1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Only young and thin dolls

Dec 4, 2011

    1. If you leave the realm of ABJDs, then there is plenty of variety in the doll world at large! Particularly in OOAK artist dolls. But old and fat isn't the aesthetic of ABJDs... and personally I don't have a problem with that. ABJDs are a tiny niche of the doll hobby at large, I think people on this board forget that...!! The artists/companies who pioneered this genre are welcome to continue with their own ideals of beauty, they don't need to create dolls for what a tiny minority of Western consumers think is 'realistic'.

As a side note, I've spent most of this year losing weight, and I tell you, I wouldn't wish my pre-weightloss body on anyone, doll or otherwise! I don't see why people have to get all up in our faces about fat being 'realistic' or a 'healthy body image' cos... well it's actually no more realistic or healthy than being super thin.

    2. Indeed! I wish I had the guts to perform this kind of modification!

    3. As other people have mentioned, it's not entirely true anymore that all abjds are completely young and thin. This remains mostly true, but there are some great exceptions.

Since nobody's mentioned it yet, there's the wonderfully curvy Sharmistha body (the head is off-topic).

And I've also been following that Zaoll mod with awe and joy.

That said, the prevalent youth and thinness kind of irritated me back when I first started to take an interest in bjds. I've come to accept that a lot of collectors want dolls that fit popular notions of ideal beauty, and even when companies do something different, those dolls seem to not have as many buyers.

    4. Yes. This!

    5. Thank you for the links Anneke and somnifer! I didn't knew Locke or the Sharmistha body. Both are very intresting! I didn't like Sharmistha head though, but it's off topic here.

    6. I think the general look of ABJDs is generally related to things like anime and the 'perfect' human form; i don't see anything wrong with this, because I suppose that's why I'm here, because I love how perfect they look.
If companies started to produce more 'real' imagery of dolls, I wouldn't want to purchase it, personally; I like the look of perfection. And whereas in humans, perfection is measured by personality and preference (or so we'd like to think), I don't think it should apply to ABJD, seeing as their personality is created by us; and is therefore in only the owner's perception. :P
