"Over Popular" Sculpts & Originality

Apr 22, 2014

    1. Would you buy a doll that is a very popular sculpt and would it bother you that a lot of people had the same doll as you?

I already have. It doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I think that popular sculpts can bring people together because they have a mutual admiration for the same dolls.

Do you feel that making your dolls look original and different is really important to you? and does anyone else not care about other people's opinions of your dolls?

Well, I wouldn't want to copy someone else's doll out of respect for their creative work, and it is important to me that I personalize my own dolls. However, I've purchased fullsets and default faceups, which aren't original at all. I think the most important thing is to like one's dolls, whether they are super popular doll, or a one of a kind.

    2. Would you buy a doll that is a very popular sculpt and would it b, but thereother you that a lot of people had the same doll as you?

I'm not a fan of Fairyland and I don't like most of their sculpts, but there are a number of "popular" dolls that I do like. I might buy one if I liked it enough. It wouldn't matter to me if a lot of other people also have it. I don't buy dolls based on their popularity (or unpopularity). I buy them because of many personal reasons, including aesthetics, poseability, size, and how well the doll will suit the character he/she represents. I'm not bothered all that much by people's opinions or preferences. My own preferences are what's important to me in this hobby. I think that if you really love MNF Chloe and she's the doll you want, you shoould get her regardless of whether there are dozens of them already out there. If she makes you happy, that's what is important.

Do you feel that making your dolls look original and different is really important to you? and does anyone else not care about other people's opinions of your dolls?
Yes, making my dolls look unique is important to me. I think my dolls, as representations of my original characters, should relfect the character's uniqueness. I value individual expression. Besides, no two dolls are going to be exactly alike, even if they happen to have the same eye and hair colour and are painted by the same artist. There's always going to be something that makes them different. It really isn't all that difficult to make two dolls of the same sculpt look different from each other. Sometimes all it takes is a wig or eye change. ;)
As for other people's opinions, I don't really care what others think of my dolls. I mean, I'm happy when other people say they like my dolls, and I'm sad when people say they don't, but in the long run I'm still going to love my dolls no matter what other people think of them. Yes, I love to share photos and stories of my dolls, but my dolls are primarily for me. They make me happy, and that's what matters most to me.

    3. I have a MNF Chloe and I love her. I made her my own and I think you should do the same. Just because a doll is popular shouldn't stop you from buying her. I love seeing pictures of Chloe.

    4. Funny, when I first saw the Chloe sculpt, i was releived that it wasnt Yet anorther Lishe.... when i just started in this hobby 8/10 pics that where posted where Lishes.

Would you buy a doll that is a very popular sculpt and would it bother you that a lot of people had the same doll as you?
Like others above, I could not care less. My dolls are meant for me. I seldom make pics.

Do you feel that making your dolls look original and different is really important to you? and does anyone else not care about other people's opinions of your dolls?
Working with my dolls in a way is important, cause it helps me bond with the doll...but i dont care if the outcome makes it look wildly original or not

    5. I have to ask, OP... Are you buying this doll for *yourself* or are you buying it to try to impress "the community"?

If it's the later, don't bother. That's a bad idea and you won't be happy with the results.

If it's the former, then why the devil do you care how common the sculpt is or what the "dolly hipsters" think of it? If YOU like the Chole, then that's all there is to it. It's your money, it's your collection, and you get to call the shots. Buy what you love, and to hell with what the Peanut Gallery thinks.

    6. For me personally, I wouldn't care how popular or unpopular a sculpt I like is. At the end of the day, I'm going to be paying a lot of money so whether a lot of people have the same one or not, I don't care as long as he or she is one that I personally want because I'm am going to be keeping him or her. :)

    7. I love unique dolls, but if the mold I fell in love with was popular, it wouldn't matter to me. The hair, eyes, make up, clothing and character can make any mold different from others. Though it might be easy for me to say, since I haven't yet seen pictures of the molds I have from other. (Maybe I haven't been searching well enough?) :sweat

    8. Absolutely agree with everything here

    9. I couldn't care less how common or popular a doll is, it all comes down to how much I like them. My msd boy is a Fantasy Doll Mathan elf, and I haven't seen owner pics of another. But on my wish list is a minifee, either Celine, Mirwen, or Chloe. They might be common, but not in my house! Yes, I will try to make her my own by commissioning a unique face-up and playing with styling, but if someone also gets the same sculpt and styles her like mine, I guess I'd just have to compliment them on their good taste! :D

    10. I not only own a bunch of 'overly popular' sculpts, but all my dolls have their default company face-ups! Although, to be fair, I do tend to tweak the face-ups to better match my characters. But generally, originality to me involves my characters, not their shells. You could put my Cuprit next to any other Cuprit, and to me, even if they had identical face-ups mine (and the other person's!) would still be 'original'. My Cuprit's originality lies in her wig (colour, style and accessories), her eyes (handmade by me), her outfit (style, colours, materials) and accessories (mostly handmade by me), and her story (which is long, detailed and original).

I don't really share many photos of my dolls, so I never feel the complaints about 'overly common dolls' really apply to me. If anything, I feel more (positive) pressure to post pictures of the rarer dolls I own than (negative) pressure NOT to post pictures of the more common dolls I own :)

    11. chloe is a sweety and i flirted with the idea of getting her, as i'm sure many of us did (because she is so cute and there are lots of great owner pics) but i have noticed i did get ...bored isnt the word (cause its a bit rude) but i didnt feel an urge to own her. However there is no need for anyone to be rude about it, if you dont want to see a doll, don't look at the gallery threads with them in!

as for the Saint situation, i didn't like him at all, but the fact he is so popular means there are so many awesome owner pics and it is becoming more and more difficult to resist that beautiful face! :fangirl:

For me it's like certain foods i dislike, i force myself to try them every now and then and sometimes i like it!

    12. For me, personally, I wouldn't want a doll that was as popular as a Chloe because I want to pretend that mine is the only one. I can't help but compare my doll to owner pictures of the same sculpt, and even though it's definitely not a contest, it's not really a good feeling. And it kind of pulls me out of the idea that my doll IS my character. I wouldn't want to be bombarded with reminders otherwise every time I clicked a gallery link. Of course, if I'm totally in love with a doll, popularity doesn't matter a bit. I think that's probably true for all of us.

    13. Would you buy a doll that is a very popular sculpt and would it bother you that a lot of people had the same doll as you?

Yes I do own a very popular sculpt and that's my Soom Dia boy Indy. I really don't care how many people have the same sculpt though as I wanted him with a specific character in mind that his face was perfect for. All the Dia's I have seen look different, even those with a company face-up. There are always variations and then add eyes, wigs, cloths etc and they look quite different. My boy has a custom face-up and eyes and I don't think he looks like any other Dia I have seen, he just looks like Indy:)

Do you feel that making your dolls look original and different is really important to you? and does anyone else not care about other people's opinions of your dolls?

I don't worry so much about trying to make mine different I'm more concerned with them looking how I want them to look. Sure it is great when other people like your doll but it is not why I have them. My dolls are for me and are an expression of myself. If someone does not like one of my dolls why would it bother me? We all have different tastes in many things and that's why there is variety. I say go with what you like and enjoy your beautiful Chloe. There are always going to be people who like to criticize others and that is a fault with them and not you.

    14. Got two popular sculpts, Bei and Song.

I don't really care if my girl's a dime a dozen out of RS Bei's or if Avalon's an RS Song, they're my babies, I don't pick a sculpt based on popularity, it' what I love. I fell in love with their sculpts and in Avalon's case...HIM, HE jumped out at me that day last year and I couldn't be happier.

    15. To be honest, I'm one of those who get easily bored by seeing the same sculpt over and over, especially when it's company face up and they all have the same style. But I think it all comes down to what purpose one has to join the hobby or even collect dolls. I think all have dolls for their own sake, but from that, it can vary. Some collect them, meaning they want the fullset and the company face up. Some have their dolls on their shelf, being happy just looking at them. Some have their dolls as babies or pets. Some have their dolls as a way to express their creativity. Each to their own, really.

For me, as I'm not collecting dolls in the sense that they "just sit and be beautiful", but as someone that likes to make stuff for them and wanting them to be very personal - I do, as said, get tired of the multitude of sculpts that explodes and then pops up exactly everywhere. Not only MNF Chloe, but also Dollshe Saint and Soom Dia are two sculpts that just keeps multiplying all the time. And I love the sculpts, they're all really pretty! Personally, if I were ever to get either one of the sculpts, I would get them blank and I would see it as a challenge to make them something real original, to really make them pop. To make them stand out. For, to me much of my hobby is taking photos of my dolls and showing them to others, thus, having a doll that looks like ten others won't make the picture anything special. At least not for me. For that is _my_ interest. And as stated, we're all in this hobby for different reasons and different interests!

However, this is a real broad hobby, people having all their own reasons for getting their own dolls, dressing them up in their own way - and in the end it all comes down to what matters to oneself. If you want to have a popular sculpt because you think you'll love it to bits and pieces, and you won't mind if people think it as mainstream or whatnot, why shouldn't you get it? But I also think it's important not to get a popular sculpt, and then be sad or mad or irritated over people perhaps complaining - as it is a stated fact that there are issues. There were issues even before you got your popular doll, and you bought it knowingly so. In lack of a better comparison, but it would be like buying an apartment near a railway, knowing there will be trains on that railway, and then get all mad or sad or irritated when the trains run on that railway.

But lastly, there are also advantages with getting a popular sculpt - a sculpt doesn't get popular for nothing and you'll probably end up with having lots of fans of that sculpt commenting or complimenting your doll either way ;)

(Also, I didn't know RS Song was considered popular xD In that case I have one popular sculpt, yaaaay~)

    16. Would you buy a doll that is a very popular sculpt and would it bother you that a lot of people had the same doll as you?
I was very pissed at myself, when I found out I liked Fairyland Little Ante so much to the point of wanting her. I didn't want to want an Ante, because "everyone" already owns one. In the end, she won though. I now have an Ante elf and I can't bring myself to sell her. She is popular for a reason, she is just a lovely sculpt.

Do you feel that making your dolls look original and different is really important to you? and does anyone else not care about other people's opinions of your dolls?
Depends... If I really love the "overdone" look, I will go for it. I have one fullset doll, so there others (almost) exactly like her, but I don't mind. I saw a doll with a lovely style and decided I wanted that for mine as well. Mine does look different and has a different color scheme, because I don't want to blatantly copy someone. In all honesty, I do like it that I have not seen another LTF Leah like mine. It does give her a little extra. However, If one does comes to my attention, I can only say we got similar taste (and that is awesome!).

The problem with a popular sculpt is that you start comparing your own to the others. I gave my DZ Annie a face-up myself, but it is still a amateur face-up and sometimes I do feel she isn't "as good" as the others. I don't want to have her painted professionaly either, because at other times I do really love her look and the fact that she feels really mine, because I painted her myself. My Ante had vampire fangs for a while, but I removed those and resculpted her lips a little bit. So now she is truly "one of a kind" lol. Yet, it is not as smooth as a pro would have done and everything. So, yeah, there are two sides to it.

    17. While I can relate to the "special" feeling of having that doll that no one else seems to have, I tend to go for what I like. If it's a popular sculpt, that's great. If it's not, that's also great.

    18. I was just thinking of this thread and the awesome TV show orphan black you've got a bunch of identical girls but they are so different that I often forget that they are all the same actress.

    19. I wouldn't bother be if a lot of people had a sculpt that I want at all!
I actually like seeing all the different ways people put their dolls together.
And most of the time they looks pretty different even though they're the same sculpt.
I mean sometimes seeing so many actually makes me want a particular sculpt, because I see all the potential they have.
I think that's kinda the point of them being customizable. So many people can have the same sculpt but yet they can looks so different.
So what if they're wearing similar clothing (unless you make the clothes it's hard to find original clothes around here anyway), or have a similar personality.
I think in the end all it comes down to is if you love the doll and how it looks.

    20. I have no problem with the popularity of the mold but with the looks. I never try to come up with something different, I just think of something that goes with the doll or character. I didn't know that similar looks could bother me until I found a doll I really liked and I thought about his hair color, eye and everything, then I saw another owner with the same doll and the same look I have planned for it ...it made me so sad because I don't want to be called a "copy cat" since she was first....so I didn't purchase the doll because that kind of look was the one for me but there was a similar one already and that bothered me a lot. ;/
