"Over Popular" Sculpts & Originality

Apr 22, 2014

    1. I personally tend to avoid popular sculpts, partially because of their popularity and partially because they usually just don't fit my tastes. I generally have an affinity for the less-popular sculpts. That said, I own a PKF Pong and I don't have a problem with his popularity. He's cute and he's bursting with personality. He's daddy's favorite. I can see why people would feel ... bored ... with the popular sculpts. But I agree with kita, "that's for them to feel". Putting it on confessions like it's some big problem is just silly. So what if a sculpt is popular? No one cares if someone else is "sick of it". Get the dolls you like, not dolls that are popular or unpopular. If you try to appease everyone else, you'll be the one left wanting.

I kind of feel like dolls are similar to tattoos, but less permanent. Everyone will have an opinion on it, but none of their opinions matter because you got it for you, not for anyone else.

    2. I really love getting a rare doll, or I jump for the chance to be the first owner of a doll when they come out, so I don't think I'd get a really popular sculpt, but that's just me.

    3. The only thing I really "dislike" about wanting a popular doll is if it's a limited and everyone's mega want drives the price up. Oh Williams, I should have bought your first release when no one wanted you. T^T Sigh.

Other than that, I don't care too much how popular or unpopular my dolls sculpts are. If I don't want to be "just like everyone else" I just see it as a fun challenge to make mine a little different, instead of just writing off a sculpt I like. I purchased a Chloe myself last year and had seen so many complaints about how all Chloes looked the same. So I looked at the database and there were some very sassy and different looking Chloe's, but at the time the majority were very sweet and innocent looking, and default or painted by Andreja. Which don't get me wrong, there were still some very pretty girls, but that wasn't how I wanted my girl to look. Instead I just challenged myself to paint my girl, keep her from getting too doe-eyed and gave her some super black lips. Not saying she has the omg most unique face-up ever, but she looked "unique" enough that I was happy with her and more so with the look I created for her.

    4. i like popular sculpts, i think it's cause i see a lot of them done so differently so i can see how many ways there is to style, even if so many other people already have the doll. i want a chloe eventually, she is very pretty and i can see why she is popular!

    5. Eh...
Personally I don't think it matters.
I mean, seeing it all the time might make it lose a bit of luster for me...
so I may not use it as one of my more "main" characters and opt for a more "Unique/ Uncommon" sculpt instead.
But in the end if I love the doll that is all that really counts.
Just because there are people out there who dislike those popular sculpts doesn't really effect me and my decisions.
That's their prerogative, and those dolls are popular for a reason.

    6. Personally I think that if it's a doll that you like, it's popularity/abundance in the hobby shouldn't matter. Regarding the Chloe, I've seen many unique variations of her, some where you can't even tell it's the same sculpt!

    7. Looking at this thread, I also thought of Lishe, who was extremely popular when I first started in the hobby. She was everywhere! But I knew she wouldn't be right for me or my resin family. I still think Lishe is beautiful.

Would you buy a doll that is a very popular sculpt and would it bother you that a lot of people had the same doll as you?
Probably the most popular sculpt I have is a Volks School A, but I rarely see one who looks anything like mine. Most BJDs are real chameleons. With a unique faceup, they can look like a completely different sculpt, so it can be easy to make them all your own. And seeing other School As on DoA doesn't make me jealous. I like seeing how different they are. And I didn't buy him because he was popular, I bought him just because I had a "feeling" he might work for me.

Do you feel that making your dolls look original and different is really important to you?
Absolutely, I like my dolls to be different, but sometimes it is just the way their characters act that makes them seem different to me. Several of my Volks still wear their default hair and eyes, but they still "look" unique to me.

      - and does anyone else not care about other people's opinions of your dolls?
I think that almost everyone cares what other people think of their dolls. I mean, we generally WANT others to like our dolls! It's part of our socializing. But I am not heartbroken if my dolls are not to someone else's taste. I put them together, style them and create for them just for me. I'm the one living with them, so I'd better love them!

Also, it's possible that the super-popular sculpts are the ones that are perfectly symmetrical and even in their features (like movie stars). Supposedly people are universally attracted to faces like those, and that would make those sculpts popular. But... most of mine are quirky or odd or unconventional, and they are generally less popular. They just happen to be the ones that I like.

    8. I didn't even know Cloes were so popular until people started complaining about it. Maybe those people are spending too much time looking at other people's dolls rather than finding the ones they like for themselves.

    9. I feel like I probably wouldn't buy a sculpt that was already super popular, because I'd know whatever I wanted to do would have already been done better by someone else. However, if I was completely enamoured by a sculpt, and I had looked around and not found a face that was similarly gorgeous and a body that was similarly poseable, then I wouldn't worry too much about my dolly being overpopular. At the end of the day, it's going to be popular for a reason, you know?

    10. Who cares what other people think, you do you. Plus don't forget, when a sculpt is popular it means a lot of people like it and there's nothing wrong with that (;

    11. I love owning uncommon sculpts, and sharing them with people who either don't know of them, or of their potential! Conversation piece! But I seek face shapes that suit characters, so popular or unpopular ultimately doesn't matter to me. I actually avoided a popular sculpt once, only to go back to it in the end. Haha~ I've learned a few things since then. It is silly to avoid something simply because it is popular, if you really do like it.

Also, widespread love for a doll or company/artist isn't a bad thing. LOVE is not a bad thing. :)

    12. In all honesty, I don't think I could actually give a monkey's nut what everyone else thought of a sculpt - as long as it meant something to me and spoke to me, then it's my baby and I'd love him/her regardless of whether there's millions of the same out there. I honestly believe that people project important parts of their personalities onto their dolls, so to make someone feel bad for buying a popular sculpt because it is so beautiful (and in all fairness, Chloe is possibly one of the most beautiful dolls I have EVER seen - her sculpt is perfect), I just can't see the sense in that.

If a doll speaks to you, then it's the one for you, regardless of whether that doll has spoken to a million other people too ^^

    13. I like what I like - if it happens to be unpopular or popular, it doesn't matter to me. My girl that I have at home didn't even have owner pictures when I bought her...so I'm definitely trying to get her out there so that people hear about the brand and how awesome they are.

Annndd then there's the MNF Chloe I wanna get. Like opposite ends of the popularity spectrum! But I love when other people own the same dolls as me...just means I get to see that sculpts potential!

    14. I personally love popular sculpts if it suits my tastes. They are popular for a reason, I think.

I actually get happy if I meet people with the same sculpt, rather than sad!!

    15. I felt this same type of dilema when it came to naming my children. I know this sounds like an odd example but, growing up, I always disliked having such a common name and wanted to make sure I never named any of my kids something "common" (like having five Sarah's in your class growing up could get rather annoying lol). We really loved the name "Emma," but chose to name our first daughter "Felicity" because we liked it and it wasn't common at all. Then daughter number two came around and, you know what? We named her Emma. Because we love the name. If you love the Fairyland Minifee Chloe, then I think that nothing should stop you from getting her. Besides, with all the customization you can do, there really are no two dolls that are completely alike. That's just my two cents ;)

    16. I don't care if alot of people have the sculpt there are alot of way you can customize them but ultimatly it is what you want

    17. I love Chloe. And Dollshe Saint. I actually want to get a Saint some day. I love everyone's pictures of their Chloes and Saints. I am sure that my Saint would be my own Saint.

Buy what makes you happy. :)

    18. I was planning to get MNF Chloe. But I didn´t know that it was so popular until I saw this threat!

I don´t care if the sculpt if too popular because it is so much more important that you love your doll. And I really like that sculpt. I think that it is also nice to see a lot of owner pics about a doll that I am planning to get. I am also planning to do face up by myself so she will be different than all the others.

    19. If a sculpt is popular that must mean it looks good right? Even if a lot of people have the same sculpt the dolls rarely look alike, take soom dia for example

    20. I just love the doll that touches my heart and brings out good feeling in me - I don't care if others share my love or hate them, if they love them then I think they have very good taste lol. I learned lately that no one can depend on the value of collecting to benefit them in retirement - so enjoy what you love for that reason, and only that reason.
