On Display or in their Boxes?

Feb 7, 2022

    1. I am sure this has been discussed before, but I am interested in hearing if you display your dolls or keep them in their boxes! I am a bit petrified of my dolls getting any sunlight, falling, or getting dusty. My current set-up consists of keeping the large dolls in acrylic cases in sitting or lying positions. The smaller dolls are kept in a curio cabinet with glass shelving. It took tons of effort, but some how I managed to cover the room's window entirely. The room has a huge window and a very large half-moon portion. A blackout curtain just didn't cut it, lol! When I am not in the room, I cover the display cases with white sheets. Needless to say, my family thinks I am nuts! But I am still annoyed by the small sliver of sunlight around the door frame that I cannot seem to hide. Hence the white sheet covers on the cases!

Sometimes I wonder if keeping them in their boxes is better for them long-term. Perhaps I am a bit too paranoid! :XD: Thoughts / opinions / advice? Is the box the way to go? Or on display with precautions? I want my babies to stay fresh for as long as possible!

    2. I have my dolls on display on a bookcase. The room they are in always has the blinds closed and also has a blackout curtain too. I like to be able to see my dolls and grab them easily for company. I think having them on display is alright as long as you have taken precautions. I understand why some folks keep them in boxes though.

    3. I don't see the point of having them if I have to keep them put away in boxes - Miney are all out all the time, in areas/rooms that don't get direct sunlight (we have adjustable louvred shutters on the livingroom windows so there's never any light dirctly on the dolls in there):

They get played with so don't sit long enough to gather dust, and if they did, it does them no harm and comes right off again.

Occasioanlly there's a domino effect when I'm getting one out of a cabinet where they're closely spaced (not enough room!!) but there's not much space for them to go far so it's more of a slump to the side than a fall and none of them have sustained damage from it (these dolls are a lot less fragile than a lot of people seem to think - they're resin, not china)

    4. I like having mine where I can see them and easy to get when I want to play. I don’t have pets though, and my kids know not to touch them without asking.

I think it all counts on why you have dolls and wether you have pets/kids and if u live in area prone to certain natural disasters on how one places them. They will yellow even in a box, so for me that not a factor.

    5. I really love to display my dolls! I'm cautious about keeping them in the part of the room where sunlight doesn't hit them directly, but other than that I accept that yellowing is inevitable.
Sometimes I do get a little overwhelmed when I have more than one doll in progress (faceup, sewing, restringing, etc).
When that happens or when I don't have much time for them, I like to only have one or two dolls out that don't require any work. :)

    6. I keep mine displayed on a shelf in a room where they don't get direct sunlight, but I don't worry about blackout curtains or things like that. My dolls are 15 years old and have a normal amount of yellowing. The way I see it, there's no way to prevent all yellowing, and I bought these dolls to enjoy them. So, I'm careful enough with them— no precarious posing or leaving them in direct light, but I want to be able to grab them without having to drag them out of a closet. Keep them safe, but don't let it impact your enjoyment.

    7. I keep all of my ladies on my bookshelf (that no longer has books... only dolls...) next to my bed. My windows are UV coated so I don't worry too much- they're all newer volks dolls so they shouldn't yellow horribly anyway. I like having them out so I can look at them, it's comforting to me.

    8. On display for sure if there's room anywhere. For me anything is better than having them in boxes, I never got around to doing things with them when they weren't on display full time. "Too much work" to dig them out and put back.

    9. My dolls are in their boxes for now, but I'm actively saving up money for a house of my own, and once I get that, proper display cases are second on my list of things to acquire, behind a proper crafting table.

I have active cats, if I try to display them without proper cases, they'll acquire broken fingers and tangled wigs.

    10. This is exactly how I feel. I'm a very hands-on collector and I want to be able to see them easily, play with them, admire them. Keeping them in a box or behind a curtain/cover would be so depressing to me, and annoying when I want them out. The only time I put a doll in a box and stored away is when I'm thinking about selling it and want to see if I miss it.

They're in a room with a south facing window with blinds and a curtain, but even if sunlight gets in the room, the dolls are positioned so it's not directly on them. I'm not that bothered by about minor natural yellowing. It's just the nature of resin, even stored in a box in the closet, dolls will yellow some over time. Dust isn't a concern either, as I dust my house at least once a month and handle the dolls too much for them to gather dust anyway. They're displayed sitting down, and my dog stays out of that room mostly and also doesn't bother things that aren't hers, so no worries on the falling or being knocked over.

    11. Mine are in their boxes at the moment, except one dude who's in the desk drawer :sweat
I moved last year and I'm still in the process of setting up. They're not out at the moment, because I would probably knock them over and cause some damage.
I do intend to have them on display once I'm finished though. I also live in a country prone to earthquakes, so I will probably go for a display cabinet rather than a bookshelf.

    12. They're going to yellow, stored in their boxes or not, so my dolls get to hang out where they can be seen. The room they're in does have a blackout curtain, which is a newish addition, but they've always been kept where windows are covered with blinds and/or curtains. But, I've also taken them outside, so they're no strangers to the sun lmao
For me, it's better to have them out where I can enjoy them whenever I want without having to get their box, then get them out of it, then possibly have to dress them (depending on box type). It's just so much easier when they're readily available. And, it makes me happy to see them out and about.

    13. They are all over my room where I can see and touch them whenever I want. Direct sunlight doesn't hit my room, because of trees, but I also don't worry about keeping the blinds closed. I don't see the point of having the dolls if I can't see them and pick them up or even just pat their heads whenever I want. I don't worry about them getting yellow, if they do they do. If they get dusty, I can dust them off. If the hair gets messy, I can brush it. I will also set them in trees and other crazy places to take a picture, so not exactly careful with them. They are surprisingly resilient. I haven't broken any yet. :XD:

    14. Exact same for me! My dolls are all out and I enjoy them so much! :D I can’t see and enjoy them in boxes. And i see it the same way, yellowing is kind of part/nature of resin. Nothing blushing or dyeing etc. can’t fix. :dance

    15. YESSS all this :D I love to have mine around too! Mine are in a quite bright room, but no direct sunlight. That’s all the precautions I take. :D

    16. Mine are always out on display where I can constantly enjoy them. They are part of the decor, placed in specially decorated vignettes wherever I have the room. With trees, awnings and tapestries, there is never any direct sunlight on them, and I greatly enjoy using them as art in my home. I am in this hobby to bring me joy, and that’s what seeing them constantly brings me. It’s like living in an enchanted world that I get to wander through every day.:)

    17. I think different companies dolls yellow differently. Box dolls mellow more then yellow from what I can tell. Mine are in a darkroom in a glass front covered display case. They are away from dust, but it's a draft free room so not much dust.

    18. I totally agree. I bought my dolls to actively play with by making clothes for them, taking photos, etc. Life's too short to keep them in the box.

    19. Displayed might not be quite the right word, since my dolls are mostly just sitting on whichever surface I last put them on until I play with them again. I try to be careful about sunlight and never leave them where direct light with hit them. Dust is less of a concern because everything gets dusty anyway.
I like seeing my dolls around. I like that far more than I could ever care about whether they've yellowed or not (my two oldest are about 10 years old and they're very yellowed and I honestly don't mind, they're still very beloved)
They only go in boxes if I need to clean/if I'm in a very terrible mood and tell myself I'm just going to sell everyone (which I never do XD) and then they come out again when the storm has passed.

    20. Because I don’t have a room for the hobby, I place my dolls in drawers, like beds witch the white cushions that usually came with them
