"Over Popular" Sculpts & Originality

Apr 22, 2014

    1. I don't know that I've ever had that issue, I'm more drawn to dolls with unique features (love iplehouse <3) so I haven't felt one way or another about a lot of the really popular ones. I enjoy them in the sense of looking but I don't know that I'd ever want one for myself. Then again my opinion could change if I see a really awesome faceup that changes the whole preconception I may have had of a sculpt. Probably the best part of this hobby that you most definitely CAN have the same doll as someone else and it will in no way still be the same doll xD

    2. I just like the dolls I think are pretty because I think they are pretty. I pretty much don't care how popular the sculpt is or isn't. :O

    3. I really want a Resinsoul Mei, I just love how different she can look.

    4. The fact that a doll is popular doesn't bother me a bit. I agree with the previous comment: customization can make the same sculpt like really different. Even with just a "conventional" amount of customization, a doll takes on his or her own look.

    5. I have 4 incarnations of Chloe with 1 more to complete my collection...Chloe "fits" with me, all my collection gels together...I dont really care whatever
people think of the dolls I collect...I like "pretty" I am not into horns and hooves its not me, as my taste is not other peoples. Never be tempted to be Influenced by someone else's choice, just because they dont like your choice in dolls...thats what this hobby is all about, collect what makes you happy. Just because you like a popular sculpt doesnt make you any different from anyone else. These dolls are so customizable, so whether its a default faceup or yoir own or an artists, you make your own little character...you go ahead with what makes you happy

    6. I own one popular doll & that's a MNF Shiwoo (granted he's the event vampire head but still a Shiwoo) & I love him to bits, Shiwoo used to be VERY popular & I loved seeing pics of them in fact the other two dolls I own aren't really that popular & it makes me sad because there aren't many pictures of them but they still make me happy & that's what should matter;not if something is popular because popularity is limited. The popular dolls today are different than when I first joined in '06. Being different/unique is a difficult thing because nothing is truely unique, everyone is inspired by something even if it's unconsiously so don't worry about being unique or having a popular doll just do what makes you happy! I do enjoy seeing Chloe but I don't think I'll get one (unless shes tan) but if you want one go for it!

    7. I buy dolls based on how much I like the sculpt. I could care less if 50000000000000 other people have the same doll as me. If I like it, it shall come home. :)

Sometimes liking popular sculpts can help the final decision to buy - there's way more owner pictures out there so you can see how the doll looks in a variety of clothes/ wigs/ faceups/ skin tones and get a good idea if the sculpt really is for you. :)

    8. Me too!!! :) I don't care if other people also have the same sculpt like mine. I still can change their face up, outfits, wigs, etc to make my own style doll and I don't think there has a doll which 100% exactly looks like mine. People have different taste, different mind. So they would surely be different.

    9. In my case, I bring my dolls home based on characters I already have or in some cases, because I truly liked the sculpt and then a new character is born :) so, most of the times I search and search until I find the perfect sculpt that fits this character and as long as I 'feel it' like my character I don't care if it's popular or not to be honest, I have a Soom Dia on my wishlist and they are quite popular too same as Migidoll Ryu which I just bought recently. But they really fit as my characters so I don't care about how popular it is ~

    10. I see some of the dolls I want everywhere too... seems like everyone has them haha...
It does make me feel a bit uneasy cause some people might judge me for also getting them but.........really, I got into this hobby so my dolls can make me happy. That includes getting the dolls I really want!
So I'd NEVER not get a doll I love just cause it's overly popular or has a bad reputation or anything else.
After all I fall in love with a sculpt because I personally really like it, and not because lots of others have it, though I do like seeing what others make of it, the versatility and such.

    11. It wouldn't make a tad of difference to me if my doll was a very popular sculpt and millions of people had the same exact doll I had. Basically, what matters to me is that I outfit, accessorize, and have the face-up for my doll that I like and that fits the character and personality I have planned for him or her. What others think of my doll isn't terribly important to me.

    12. It wouldn't bother me if a doll was popular - I would buy it - because I like what I like. Although I must admit my choices aren't very popular because of what I like.

    13. Radish ~ I love your response "my choices aren't very popular because of what I like." To me, that means you are your own person. You don't pick things or dolls because they are trendy or what "everyone" else likes. You get what you alone like and quite possibly what you like is unusual, distinct, and unique. It is my belief that it is usually self-assured, unique, and confident people who choose that type of doll.

    14. I don't have a lot of popular sculpts, but it's not necessarily something I take into consideration when I am getting a doll. With customization dolls can look very different from one to the next so I don't think it's a big thing to worry about. Your doll can be as unique as you make it.

    15. I really want a minifee chloe. I know a lot of people have one, but I still plan to get her and it doesn't bother me at all.

    16. Bahaha I was just about to say that MNF Chloe's were everywhere! A friend told me she wanted one so bad but "everyone has a Chloe so it makes me not want to get her". I told her she was crazy.

I think add long as you like a doll, who cares how many other people have one? The hobby is about you.

    17. While this is a nice sentiment meant as a compliment, I just want to put it out there that it could easily be a huge slap in the face to a lot of others. The accusation that people who own the so-called "popular" sculpts aren't unique people is pretty harsh, and throws a large judgmental blanket over a significant part of the hobby's population. People are, with perhaps the exception of few people, buying the dolls they do because they love them - not because they are chasing some trend. There is nothing stopping a person from owning a MNF Chloe (considered widely popular) as well as a Soom Namu (which could be argued as vastly underpopular). Let's not cast stones where they don't need to be, however inadvertently.

    18. I did hesitate when I first got my Chloe, because she is a popular sculpt... but there is a reason she's popular: she is beautiful! She's a great starter doll for many, IMO, as she is easier to faceup and can have so many different looks. I sold my Chloe and I've recently found myself missing her sculpt again... so she's back on my wishlist!

Personally, I say don't listen to the BJD confessions blog. I think it had good intentions in the beginning, but people have used it to directly ruin the hobby for some. For others, the passive aggressive bullying has had a negative influence on the hobby as a whole.

I think doll sculpts become popular for several reasons: someone famous in our hobby has that sculpt and people can see the potential the sculpt possesses through that person's photos, the doll is easy to come by, the doll is versatile in looks, and/or the company is excellent. I personally find Fairyland to be a solid company, highly communicative and with lots of accessories, with a fantastically engineered set of bodies to go with their sculpts -- that is why Fairyland is my favorite company right now. It doesn't bother me that they are popular or that lots of people have Fairyland dolls (especially Chloes) because I feel like FL deserves the attention ^_^

The other thing to keep in mind is this isn't only a doll sculpt, but this is someone's art. Imagine how they feel knowing so many people love the sculpt they made!

Do you feel that making your dolls look original and different is really important to you? and does anyone else not care about other people's opinions of your dolls?
They don't need to look original, but they often end up looking so because I usually do the faceups and they come out looking how they want to look. All that matters to me is that I can recognize my doll (such as a Chloe) in a sea of similar sculpts (such as a bunch of other Chloes) and that she is styled to look how I feel her character should look.

The only times I care about other people's opinions of my dolls is when they have nice things to say about them, lol! To me, my dolls are the best versions of whatever sculpt they are, because I put so much thought and love into accessorizing and painting them. No one's ever insulted one of my dolls before, but if they did, I'm sure the only thing that would change for me is how I felt about the person saying such things, not how I felt about my dolls. My dolls are part of me, after all!

    19. Each doll is a canvas. All canvases start the same. It's what you do with them that makes them unique. Sure, I do take a little pleasure in being the only person I know with a Sheba head, but the downside is I can't see how other Sheba heads look by other people.

    20. There are no "unoriginal sculpts" only unoriginal owners. Make her your own, do what YOU want with her. Just take the Blythe community as inspiration. They are all working with pretty much the same stickin' face, and they make thousands of uniquely original dolls.
