One expensive or few cheaper?

May 24, 2017

    1. I completely think that you should go with one doll that makes you really happy over a few dolls that make you feel meh. In my opinon, you'll always look at the other dolls and feel like something is missing. Sometimes quantity isn't the best option~

    2. Even if you only have one doll for a long time, keep in mind the level of customization possible with BJDs. You can play with multiple wigs and eyes on your dream doll, so variety shouldn't actually be that big of an issue. If you buy multiple little dolls and leave your dream doll behind, you're probably going to regret it.

    3. it'll get to the point where one might want multiple quality dolls. instance, 100 quality dolls, vs 1000 cheaper dolls.

    4. I think initially you need to think like you doll or not. The price and quantity is not as important.

    5. To be honest I too went with a cheaper doll. It was a spontaneous purchase and while she is beautiful I am now selling her to get the one I really truly want qwq. so I would say go with the one you really want!

    6. Oh I forgot to mention , the hobby is already really expensive so why not go all in! ( LOL ) // Reason why I have no monies Xp

    7. As a general rule, I would always choose one doll I love over multiple dolls I like. If the doll I really wanted was more expensive, I'd rather save to buy it if necessary, instead of settling for another, cheaper doll. Having said that, my preference towards dolls isn't influenced by their price or rarity and there are many 'cheap' BJDs that I would be happy to own.

    8. Honestly I usually am one for "spend more money if the one you truly truly want is up for sale" but I am also so picky. Sometimes I think I want a certain company, then I stumble back across my favorite (that I have three dolls from) and remember my dream dolls from them. For the price of some of the ones I was looking at recently, I could get two or three from that company. In completely different scales and colors.

I guess for me, it's also... I search for what matches some of my characters. Especially with boy dolls.. Only one company really has boys I'm still dreaming of owning whilst other companies I want them for a moment but still waffle like crazy. Then that company and suddenly.. There's my characters. I stop seeing the dolls and just see my characters in resin form.

    9. I think one more expensive doll is always better (if that's the dream doll) because if you buy 3 dolls you'd need to clothe all of them and it'd end up being more troublesome (and potentially less satisfying) than just buying the doll you prefer

    10. I could really care less about how much or how rare a doll may be. If I buy it, it is because I want it enough to work for it and to save. If it Is something I can't afford, I don't get it or I have to wait for something secondhand if the price is in a range I can afford. I would never just buy a doll just because it was a cheaper one just to have it, but if it was something I really did like and it happened to be a cheaper doll that's just a win win in my book!

    11. I agree with quite a lot of the people above; I think it's more important to be happy with the doll you're getting, rather than worrying about having lots of dolls. If it turns out that the doll you really want is on the cheaper end, and thus you can have more than if you were to buy more expensive dolls, then that's awesome! But otherwise; just worry about buying what you really love, instead of making compromises :3nodding:

    12. If money is an issue, Don't get the most expensive doll you like but find a less expensive one you like just as much. That way you would have money left over for clothes, wigs, eyes to outfit your doll. Whatever you decide make sure you get a doll you like and will be happy with.

    13. Tastes can change over time. Spending a huge amount on a doll sets you up to losing a huge amount possibly when you re sell it later... Having said that I was just looking at pictures of an artists bjds that sell for $3000.00 each. They are incredible. If I could afford one then maybe I would buy one. I think buying what you love in your budget is the safe way to collect. I was reading some posts in this thread and there is some great advice in them. Knowing what you want in the hobby is really important. Clothing, props and all add up too. And talented face up artists can make magic with a sculpt without breaking your bank.

    14. The price of individual dolls is rarely an issue with me (no, not made of money - just that they all are pricey). I HAVE chosen a cheaper doll over a more expensive one when BOTH fit the character I need to shell (just got an Impledoll Lydia in dark skin vs an Iplehouse Ashanti in ebony) but most of the time I'm picking a doll for the sculpt, not the price.

    15. I would Go with one expensive. I'd rather have The Perfect Doll than several I'm less attached to.

    16. If I were you I'd go with the more expensive doll. To me I'd feel like I settled for the cheaper dolls and may not be as happy. Also, you may regret it later especially if the expensive doll is a limited or the like.

    17. I wanted a really expensive doll for my first, but I decided against it. I would be able to pay for her sooner or later, afterall. I wanted a doll now! I settled on a much cheaper $110 doll, who will be coming in two months! But still... Every few days I look at the listing for that lovely doll. I recently also purchased another doll... oops... whom a friend sculpted and casted. I feel like I may never get that doll, haha!

    18. I faced that choice when I was buying my first doll. I was buying from Doll Chateau during their early summer event and for that you had to spend a certain amount to get the free event doll included. I had the choice of either buying a few smaller sculpts I really liked or buying one that was bigger that itself made it the price I had to hit to get the free doll. I deliberated it over for a while, but eventually I decided to get the one large doll (Snow Nymph) Because she's just absolutely gorgeous and honestly I don't think I'll ever regret the decision.

I think if you bought a few smaller ones instead of the one big one you *really* love, you will regret it and wish you had spent the money on the one you really wanted. I think if I had gone the other way and bought the 2 or 3 smaller dolls instead of Snow Nymph, I would be regretting my decision by now. If you have the money I'd say go for the one you want most of all ^_^

Also if you buy a lot of smaller dolls that you don't want as much instead of the ones you really want...I think that makes them less special and in the end you won't appreciate them as much and keep pining for the one you wanted more.

That's just my perspective though. C:

    19. Generally, I go for quality over quantity. But cheaper doll doesn't mean it's worse and expensive doll doesn't mean it'll work out either...on individual level, that is.

I wanted a Volks Miruku for the longest time and I bought her on MB for over $2000. I never managed to bond with her so I ended up selling her within that same year. And I've had a Bluefairy Sarang that I adored even though she was standard and not limited at all. You can say she was one of the cheaper dolls that I've had.

I wouldn't buy a doll just because the price point is cheap now that I'm in a stage of my life where I can afford most dolls that I want (but I'm not made of money! What I mean is I can afford them if I'm willing to make sacrifices like not shopping for myself for 2 months), perhaps back when I was still in high school I'd settle with cheaper dolls. But expensive dolls doesn't mean that they're better for me and I can love cheaper dolls as much if I really like it.

    20. Definitely one expensive because it will bring more joy to you than all the cheaper ones combined :)
