1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

No "character" doll owners

Aug 25, 2011

    1. My dolls are not characters to me, they have names but only in the same way another toy in the house might and most of the time I dont use the name!

    2. I only have one doll. I named her Karma. She has many different characters. I have many different eyes, wigs, clothes. Each day I get up and ask Karma what she wants to be today. Today she is a brunette with bright blue eyes dress in a stunning gown that is the colors of autumn.

    3. I have a tendency to create characters for my dolls while I wait for them to arrive, but I find the characters too stiff and too limiting once they are here. Their backstory or 'personality' will inhibit my ability to be creative, because I don't have the right props or the right outfits (and sewing each outfit can take a while and then the inspiration is gone). I am attempting to abandon the characterizations. I'll just give them names and change anything else to suit my mood. Hopefully this will lead to more photoshoots and Gallery threads!

    4. Honestly, when I first got a BJD I didn't have a name, I also didn't plan to give her one or a back story. She was going to be just for photography purposes... after about two months I found myself slowly adding in things... and before I knew it i had LeAnn Sara Morgan haha ...
Now, I currently have a new BJD with no name or back story, I just call her by the factory given name. =3

    5. I'm somewhat new to the hobby, but I can't imagine my dolls without the character and stories behind them!*_*
But different boats for different folks :)

    6. I'm about to get my first doll soon, but I don't have a character in mind for her.  I do plan on giving her a personality, or style, or whatever- dress her up, play with her, make clothes, scenes, and do photoshoots with her, and all that... but as of yet, I don't really understand the character thing.  I imagine with proper play, she will develop into her own character :)

    7. Actually my dolls dont have characters when they arrive ( in the sense that I make them up, while I am waiting for them to be delivered).
But with the time they get characters as some of them travel with me or they become part of my daily (also professional life). So it´s becoming sort of a natural storyline! ;)

COncerning names: my dolls still have the companies´default names, as imo they have been chosen perfectly at least for the molds I own.

    8. When I first started collecting(6 years ago) I used to give names, storylines, personalities to all my dolls. In some ways it was good, as the character of the doll helped drive what kind of clothes, faceups, and wigs it would get. In the past year or two my interest in them has waned and I've given up on sticking to character, and just dress them in whatever I think looks good.

It makes it harder to pick a good name for new dolls though... without a set character, a fitting name is harder to settle on. My SD Ran who I got months ago, is still nameless. A few names keep bumping around, but I find myself calling her "My SD Ran" more often than not. :P

    9. I used to buy my dolls based on characters that already existed in my mind, but lately I've been seeing them as just dolls. They still have personalities and names, but rather than having an imaginary story which they have to fit into, they now exist just as these beautiful, solid things that I can hold and cuddle and enjoy. Their personalities come from the way in which I interact with them, and that makes me love them so much more than when I just made their personalities up.
      I hope that makes sense!

    10. My dolls came to me without preconceived characters... I bought them because I liked them. I have given them names, but try as I might, finding backstories is really difficult for me because I'm afraid of boxing myself in to a certain style or look. Yet at the same time I really want them to have characters... so.. it's.. uh.. a work in progress...

I think my dolls won't have complicated backstories... they might just be "this doll is a ____" some kind of occupation or fantastical element or some such... and that's it. Perhaps as though being that thing should explain everything.

Their personalities have just come from looks/moods they have because of their faceups or what I notice them expressing often...

It has been difficult both ways.
