Open eyed vs closed eyed dolls vs in-between

Apr 27, 2021

    1. I vibe with open and semi open! Closed definitely depends on the character I want to portray. Y 'now how some characters always have their eyes closed, something like that. All in all, I prefer open and semi.

    2. I don't like semi-open. Either fully open where I can see the beautiful glass eyes or fully closed with expressive face. I've had plenty of sleeping dolls in my life and I wish non-BJD dolls were more popular as sleepy. (I even repainted one of my Barbies into a sleeping doll and she's been my favourite since!)

    3. I LOVE dreaming eyes, to the point that I modded my Volks Williams to have them as well.

Some open-eyed dolls have this strange 'dear-in-the-headlight'-expression :abambi: when you look at them from a certain angle. It made me believe that dreaming eyes are more expressive.

    4. I've always really love semi-closed/"romantic" head sculpts and I would love to add some to my collection someday, but most of the sculpts I actually commit to purchasing are open-eyed! I think it's because semi-closed are more likely to have issues with gapping in the eye wells because of the typical dome size of eyes, which bothers me to no end.

I dislike sleeping/closed eye head sculpts for myself, though I often like them in others' collections. I just can't justify spending another $50+ on a head that I'll basically never use.

    5. I definitely prefer open eyed heads, many of my dolls are like that but the romantic heads I have I deeply love so I think it depends on the character.

    6. I don't like closed eyed dolls because I feel they're too restrictive.

There are only so many situations where a person would have their eyes completely closed and I'd soon get fed up of my doll being permanently asleep or "contmplative"... I'm fine with a sleeping faceplate that I can brieflychange out with a regular/open-eyed faceplate for occasonal asleep pictures or something (switching faceplates - sometimes - happens in my world, the faff of switching heads means that just doesn't happen).

I just had a friend mod the eyes open on a closed-eyed head (I picked it up beacuse it's from a favourite company that disappeared years ago). It was pointless keping it boxed up and unpainted because I had no use for a sleeping head, so it might as well be modded into a head I can use.

And, I don't like part-closed eyes because (to me) they make the facial-expression look mean and calculating, no matter how their faceup is done. And that's just not the sort of character that appeals to me. One "snarky older-sister" in a collection of over fifty BJD is as mean and calculating as it gets around here, and even she has fully opne eyes and isn't snarky all the time.

    7. I love half closed/swd/romantic/etc eyes but every doll I’ve ever bought with them never worked out so I’ve unofficially banned myself from getting one again and stick with open eye dolls.
Not a fan of completely closed/sleeping eyes. I feel like it takes out too much of the fun of customizing the doll and is actually a little unnerving to me in some cases.

    8. All of my dolls have open eyes, and I like them because then I can experiment with different eye colors and styles. However, I do think some sleep faceplate dolls are beautiful, and I wouldn't be opposed to owning one. Not sure if I like half-closed eyes, though.

    9. I like semi-open best! I think it gives a cool look to a lot of expressions. Open is nice too, but depends mostly on the shape of the eyes for me. Closed eyes are probably my least favorite generally, but I could see them working for certain characters.

    10. I especially love the vocabulary a lot of doll makers use to differentiate eye versions, romantic for semi-open, dreaming for sleeping sculpts... it's so special! As for my tastes, I definitely love all 3 ^^ I love dreaming sculpts but as many mentioned it takes away the beauty of having a gorgeous resin or glass eye peaking through, and giving more expression to the doll. As for romantic, I appreciate how beautifully other collectors display them, but probably wouldn't add any to my personal collection. But all 3 styles are to die for!

    11. I prefer open or half open eyes. Sleeping faces don't bond with me for whatever reason.

    12. I definitely prefer open. Open is more versatile in my opinion. Posing them in certain ways can make them look half open.

    13. I very much dislike closed-eye dolls. my personal preference.
I wouldn't mind if an additional head came with open eyes or vice versa.

    14. I very much prefer open-eyed dolls. I like my dolls to look awake, because I love to see their sparkly eyes. :D I still enjoy seeing other people's closed-eye dolls, though!

    15. I like classic Dollshe dolls with slightly opened eyes, for example...

    16. I normally prefer open-eye dolls, but with certain sculpts and eye positions the romantic look can be really cute, like 2D Doll Tai.

A sleeping head might be fun to have as a novelty, but I haven't seen any that have really made me fall in love yet. If it was a really expressive sculpt, I'd definitely consider it. I tend to prefer sculpts more the more expressive they are.

    17. It all depends on the sculpt. Some sculpts really look best with the open eye version. However most of the time I prefer the romantic head because of my preference for smaller eyes. To be honest, picking suitable eyes for romantic head could be tricky, but it is a burden I am willing to bear with. As for sleeping heads, I doubt I can take good photos out of them so I don't even try to get one.

    18. Most of my dolls have open eyes, but I'm drawn to the romantic/dreamy/half-open ones. I especially love the eyes of my Dream Valley Rosa. They're open enough to be visible and contribute to her imperious expression. I don't usually have much interest in owning closed eyed dolls. However, one of my Real Puki has a sleeping face-plate that I think gives her an alternate expression.

    19. I personally love a sleepy head. It makes it feel like a doll is just sleeping and would otherwise come to life. To be honest, my favorite thing would be to just have alt sleepy and awake heads for all my dolls lol

    20. Half closed is very pretty, but as an option it's a 'nice but don't need' when I have the default open eyed version. I have to work on my existing doll more so it's not a priority to have that. I enjoy seeing people's dreaming dolls though!
