OMG, Geordie's Pants MELTED....

Mar 27, 2016

    1. It was so hot under my bed this past year that Geordie's faux leather pants literally melted, I kid you not! I didn't even think about it. I'm well used to storing my doll stuff in plastic containers in baggies wherever it will fit. I had those pants in plastic storage box directly under my bed all Summer long, through Fall, Winter, didn't take them out again till just now, and yeah, like almost everywhere else on this planet lately it's been hot a lot, extremely so, even more so than what's normal for the Deep South.

The rest of the doll clothes in the box are fine, but that pair of pants is now HISTORY because the top part of the faux leather couldn't take the heat and cracked and literally fell off in bits and pieces. All that's left is kind of a thin foam base. The rest is just bits and pieces in the baggie. Oops!

Note to self, if one lives in a semi-tropical climate it is probably better not to store fake leather doll clothing under the bed where the AC can't reach very well! So much for finally dressing His Lordship. I had a plain white shirt I was going to use for now while I worked on making him his poet shirt. I had finally found him a vest too but it would seem he needs new "leather" pants. Or maybe I should make him some real leather pants, because I don't think that real leather pants would have died on us like this? Poor Geordie, he is never going to get dressed at this rate! FYI, it took me a year to find just the perfect pants. :P

    2. I don't do real leather, but I have had fake leather stuff that either gets too hot or just ages very poorly and either crumbles or gets really sticky and gross. Fake leather/pleather just doesn't last all that long.

Real leather holds up longer. My husband owns real leather motorcycle gear and even when left in the closet for years at a time, it's still in perfect shape. Something like spandex might also be an option. Some spandex has a bit of a leather look to it.

    3. Oh no! D:
I recently unpacked a pair of faux-leather boots that I bought in, oh, 2008 along with my very first doll-stuff order and they've gone to bits and are crumbling disgustingly :I They're just some silly generic ol boots, I'd be pretty sad if this happened to a specific item that I had tried hard to get (as has happened to some people's sexy Iplehouse catsuits et cetera --tragic!), but I guess it's unavoidable with this material.

    4. Had a pair of much beloved ten year old Customhouse boots come apart in my hands just recently, the fake leather had deteriorated into a flaky mess and what was left of the glue smelled terrible. It really is not something that lasts :horror:

    5. I live in a semi-tropical area as well (no AC though) and my DollZone Yuu-2's default outfit is made of fake leather and it's starting to show it's age pretty bad now :XD: While it hasn't melted it is starting to crack, his shoes are also starting to get flaky it's horrendous! That's to be expected though as both he and his outfit will be 7 years old this year. Time to finally get the old boy some new clothes. Even though I really like his default outfit :kitty2

    6. As weird as this sounds, putting your faux leather in a plastic bag and placing them in the fridge or freezer while not being worn should help keep them intact.

    7. It isnt just heat that deteriorates fake leather, it's the humidity. Vinyl pleather comes apart and degrades rapidly if exposed to humidity.

    8. I feel your pain. A few years ago I had a pair of eyes that were in a head, which was in a plastic bin, which was under my bed. It was temporary storage, but it got very hot out, and I think I hadn't bought a new air conditioner yet (a former roommate stole my window unit out of the garage), and when I pulled out the doll, it was fine, but the eyes completely warped. Lesson learned for me.

    9. a) holy crap

      b) off topic but I totally love your username :XD:

    10. a) That was pretty much my reaction, I believe they were urethane eyes and I will not make that mistake with eyes again.

      b) Thank you! :)

    11. I am going to keep that in mind in case the AC goes out. I live in South Texas. Yikes!

    12. Don't laugh but I have back up AC's. I have central air in the new place and it works okay but it's old and I don't want to take any chances of living without AC. I just can't handle it. I have autoimmune issues and it can make me very sick not being cool enough. A few years back the AC broke in our old place and I was sans air for a week. Three days in and Dad booked us into a hotel cats and all because it was up over 90 and I was having problems breathing and nearly fainting sans AC. So now my new new place I have central AC and I have two window units that I use sometimes when I just want to cool the bedroom or office maybe. If the central AC ever goes likely I will be getting another unit because me being without it just isn't negotiable, laugh.

    13. Pleather really seems to have a limited life-span... No matter how careful you are with the stuff, it seems like it always comes apart, or flakes, or gets sticky and weird at some point. It's just not a stable material. o_0

    14. I don't wear leather myself, but..particularly for dolls, I was wondering if I could propose an idea? There are such things as ethically sourced furs and leathers. Maybe we could keep an eye out and then let the others know if we find some so that they can get some too? I also think thrift stores might have bits and pieces of real leather that might be made into gear that holds up better than pleather.

    15. Repurposed leather from worn out human-sized gloves or jackets is another possibility, if it's light enough weight.

    16. There's also..fish leather. I know it sounds strange, but there you are. It's available on Etsy, and Ebay..made from fish skin after the fish are eaten. It can be dyed beautiful colors, and isn't expensive. It's quite light and thin.

    17. Thank goodness your doll was not wearing those pants! It could have been a dreadful mess.
