Owning Various sizes of BJD's

Jan 14, 2013

    1. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having multiple sizes?
I own 60cm and 45cm dolls. I have different body types (SD/SD13/SDGr) but I consider them all to be roughly the same size. I've tried SD16 and YoSD but it didn't work out. The SD16 body just stuck out too much compared to my other girls, especially since they all would have been around the same age. I couldn't really get the YoSD to fit in the "world", so I ended up selling her. I even have a little trouble with the SDCs - they seem too short to represent anyone older than 10 in comparison to my larger crew.

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
My SDs and SDCs are in the same world - I don't really have a set storyline, it flows and changes all the time depending on my interests. The SDCs are tweens while the SDs are mid-late teens to late 20s, so it all works out!

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
I store them together in their own boxes, if that's what you mean! I'd also display whomever I wanted together, regardless of storyline.

      4) If you don't really have a storyline for your dolls, how do the different sized dolls interact?
Even if they don't have a storyline they'll have approximate ages in my mind, so they'd interact based on those ages. The ages would also depend on their comparative sizes. It just wouldn't make sense to me to have a 14 yr old SDC interact with a 15 year old SD, the size difference in one year of age would seem too much. It's definitely a matter of personal preference.

    2. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?
I own many sizes, from 11.2cm(Puki) to a 70cm(Spiritdoll Proud). Sometimes the oddest sizes are the most appealing to me, such as those in the 48-50cm range.
I don`t feel it being weird having them, but demerits of having different sizes is sometimes they won`t look good together. (But then again, some dolls of the same size already look odd next to each other)

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
I don`t have any storylines, this is maybe why I can collect a variety. I personally think MSD`s and SD`s are the hardest to intermingle however, and do not take much photos of just these two sizes together.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
If you mean displaying, I do put them out together when I do display, though not all my dolls are out at the same time so it`s not a mob of dolls.

      4) If you don't really have a storyline for your dolls, how do the different sized dolls interact?
I interact them in terms of display. I like to set themes (ex. antique toybox), and give them outfits that match the theme and set them up together.

    3. Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?

I love having dolls of various sizes - I think it makes them look more interesting when they're on display. I don't think it's weird at all - is it weird having different sized paintings on your wall, or different sized books on a shelf?

Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart? Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline? If you don't really have a storyline for your dolls, how do the different sized dolls interact?

As I said, I find a doll display to be more visually interesting when the sizes are varied, so yes - they're on display together. My dolls aren't part of a single storyline - so most of them don't "interact" in any kind of 3-d fiction way. That said, my dolls mostly have backstories, and I sometimes photograph them in smaller groups with those in mind, and I do find it distracting to have dolls that are clearly out of scale with each other posed in a way that suggests that they're supposed to have some kind of human-style relationship - but that's just because it doesn't look natural enough for me. But that certainly doesn't mean they can't sit together on the doll shelf!

    4. I have the three sizes, SD, MSD and YOSD and different sizes within each of those categories. I like variety. I don't do story lines and my bjds don't have specific personalities. I mostly just like to look at them and make clothes for them. I also like to do photo shoots with them in different set ups like livingroom, bedroom and playroom.

    5. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?
Not at first, I tried mainly to stay within 57-60cm region. It's only when I got my boy that I moved up to a bigger size, 62-65cms. Now I'm the other way, I bought my first tiny at the end of last year, I'm waiting for my first MSD to ship and I'll be getting another this year some time.

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
They'll be part of the same story, I don't think I'll shoot them together though. I think the size might look odd.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
My 57-65cms all sit together in a row, the tiny sits on his sisters' laps. I'd keep the MSD on a separate shelf but that's only because there is no more space for him with the other, bug if I did have room I would keep him together with them for sure. It's in no way related to his size that he'd be apart from them.

    6. Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?
I really like owning dolls of different sizes. It's not weird at all. ^^
Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
They are all part of one world, but some only know each other over a character and don't do much together.
Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
They're all standing in my cupboard together.

    7. 1. Yes, I love a variety. My dolls range from 10 cm to 80 cm, with the majority being ~60 cm. Nothing weird about it; I love the look of this crowd.

      2. I don't really have consistent storylines for many of them, so that's not an issue. My MSDs and Tinies don't have real backstories at all, just their basic characters/identities. Most of the bigger dolls are paired up in couples or friend-units, so those groups/couples tend to sit together. But I mix-and-match the seating configurations according to my mood.

      3. The collection is only loosely segregated by size-- because they're all sitting on furniture, & I have to consider the size of the furniture & the height of each of my shelves. For example, the EIDs have to sit in the tallest shelves, and their couches need lots of risers underneath them for the extra height. The teensiest Tinies live together in a plastic genie-bottle. The MSDs all live on the shelf that has the MSD-scale furniture and decorations. The 60-65cms all mingle together because they all fit on the same size furniture. The enormous 80cm Mecha Angel merman, too long/tall for any shelf or furniture, lounges by himself in the giant bigscreen-TV shelf in the middle. (If this all sounds very complicated, you can take a tour via the link in my signature. ^^)

      4. Random interaction, also according to my whims. I just like throwing 'em together in photographs as the mood takes me. It is a lot of fun to make a Yo-SD climb onto an EID's shoulder and perch there like a parrot. :D

    8. Yes I like owning different size dolls...I have two pukipukis, one pukifee, two cherish dolls, three honey delfs and two kid delfs. I keep them all together on the same table, some standing, some sitting or whatever. Sometimes I do photoshoots with only one, and other times with all of them - depending of course on my mood and theirs

    9.
    10. 1) Do you like owning a variety of different sized dolls? Is it weird having multiple sizes?
      Yes. I own dolls raging in height from 6cm to 60cm. I don't think it's weird or "off-looking". But that being said, I try to stick to a certain style or look to maintain a sense of cohesiveness between all the different sizes. I also have dolls ranging in size within a certain height (Leeke Mikhaila, MinoruWorld Jr., Rosette, Cherishdoll) While it's fun to have different sizes to play with and have interacting with each other, it can become expensive or challenging to dress them all, if you're not a fan of sewing~ ^^;

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
Nyeehh. Kinda. My SD's are akin to deities in my 'doll world' so they're meant to bigger than an average person (MSD). Although the different 'story-worlds' intermingle, the SD's (or Guardians) mostly keep to their own thing. I'd never pair an SD and MSD as a romantic couple, but that's my own preference. :)

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?

My dolls are on display in my bedroom and there's not a whole lot of space, so the bigger dolls are often fancy 'seats' for the littler ones XD

      4) If you don't really have a storyline for your dolls, how do the different sized dolls interact?
Pretty much, I just pair up whoever I feel like if and when the mood strikes. I think it's cute to have big dolls holding smaller ones~<3 (or tiny dolls holding even teenier ones!)

    11. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having multiple sizes?
I didn't think I would at first, I though having different sizes would be weird, but it's not. I actually like having different sizes. It gives a sense of variety.

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
They intermingle. They all originate with different stories and from different places (different galaxies, fantasy lands, etc), but they have easily come together to interact with each other - and I find it fun to have my characters interact.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
They all sit together on top of my bookcase on the same park bench - I don't own that many right now. They are all cute together.

    12. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?

I have a variety of doll sizes. I really like to keep them all in the same story, but I had to do some figuring to get them to all go together. I have all my MSDs 11 years old at the utmost, my tiny humans are much younger. My Delf hybrids are teenagers, and my IH YID is early college. My 70cm is extremely tall and in his 20s, but I find it works for Halloweentown. :)

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?

      They mingle.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?

I keep them stored away in containers or boxes, but when I have them out, they are all together.

      4) If you don't really have a storyline for your dolls, how do the different sized dolls interact?

It was much trickier for me to get all the mingling details worked out before I had my big story going.

    13. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?

I have everything here from a tiny little "dollhouse scale" Elly Elf Banji (Issun) to a massive giant of a Superhero-type EID Akando (Palrah), and it's never weirded me out. Dolls, like a lot of things, just come in all kinds of shapes and sizes. Having a mixed-scale doll collection seems no odder to me than mixed-size books on my shelves or walking into an all-ages crowd of people at the mall. Variety seems natural, and it's been a very long time since all of my crew were the same size.

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?

I'm not so big on the "story-thing" these days, but I do still play the character game to some extent and the level of interconnectivity between my doll characters varies a lot. Most of my 1/4-scale MSDs and MiniFees, as well as one of the 1/6-scale LittleFees, are the children of larger members of the crew. The other LittleFees and YoSDs here aren't attached to any of the larger dolls, though. I do tend to be consistant about their ages... They're all "little kids"... but I don't own their parents in resin form.

My Banji is a total independant. Issun isn't a child in spite of his size. He's my resin version of the side-kick character from the video game O-kami.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?

My one and only hard and fast rule for this collection has always been that the dolls I wanted to pose and photograph together had to look good together. That's why I tend to stick to the same companies when I want to have dolls that are related, like my twin Tsubakis (Hanaki and Hakata) and their father (Yomi, an SD13 School A) who are all older Volks sculpts, or my MiniFee Elf Shiwoo and Elf Shushu siblings (Koza and Kiji) and their parents (Chidori and Kitsumaru, a Delf Miyu and Shine couple) who all came from Cerberus Project. Even if the dolls aren't related on the character level, I still tend to pose them in their cabinets with other dolls they seem right with. My YoSDs are sitting with my Heath and Cristal, for instance, while my LittleFees and their 1/6-scale Soom playmates have a shelf of their own.

      4) If you don't really have a storyline for your dolls, how do the different sized dolls interact?

As I said, I'm not really about stories any more... but because I tend to think of the smaller dolls as younger than the larger ones, I do have some parent-or-guardian and child groups.

I also have one LittleFee (Pally) who's a chibi/kid version *of* one of my larger dolls (Palrah, my EID Akando, who's the resin avatar of one of my favorite City of Heroes MMO characters-). Later in the year I plan on getting grown up, EID versions of Grey Kestrel and Red Cardinal as well... another pair of City characters who currently exist in LittleFee chibi form. There's bound to be some interaction between the 'City of Chibis' dolls and their larger 'City of Heroes' counterparts.

    14. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?
Yes! I'm an equal opportunity doll owner! I don't think it looks weird; the SDs look cute holding the tinys.

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
Well, most of my dolls have their own back stories and personalities, but collectively I imagine them as dolls living in a human sized world. They are aware they are dolls and work together to get things done.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
They just sit around willy-nilly wherever I have space for them.

      4) If you don't really have a storyline for your dolls, how do the different sized dolls interact? See question 2 :)

    15. i think I am most obsessed with msd size, but I have to have at least two of the same doll (different faces) I just don't like the idea of lonely dolls :(

    16. I get different sizes for different ages so it all looks coherent and flows nicely. SD13 and up are adults, SD10s are like 12-14, 1/4 are 7-10, and 1/6 are like 3-4 years old.

    17. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having multiple sizes?
My smallest is a Soom Faery at 30cm while my largest is a Super Gem hybrid at 68cm. I have five MSDs (two MNFs, three standard MSDs and a 50cm Obitsu), the faery and then the rest are 62cm or taller. It's not weird at all for me, especially since the dolls are split up between stories. The smaller dolls are meant to be the children, nieces, etc of larger dolls or are just children by themselves. The faery is a guardian to my 62cm DZ Tulip.

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
They're all broken up into individual families or stories so the different sizes interact with each other as dictated by their story. As I said above, some MSDs are children of the SDs so they interact in that way.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
I store them in their boxes when needed and they're all intermingled on my bookshelves in whatever way pleases me at the time. :)

      4) If you don't really have a storyline for your dolls, how do the different sized dolls interact?
They interact in whatever way I feel like at the time, even if I didn't have storylines for them. For instance, two SD's from two completely different worlds are currently having a tea party on my bookshelf while upstairs on another shelf, two sisters and a completely unrelated little girl (all MSDs) are having a sleep over. :D

    18. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?
I have two MSDs and one 70cm on the way, and I can honestly say I love the idea of having a variety of sizes. I think the concept of having cute minis to fuss over and a great big giant to cuddle is fun and exciting. One day I'd like to own a yo-sd too.

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
They share a story line. There's really no explanation for the height difference; all three dolls are adults. Their storylines are realistically in keeping with one another but honestly, I think photographing them together will be comical - which isn't a bad thing to me! :)

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
I really don't know where my 70cm boy will go. Right now my two MSDs live on top of a small cupboard in my bedroom beneath a protective sheet. I think my SD will also live in my room for a while once he gets here. Eventually I'll be moving all of mine and my mum's dolls into the spare room once it's all done up.

      4) If you don't really have a storyline for your dolls, how do the different sized dolls interact?
I should imagine I'll pose them all together like I would my two MSDs on their own. I'll also probably 'play' with them together, because I'm goofy like that.

    19. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJD sized dolls? Is it weird having multiple sizes?

I love having so many different sized dolls! I have an Idealian boy and all the way down to a little puki girl. I really like the diversity in sculpting, posing, and so on, that each size range offers. I think it's fun :)

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different story lines and overall kept apart?

Hrm. Some of them are in the same storyline. I had a pair of Brava Bambi girls (MSD sized) who were a part of my storyline with my SD's, but they were meant to be children. And my puki and pukifee's are fairylike creatures... for me though, MSD is the perfect 'child size' for an SD... I also have yoSD sized dolls acting as 3-4 year olds with my SD's. They're a little small, but I don't mind. Other than that, my dolls have a fair few different storylines that they're from.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?

I store them together! All my boys and girls go on one big shelf together. When I store them, I don't think of them as having 'stories' together, more that they're all just on display for me to look at. <3! I really enjoy seeing them all together.

      4) If you don't really have a storyline for your dolls, how do the different sized dolls interact?

For some of them, who don't have stories, or aren't part of the same story, they just look cute together so I photograph them. I'm not very faithful to the whole 'seperate worlds' thing in my house xD

    20. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?
I have dolls from 15cm to 68cm and it's more the sculpt that dictates whether I'll get it than the size. I actually have the same character in 2 different sizes (21cm & 44cm). I have more MSD's than any other size.

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
They intermingle and are "outside" their respective stories but still keep to their storylines. I have 3 couples/pairings that are mixed as well (tiny/MSD, MSD/SD & SD/tiny).

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
Everybody stays in their box when I'm not doing stuff with them due to idiot cat who firmly believes that doll wigs are actually his toys and a decided lack of space to display them.
