1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Ouchie! BJD collecting is a dangerous hobby

Aug 9, 2005

    1. *dies laughing*OMG!!
      I am in tears, you guys are so funny!!!

    2. I have restrung all of my dolls a lot of times, but two of them are not perfectly strung yet.
      I have to try doing it again in autumn, since summer is the worst season for restringing... Sweaty hands can't hold the elastic string firmly at all, and that means only one thing: blisters! >_<;;;
      I remember that the first times I tried restringing a doll I had bad blisters and bruises on several fingers: now it doesn't happen anymore :daisy
      I generally use cotton shoe-strings and thick nylon thread to help me get the elstic strings through the holes in the resin.
      Then, before changing my dolls' eyes, I always sand the jagged edges of the stems until they become harmless :daisy

    3. Ha! My first doll-realted injury happened before I got anywhere near restringing -- before I even saw CM for the first time!

      His box arrived and the excitement was brought to an abupt stop when I realized I first had to get the tape off the box. So, I grabbed a pair of scizzors and used those. Unfortunetly, in the process of trying to open the box, I made four neat cuts right across my fingers. I didn't realize it until I picked him up and realized he had some strange orange-red spots on him -- my blood!
      (Creepy :oops: )

      Restringing him was surprisingly easy for me, I did it by myself. Although I did end up having to use both my hands and both my feet in the process XD

    4. Ouch! XD;; That sounds painful...but it's also quite funny, in retrospect. ^_^;;

      I was so eager to get Shiina out of the cardboard that I merrily slashed his outer box...and only realised after that I had slashed his picture on the actual doll box, too. o_o;;

    5. My first girl has had stringing issues from day one. And on around day one, I tried to untie her elastic ... and wound up ripping half of my thumbnail partially off. :/ I had to keep it bandaged until it grew out enough to cut, which took about a month. Shortly after this incident ... I went out and bought a stringing tool. I've pinched and strained now, but nothing nearly as bad as that one--I finally had to cut the elastic, by the way. It was just too damn knotted.

      Her strings are so tight now that I have to hold her body down with my feet and the tool with both hands to pull the S-hook to the proper position to de-head her and re-head her. Offers a little bit of ... "burn" on the fingers and hands. I did that twice before I decided that she doesn't wear her tee shirt again until I buy her some new string!

    6. When we restrung Oboro's dana boy for the first time, he needed help getting his last foot back on. As I struggled with it (The elastic was really tight and I just couldn't maneuver it into the hook), his foot slipped and left a big gash underneath my thumbnail *_* That was my first sign that he didn't like me :oops: But I think we get along much better now.

    7. when restringing neil with a knitting stitch holder (ingenius for restringing) i hooked it through my thumb...this wasnt the worst point...i got up in the night and my thumb had swollen up so much that the nail had pierced into the skin at the side and where the hook had pierced me it was full of pus! i think this could serve as a warning not to let the broken skin come into contact with the resin...by the way its fine now i didnt have to have it amputated or anything.

    8. Glass eyes have stems? =0 I'm pretty sure that Ciel came with glass eyes (or maybe I'm wrong...) but I have no idea why there would be stems on them...

    9. some do, some don't..of the three pairs of glass eyes I have, two don't have stems(Luts and Volks) and one pair does(Customhouse)..so I guess it just depends on the makers..

    10. Ach!

      Restringing shouldn't be difficult, dangerous or painful... Restringing tool! And a pair of forceps if you're in the mood. They're a couple of dollars each and they're a godsend. These days I can have Bertie (My Elf Yder Mod) apart and back together again within fifteen minutes if I'm really hurrying - think of it like rifle drill ^.^

      ... Now I have this weird vision of an army of BJD enthusiasts with a drill sargeant barking at them - "Get those s-hooks on, pronto!"

    11. I was trying to restring Ruby Lydia the other day and i was using a peice of wire taken from a spiral notebook to pull the string through. Something slipped and the wire went through the pad of my finger for about a quarter of an inch long, in one side and out the other. (parallel to my finger, not perpendicular otherwise it would have sucked way more) eeks. after that i had my roommate help me.
      i need to get a restringing tool. makeshift home tools are dangerous.

    12. Yikes. The first time I tried to pull the string through a leg I used thin wire and wrapping it around my hand caused amazing pain (I have eczema pretty bad, I thought the wire would flay me!) So from then on I always use a thin wire or stiff ribbon to loop through the end of the elastic and push it through all pieces of leg or arm I need and then use needle-nose pliers to pull the elastic through. I'm not into winding or pinching anything anymore! I secure the elastic at the tip of the limb with a chopstick or pen and use the pliers to maneuver the s-hook on and voila, done in twenty minutes. :)

      It shouldn't hurt to care for your doll! ; )

    13. I've yet to restring my mini fee, but I did once get a nice big slice cut out of my thumb when I was customizing another doll with an exacto knife. T__T Call me Mz. Graceful!

    14. One day I was restringing one of my dolls and I was pulling the string and I forgot how but I look down and the neck had cut my finger open! My biggest concern wasnt me, it was my boy XD; I checked him over twice to make sure I didnt bleed on him then ran off to bandage my finger - _ -;;;

    15. I haven't restrung yet, and I'm not tempted judging by some of the stories I've read, hahaha!

    16. My Dad actually has the metal hooks that can fit in the channels. Use to use them where he worked. So now I borrow them when I need too. Makes it easy. But I get pinched! But takes me maybe 10 minutes max. But getting my AR Jade's arms were a pain...I ended up stretching the elastic a bit, it was too tight.

    17. Yeah, for someone resurrecting my old thread!

      Anyways restrung Kai's arms again to get the right tension a couple weeks ago and gave myself a big blister and pulled one of my thumbnails back until it bleed. Didn't notice till I saw the red marks on the elastic...

      Yes, my DNA is part of him now... ironically suitable since he's my "firstborn".

    18. Since my last post I've gotten absolutely utterly jaded on stringing and blink in confusion at anyone who has trouble with it or claims fear. It's just... Not even difficult, outside of finding the right tension. o.O I can have the doll in pieces in a couple of minutes and putting it back together takes maybe a few more. XD

      Now you want "O_O", watch the guys Volks had at the LA tea party and at the LA Sumika to adjust dolls... XD They just pulled Lukas' string up out of his body still assembled, re-tied it and cut the excess. XD Lukas was really, REALLY loose though.

      ...Reminds me, this Arashi is making me want to smack him. *starts timing*

      ...OK, nevermind, he was so loose I just took his head off, pulled his torso apart because the knot is there and tied him a few inches tighter without even bothering with grabbing some wire. X_x; Now that's loose. @_x Did the same with his arms. He's falling over much less now. >3

    20. restringing ain't that bad.. for me at least. Granted, I got pinched a number of times, got slight wire burn which didn't last longer than an hour. Perhaps it didn't hurt me much as I got thicker skin on my hands from playing on the monkey bar as a kid XD
      I kinda enjoy restringing now D: (maybe this pyscho factor came as I began doing restringing the 2nd time I saw any doll in person)

      I have no problem restringing large dolls alone now with the good old primitive wire from the hardware shop. Though I would say that it'll be smarter to wrap your pulling hand in towel to protect it from potential cuts.

      I think one of my worst injury was Fraud nose-butting me so hard and sudden on my collar bone i got a bruise. It was amazingly painful o__o"
      Cian is generally gentle, Eithne did gave me a bad pinch while stripping her to be unstrung couple of days back. =\
