelashes. ARGH The other is buying too many outfits for one doll and realizing that I wasn't using half of that stuff and could have applied it to another doll. Using ticky tack to hold on a wig instead of a velcro piece. I messed up a wig this way. Dump stupid..hit the head on the wall lol.

    10. First mistake - My options for my first doll were narrowed down to either the last one of a Limited Edition or a blank of the sculpt I knew I wanted. Once shipping cost was added on, the price difference scared me away from the L.E.
I *love* the blank one I got, and her quality made me realize it would have been completely worth the price difference.
Since then I've spent approximately the difference in price just trying to get my customized doll look as nice as the L.E.

Second Mistake - I resolved to purchase that L.E if she was still available by my birthday month (November,) watched her listing like a hawk all summer long, and then.. this week, the last week in October, someone else bought her.

I'm the opposite of the impulsive buyers.. I hesitate too long and then fate slaps me in the face with "it's not meant to be!" And no, those words do not make me feel any better... :pout:

    11. I think the worst mistake I've made so far was trying to sew an outfit for my Model F with totally unsuitable fabric.

During a test fitting, her hand caught on the inside of the sleeve and broke off. :doh I've since mended her hand, but I definitely learned my lesson about the importance of having the right materials.

    12. Leaving my 16cm girl's apron at work. x_x Found it in the trash this morning covered in coffee grounds.

    13. I'm still a newbie so I would say my first mistake was buying a doll on layaway from a picture on the web. Now I am still paying for it but since then have grown to love some other sculpt. Now wishing I had not bought that layaway so I could have purchased the ones I really want 2nd hand!

    14. My first mistake was trying to make a wig for my 1/4 bjd out of some extensions I bought for myself a while back. I snipped off the hair from her default wig (which, upon retrospect, was beautiful and totally not worth experimenting on :pout:). The extensions are useless now and the wig did not turn out as planned. :P Wig making is ridiculously hard! Cheers to those who make them!

Second, I bought 6.5cm shoes for my doll who has 5.0cm feet. She looks like she has clown feet for now. :P I now realize the power of a single cm.

      Lesson have been learned. :)

    15. I've had my doll for less than a month, and he's already taken a nose dive. Thankfully nothing happened to him, he just got a little smudge on his nose that came right off. I'm definitely going to be more careful about where he stands/if he is stable. In retrospect, a book on the couch was a terrible idea.

Thanks for this thread, I'm reviewing it for what to avoid doing/make sure I do. :)

You wash denim clothing with water and vinegar? I haven't received any of the clothes I got for my doll yet.

I didn't realize you had to wash some clothes first though. (I did get white underclothes for black pants to avoid accidents.)

    16. It's always best to rinse your dark colored clothing with vinegar and water, just to keep them from staining your doll. :) My friend had a little pair of jeans for her 16cm and he was all kinds of blue and black when she went to take them off a few months later. Fortunately, it all came off, but it is pretty scary, especially for a first time BJD owner (like my friend was).

    17. Great to know. Thank you. ^^

    18. Worst mistake I made In my early days in the hobby was careing what others thought of me. Seriously, when I think about all the time I wasted worrying about offending others and wringing my hands over others not liking my taste in dolls it's a crying shame. My first few years in the hobby I was so afraid I'd end up crucified on denofdemons I never posted photos of my dolls and hid my doll choices. Looking back now I realize how stupid I was to ever care that much lol

    19. In my foolish early modding days, I tried to remove breasts with a knife. A kitchen knife. Needless to say, I still have the scar. Always use the proper tools for intensive projects! x_o

    20. Even though I did research ahead of time, the first 2 or 3 months into the hobby I didn't know you could safely take the dolls head off without having to restring it. Had I known that earlier, putting eyes in would have been a lot easier to do!

Also when there was a fleck of dirt on my doll without thinking I used my nail to scratch it off. So he ended up with a small scratch. I have no clue why I did that, I wasn't thinking. I was able to buff it out later but still.
