Other people handling your dolls

Jul 13, 2005

    1. Aha, beyond the common sense measures I'm not at all careful with mine. ^^; I had to re-blush the underside Kika's chin when I got back from Japan upon realizing that several of the layers of MSC had worn off, as that's how I always position his head. ^^;

But I always thought it would be obvious not to touch another doll's faceup. But I suppose people not very familiar with the hobby might not know better....

    2. I don't have my doll yet so I don't know, but I thought once you sprayed the faceup the paint was pretty secure. I can see ruining it by rubbing, but does it come off that easily?
      That's scary!

    3. it doesnt come off very easy, but touching the face a whole lot can gradually wear it off, and if someone was to slip, and say run their fingernail accidentally across the dolls face, that would probably leave a mark (one girl had dark fingernail polish and accidently damaged her own dolls faceup one time!)

since the faceup is the most precious part of a doll (the hardest to fix, replace) I just think it's a good idea not to touch it if you can.

    4. *coughs* I'm the same exact way >,> *was just holding Shin by his nose* Ehehe...

    5. xD I'm not careful either. I like changing Audrey's faceups a lot so they get wiped faster than they get damaged. The irreplacable part of my dolls to me is their sculpt, not the paint. Kind of like how our own makeup isn't the irreplacable part, our face itself is.

    6. I found that I'm having a really hard time readjusting on how I move their heads. My first BJD I painted myself, so I was not worried about the makeup too much. He also doesn't have much blushing on his cheeks or chin so I never got to see the effects, and didnt realize that it does wear out the MSC if you constantly grab the head that way to move it.

My second boy was painted by an artist and he has a lot of blushing all over his face. I worry about his makeup a lot as it is absolutely perfect for his character-- but every time I want to move his head I, without thinking, grab his chin or sides of his face. Ack! I've had my 1st boy for so long that it's taking me forever to readjust to moving their head by their ears.

    7. I'm pretty much okay with people holding and playing with my dolls as long as they are somewhat careful but I don't like people touching they're face. Both because I'm worried their face-up will somehow get messed up and that their face would get dirty just because someone hasn't washed they're hands.

So usually I just ask people to please not touch their face if they reach for it, I don't even touch their face myself outside of doing they're face-up's.

    8. If I don't trust them to handle the doll...I don't give them an opportunity to touch them. Three of us went to a doll fair this past weekend...None of them had ever seen a Volks doll before. All three of us kept our boys clutched closely to our breasts and this pretty much conveyed the message that we weren't willing to hand them over for any reason.

    9. Yeahhhhhh I let people touch.... but not the head. @_@;;; Dolis current faceup cost me $90 including shipping and all... if they ruin it... 1) theyre payin me $90, 2) theyre convincing the artist to redo it. -.-;;; Im only so crazy about him though... Sandia... I get irked if people touch her face... but not as much since its only a stock faceup and I plan on getting it changed sometime soon...

    10. when i move my dolls head, i touch her wig, not her face.

i would be very upset if her faceup was ruined, because even though we have some talented artists here in the usa, i don't know if they could do the face up as well as a bjd company employee.

if i ever do touch another person's doll, i don't think i will touch any skin, just their clothes.

if someone else did hurt your doll's face up, what would you do? would you ask them to pay for a new one?

    11. Not if it were a simple accident. I would be upset, but these things happen. If it were a friend, I would expect them to buy me ice cream or make some token gesture of sympathy, but I wouldn't be on the warpath to get my money back. Friendship is more important than resin, always.

If I specifically asked someone (say, at a meet-up or whatever) not to touch my doll's face and they deliberately did, and damaged it due to willful mishandling... yes, I would expect repayment for any damage done and unleash my wrath without hesitation. I would go to court if need be.

    12. make them all sign contracts...brief them on touching..make them sign a document... they smear it... they pay whatever costs it takes to get them replaced.

I would only ever bring two dolls to a meet... or even to play with..one for my boy to hold (like he would) and one for myself... anyone interested or wanting to touch can go touch someone else's ...

i hate it when i warn people about things..and they do it anyway.
I kept books in pristine condition and someone needed to borrow it...so i lent it to them and told them how NOT to hold the book..and how to turn the pages so they wouldn't crease..and freaking hell the girl flicked through and held it so tight there are dents and nail marks everywhere :|

It always makes me want to do something about it..so i have... people who naturally sweat a lot... i won't let them touch... anyone with no experience of dolls.. i won't let them touch... if you want to touch one...learn about them...stare for now... if you want to pose them... learn from how "i" do it (or tell them that anyway)

    13. I'm not too worried about it. Most of my dolls don't have 'special' or 'irreplaceable' faceups. Mind you, if anything happened to Lukas's eyebrows, Ephram's lips or Lutz's inexplicably translucent face skin(Waaaaay too much MSC?), I'd be pretty upset, but for the most part...? Nah. My dolls are working dolls, lol. I schelp them around in public, sit them on cars, grab their hands and arms and generally just use them. I do position the heads by the ears, but I'm not like... Paranoid about it. And if someone else wants to touch them, I just let them touch a specific spot I point out to them.

      (As proof of how laid-back I am, Lukas is BW and not coated, and I STILL drag him around... XD;;;

    14. If it was really just an accident then no I wouldn't, besides I do my dolls face-up's. So while I would be upset (unless I was planing on redoing it anyways), I'd just redo it or fix it

    15. it's not just faces though...

awhile back, I was inspecting my friends OOAK Isao, and tucked my fingers into the back of his undies to pull them back up (hehe, I was looking at his TATTOO!!! really!!!) and my fingernail polish (week old manicure) rubbed off on his butt!!!!!!!!!! I about died right there on the spot. Luckily quick action with a mr. clean sponge saved the day, but these dolls require more care than most realize. I've had Luci's lips chip already, and I wasn't "doing" anything to her!

    16. I always touch Kel's chin and rub off the coating there... Doesn't bother me any since I re-do Kel's face-up every couple of months...
But I'm not gonna touch another person's doll's face, even the chin, cause not everyone does face-ups.

    17. If it's my doll I'm not careful at all because I did his faceup. That's part of the reason why I did it myself. Anyway I haven't yet done a faceup I'm 100% satisfied with, so if the current one gets damaged it'll just be an excuse to do a new one incorporating the changes I want. As long as nothing happens to his resin, I don't care. :daisy

But when it's someone else's doll I'm SO worried! When I took pictures of Ichigo I was so confounded, because some of his wig hairs fell over his face and I was afraid to move them out of the way. I really didn't know what to do. Finally I wailed for Dezarii to come fix his hair herself. (LOL)

    18. I adore my LE's faceups, and the FIRST thing I warn people who even get close to my dolls is "don't touch the face!!" I turn their heads by grasping on the sides just behind the ears as much as possible, and while I don't use white cotton gloves to handle them, I wash my hands befopre handling, and make sure that when dressing them the cloth does not scrape over their faces.

I have also given their faceups extra coats of MSC, because I never trust they come with a sufficient coverage. (Isao #1's faceup was particularly badly coated by Volks (apparently this is a known problem with the Isao 1's) - I actually had to retouch him a bit along where his wig cap hit the forehead.)

    19. **grins** I know what you mean Aimee. I HATE it when other people touch my dolls' faces. It makes me twitch....but then...I'm...er...kinda naturally territorial and possessive.

You know what else REALLY irks me? I hate it when people muss their wigs. :| It annoys the hell out of me. I like to keep their wigs nice and smooth, and when someone else poses them and then walks away and their hair is ALL over the place (and I'm not talking about when a wig slips off - that happens, oh well, big deal, laugh and straighten it and you're done, yay). I REALLY get annoyed when people don't fix their hair after playing with them.

And it pisses Darryl off when people put him in intimate positions with female dolls. However...Talon will hit on anything with...er...resin, so he's fine.

    20. I think it's a good idea to coat a doll's faceup periodically, so I recoat once a month. Even still, I move his head by placing my thumb gently under his chin, and my finder on top of his head where the wig is, or by putting a finger and thumb and moving by his ears, but my hand curls behind the face, not in front of. It's just a little something you can do to prevent a big something. I HATE sending my dolls anywhere, so faceups are hell for me. I don't want to do anything to hurt them.

This is coming from someone who's dolls all see a lot of love/carrying around/posing and stuff. (^_^) But, if faceups need replaced, I don't think I'd flip out. Maybe if I paid an extra 800 on an auction customized by a famous artist, but then I'll simply be extra careful.
