It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Money is tight, which come first, Limited sculpt and faceup or wigs?

Aug 10, 2015

    1. Hi, I dunno if there's any thread about this before, but if there's one, please delete this thread >.<

I just want to ask some fellow member here, please help me >.<
If your money is really tight, and the doll is limited, which would be your priority?

The sculpt with faceup or you buy the doll without faceup (with condition you can't paint your own doll) and when you have money, do you send the head to a faceup artist?
or you just buy the head (if the company offered the limited head without the body)
or you buy it full (head+body+special parts) or you choose (head+body+faceup)?
and if you just buy a new size doll that you never own, and money is tight, which one would be your priority, doll with the wigs or with the faceup?

Which is your priority if your money is tight?

      Thank you >.<

    2. Hmm... if I really liked the company faceup, I would choose head+body+faceup. I've run into problems in the past where I've ordered the head, but had to find a body secondhand, because the company discontinued the certain color I needed. I've also purchased a limited head in the past with faceup and one without faceup, and I wished I had ordered the limited head with the makeup.

      Er, sorry if this isn't helpful at all. ^^;;

    3. If you like the company body, buy it with the body. Bodies are more expensive than heads, so the body should be a priority so you don't have a floating head.

For the rest does the standard face-up and special parts something you want a lot? Would they work for the character (if you create them)? If they don't work there's no point on getting them and the money can be used for somethic else.
Is there a face-up artist on your country that makes it cheaper than buying on the store and you would have the advantage of doing exactly as you want? If yes, see their feedback and how long they take, shipping and etc. Maybe is worth to go with them.

Wigs are relatively cheap, $8-30, unless you go for a custom one or alpaca. So the bigger problem is where you buy because shipping, if is a place with good shipping you can buy later. If is expensive maybe is better buy together with the doll to avoid paying two high shippings. But you could see would be better with a bald doll with face-up or a blank doll with hair? In the end you will need to chose what work better for you.

    4. Every situation is different but in general I'd recommend body + head. I typically prefer custom face-ups so not having the LE face-up wouldn't bother me---same goes for the fullset clothes, wig, and/or eyes.

Now if it was an LE with fantasy parts I preferred to the human parts (like a Soom MD), I'd join and/or host a split so I could get the combo of parts I wanted.

    5. Money usually is tight for me, and if I feel in love with a limited doll, I would do what I could to get it. Even if that meant buying a blank head. I've always done my own faceups (with a couple of exceptions), so budgeting for a faceup has never been something I've given much thought. If I want a full doll, it's usually cheaper to buy it full than piece it together, but if a hybrid is okay to me, then I'll grab the head and wig and eyes, and get a body later, or have it share with another, if it works.

    6. For me personally, I don't ever order company faceups, so that's not even a factor. When it comes to limited dolls, I've learned my lesson after missing some--if I can at all swing getting one, and I know I want it, then I order that. Wigs I do in larger batches every few months; the ones I like are not limited, so I never have any pressing time concern on getting them ordered in. And faceups I do myself, when the humidity is good and I have the time.

    7. I think it depends on the situation..... Like right now, im planning on getting a popovy, which are really expensive so I plan to only get the doll. But earlier this year I focused on wigs and clothes.

    8. I tend to buy a full doll, the blank head plus the body, and usually extra hands. If I couldn't do the faceups myself, then I would probably just buy the company faceup, since that is the simplest solution. I have enough wigs that I don't have to worry much about that. I usually order one pair of shoes with the doll to make sure I have a pair that fit. I spend the waiting time until the doll arrives searching for or making THE PERFECT WIG and eyes and fabric for the dolls eventual wardrobe. Since I am an artist and a seamstress I pretty much do all my own faceups, sometimes make their wigs, and I make all their clothes. Eyes aren't much of an issue any more, as I probably own at least 6 pair per doll. I buy a lot of doll shoes though. I need to learn to make shoes.

    9. If money is tight, I will try to get just the head, no face-up or eyes or wigs. I do most of my own face-ups anyway, so I generally don't see the need to pay for one from the company. If I can get just the head with no body, then I will do that. (This is how I've ended up with a box full of limited and event heads with no bodies. XD) Everything else will eventually happen, and I'm patient.

    10. Frankly, if I like the full doll, I would go with head + body. If money is supertight and you can get the head alone, then go with the head. You can always get the body or maybe after a bit of research another body which you may like even better.
Anything else -face-up, wig, clothes, are items you can get or even make later. On the marketplace, or make them yourself. These are, in my opinion, all things which can come one after the other.

    11. If money is thight and I can't pay for the full doll, I just let it pass. I did so before and I got over it. After all it's just a doll anyway, you won't die from not owning that one limited doll that was a little bit pretty. There will be more (limited) dolls that will suit my taste. And I would probably buy the head with a face-up if I can't do it myself and really like the face-up. But that's only when I can pay for the full doll with face-up.

Then again, I'm not the kind of person who would grief long over not owning that one limited sculpt I once wanted. Every doll has their own potention. It are BJD's, customisable dolls! I'll surely find something new that would suit the style I want. Maybe not tomorrow or next mont, but it'll surely apear somewhere, sometime ^-^

    12. Okay this has always been a dilemma for me!! If it's a limited sculpt and you REALLY REALLY can't live without it then go for the sculpt! Later that head may be unattainable at any price! However if all you have is a box of heads and you really dreamed of seeing a finished dressed doll standing in front of you then maybe its time to enjoy and work on what you have! If you decide on the sculpt and there is an available body at the time you might think about getting it as well as it is so hard to match color or hybridize later. Now if I could just follow my own advice.......LOL!!

    13. If you're dead set on a limited, I suggest going for the full package. Because, frankly, otherwise it's no longer the limited package but just a portion of it. But if it can't be any other doll, go for the head with the faceup. That's truly what makes a limited most special, in my opinion - otherwise you have a standard sculpt with a reasonable faceup, but nothing out of the ordinary. Usually there's nothing spectacularly different to a body aside from the fact that it originally came with the limited head. :)

    14. If money is tight it's a really simple process for me.

Can I afford the full doll without any extras or faceup. If yes I get the doll.
If I can only afford the head, or if I'm in a situation where I might need the difference in price between the head and body to pay off other things then I buy just the head.
That is, unless the doll comes in a really hard to find a body for color in which case I'd rather pass than be unable to find a body for them.

When I have trouble with money I will absolutely never spend money on anything extra (except maybe a basic pair of eyes if I don't have spares in their size). Faceups, clothes, shoes, pretty much everything can come later. I can make my own faceups, my own wigs, sew my own clothes and shoes even if they're not perfect so even if my dolls look a little less than absolutely amazing right out of the box that's alright given that they are limiteds and I'd probably never be able to own them if I pass up on them now.

    15. Money is ALWAYS tight for me LOL

I do my face ups unless I really really love the company's face up but I'll do as you say:

If money is tight, I can't do face ups and let's say I can't use layaway either (which is what I use for most of my purchases), I would get the doll without a face up because a face up is like $40-$60. I would rather spend like $20 on art supplies (I get a sealer from VolksUSA which is less than $10 and use the cheapest shipping, a small pack of watercolor pencils and 1 or 2 half-sticks of soft pastels for blushing from amazon because I get free shipping but you can always go to an art supplies store) then go to youtube or read the informative posts here on how to do face ups (actually, this is how I started doing face ups XD). It's so much cheaper and the supplies last for a long time so you can make 3-4 face ups more without spending more money and you get the satisfaction of doing it yourself.

I don't see the point in getting the doll without a face up and then sending the head away to an artist. It's like the same because let's say that the artist charges $30 for the face up (which is really cheap and hard to find such deals like that for good face ups) you still have to pay for shipping twice and paypal fees, it's even worse if the artist lives overseas.

If I'm super tight on money I would not get doll. As for getting the head only, like Soenatte said, it depends if the doll comes with a special skin color that it is hard to find from other companies. If that's the case, I would rather not buy anything but if the skin color is white or normal skin I might have a better chance at finding an hybrid so I would definitely get the head only.

As for wigs, I never get the default items from the companies. I always get the dolls without wigs, outfits and eyes unless they're given for free which has happened before and who knows where those items are because they are the first thing I remove from my dolls and leave them somewhere without a care in the world.

    16. It really depends on the situation of the dolls I have currently as well. I cannot bring myself to see a doll uncompleted so I always try to use my funds to complete the doll, (eg buy a body for the head, buy clothes/wigs/etc). Unless I really really really REALLY like a limited sculpt and cannot go on without it, then I will buy the limited sculpt first. So far this has not happened yet, but then again I haven't been in this hobby for very long

    17. I'm on team "money is always tight" because I pay for school 100% out of pocket...heck I've even gotten extra jobs just to pay for dolls because I don't compromise on what I want even if it means working my butt off xD....

Limited sculpt! I paid $150 for Souldoll Kyron head (with faceup because $50 for that detailed of a faceup you can't NOT get it) no regrets here tho I adore him to bits!

    18. It strongly depends on how limited the things are and how much I like them all! If the whole doll is limited and very unlikely to be re-released soon, I'd probably buy what I can (head + body + possible limited extra body parts)...
If the head is limited but the body is not, or the body's not my taste anyways I'd just try to get the head!
I don't buy dolls with faceups so that does not apply to me. Wigs and limited outfits are usually okay to miss out on too... at least in favor of the head - the head is definitely the most important because if need be, can always buy a different body later, but the head is what is always seen on the doll!

    19. Thank you so much for all of your reply and advises here! *bows* It's really helpful ^^ I didin't expect to receive these much replies ^^/
all Of your opinion really help me to make my choice ^^
actually it's the limited head with regular faceups (nothing special for the faceups) and I don't really like the body, since I own one of them and not really satisfied with it...and my money is enough to buy the head and body, the faceup is okay...but not into the character I had in mind...I guess I'll practice how to do my own faceups more then...I'll work hard for my dolls :'3 and thank you for replying and reading my questions here! \^^/

    20. I would get everything in one go, because I know myself enough to know that i'd go back and want the other things XD But if money was tight, i'd have a floating head with faceup!

You should see what you can do with faceups though! And post here as soon as you do C:
