1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

"Over Popular" Sculpts & Originality

Apr 22, 2014

    1. It does not bother me at all as all dolls are unique depending on how we dress them, and hand painted dolls all vary a bit and have their own personalities. I actually think it is fun to see how other people do the same doll.

    2. I'm in love with the Elf Ducan sculpt. But seeing how popular he is just makes me want to get him more badly LOL

To me, popular or not isn't the matter. I saw 3 Elf Ducans, belongs to 3 people, stood next to each other and they were completely difference from inside out. Their personalities and expressions are so beautiful and unique. So I think the popularity of the sculpt is not the matter.

    3. I generally don't like popular sculpts, but it's more of a personal preference than a statement. If I avoided anything popular than I wouldn't have bought a Minifee XD

    4. I own a Saint with black hair. The popularity or rarity of a sculpt doesn't matter to me; I like what I like. In the end, my dolls are each still quite different from any of their kin out there.

    5. I wouldn't mind at all if my doll was a popular mold. If anything I might get better ideas how to dress/style it by seeing other peoples take on it!
In general I don't post much about my dolls. It's kind of a personal hobby so other people rarely see my dolls anyways.

I'm a sucker for LittleFee Chloe :) Not even sure if she's as popular as her larger counterpart.

    6. Would you buy a doll that is a very popular sculpt and would it bother you that a lot of people had the same doll as you?
More often than not, I tend to have very little interest in popular sculpts. I usually just tend to like the less popular sculpts the most. That being said, if I fall for a sculpt that is popular, I'm not going to avoid just because it's popular. I choose my dolls based on what I like and how well it fits my character, so I really don't care if it's popular or not.

Do you feel that making your dolls look original and different is really important to you?
I like having original dolls, but it's most important that it fits my character. Also, just because a sculpt is popular doesn't mean yours will be "just like everybody else's".

For example, Migidoll Jina gets a lot of confessions and complaining. That there are too many, that they're all boring, that every single one is a rainbow girly boy in a fur wig. My Jina is a very natural girly girl, with long red curls and traditional conservative dresses. I did it because it fit her character. I didn't want a girly boy Jina, but if that had been what I wanted, I would have done it anyway.

Does anyone else not care about other people's opinions of your dolls?

I don't. I have my dolls for me, not anyone else. Unless they are buying my dolls for me and paying me to clothe, faceup, style and roleplay them, no one else has any right to tell me what to do with my dolls. I don't like to hear negative comments about them, but it's not going to make me change them. A little off topic, but this is actually a big part of why I left Tumblr---too many people insulting others' dolls for no good reason, and too many people only in the hobby for popularity and attention. I like being part of a community where people do their own thing without seeking approval or praise. Compliments are nice, but in the end, you should be buying what you love. I think just doing what you like (and not trying to follow a trend or do the opposite for shock value) is where some of the most beautiful and interesting ideas start.

    7. I think originality is important, and I'd rather have a not-so popular sculpt over a really popular one. That's especially the case with Fairyland dolls, I really dislike the Chloe sculpt but that's all I ever see! D: But I do believe that people should be doing whatever they want, and I won't judge anyone that has an overused sculpt. It's their money and their preferrence.
(There's also the exception of the Migidoll Ryu sculpt. There's just so many ways you can go with that sculpt, and I just can't get enough of Propertyoftheuchiha's Dice. <3 )

    8. Would you buy a doll that is a very popular sculpt and would it bother you that a lot of people had the same doll as you?
If I liked the sculpt yes, of course I would buy it. It's me, my money and my doll family, so if a doll caught my eye (and I had the money to buy her/him) I'd go ahead and buy it.
It wouldn't bother me if many other collectors had the same doll because they have the right to choose whatever they like:)

Do you feel that making your dolls look original and different is really important to you?
When I first started with bjds all I wanted was to dress them all up in Sweet Lolita clothes; I loved that style, still love it and you can say that it's not the most original style for dolls, but I didn't care. Now that I have had my dolls for some time, they've started to show their personalities and I figured their style better. Unfortunatly, none of them has a thing for heavy body mods or things like that, so I have to choose more common clothing and accessories

Does anyone else not care about other people's opinions of your dolls?

I don't. Or, at least, I care for opinions that came from friends and people I've known for a long time in this hobby.

    9. I'm sure having the same sculpt doesn't mean you'll have identical dolls as everyone that has that doll. Everyone has their own twists. I'd never deny myself a doll I want because people are 'tired of it' Who cares? In a few years it's going to be 'remember that sculpt? It was awesome, retro and no one uses it anymore, so now it's totally cool and classic cause it's under rated' But, if it booms again, it will be 'too mainstream' this cycle goes on and on and for more than just dolls.

I want a Bory, I don't care how popular or overused he is, I'm totally in love with him and not one person is going to change my mind.

I guess it really depends on how you view your fandom status over your personal feelings and opinions.
