Owning Various sizes of BJD's

Jan 14, 2013

    1. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?

I have SD, MSD and Fairyland LittleFees. For a long time I only ever bought SD sized dolls, then I saw different sized dolls that I liked, so I got those and I find the different sizes all work well and make my collection more interesting.

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?

All my dolls intermingle as part of an extended family. I have a father and son, a stepson, siblings, cousins, and their friends. The only dolls who don't fit into the whole 'family and friends' scenario are the elves. They don't have a storyline of their own either, so they just get to sit around looking pretty. The 'family and friends' thing is also the reason I won't buy 70cm dolls or tinies smaller than the LittleFees I have. I just don't think they would fit in all that well.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?

I would love to have the room I want to display my dolls, but for now they all share two display cabinets.

    2. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having multiple sizes?
I like the variety. My smallest is an MSD 42cm boy and my tallest are my Ringdoll growns who are over 70cm. I do know though that I never want anything smaller than a MSD size.

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different story lines and overall kept apart?
Yes I do mix them if I want their characters together in photo's etc....

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
At the moment they all live in one large cabinet. Space can become an issue particularly with the big boys.

    3. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJD sized dolls? Is it weird having multiple sizes?
I never thought it was weird. Size has never been a factor in purchasing a doll which is why I have dolls ranging from 70cm all the way down to 11cm.

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different story lines and overall kept apart?
They do. If they can't be part of the story then the doll probably won't be staying the collection very long. Most of the interaction are a sort of parent child or sibling relationship.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
Dolls are stored according to their relationship with one another. So all the demons hang out on the dresser, Isabella and her family live in the spare bedroom and so forth.

    4. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJD sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?
Yes, from 70 cm to 18 cm. It is not weird because they are not supposed to be the same size. However, I probably would not own MSD-sized "adult humans" or DM Lusion or Trinity doll. I like when my dolls are more or less the same scale.

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
Not sure if they will intermingle... My 54 cm to 70 cm dolls are part of diffenrent stories, but are all human (or human-looking vampires), so it's easy to make photostories with all of them like they were merely "actors" in my stories and thus create their own story. The 45 cm and below are magical creatures and thus hard to integrate among "normal humans". Moreover, they're not exactly in the same scale. As strange as it might seem, the smallest ones are only half their real size, as opposed to the 54 cm and up who are 1/3 their human size. But since they're still smaller than the "humans", it's not so bad.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
I store them all independently in their own box. I have too many of them to put them all together, so the boxes are spread all over my tiny apartment.

    5. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having multiple sizes?
I love owning different sizes! They all have their attractions. I like my SDs because they are large (lol), mature-looking, and they are less fiddly to make clothes for. My tallest are 68 cm, though, and I don't think I need any taller than that.

Smaller dolls are easier to handle. My MSDs don't weigh so much, so they are easier to take to meetings or fairs. Out of my four MSDs, three have a regular sort of size, which means it is easy to find clothes for them. They pose more easily than the SDs too, just because they aren't so heavy.

My teeny-tiny (16 cm) can quite easily stand on one leg - I have never been able to make any of my other dolls do that, which is partly due to my lack of skill, I know.

I have three "unusual" crew members in the sense that they are oddly-sized and/or differently-proportioned from the rest: Zaoll, Alex and Narsha. They are difficult to find things for, but I don't think they look strange next to my other resinoids.

      2) Do your MSDs and SDs intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
My dolls are all part of one family, so they are supposed to intermingle. In the beginning, I had a very strict rule where I took my first doll (DZ Hal, an MSD) as a starting-point and chose the other family members in function of him. Unfortunately I was really bad at estimating height XD - and my Dollzone MSD didn't exactly look like an 11-year-old next to my first SD (- don't get me started about the fact that her height as listed on the company website wasn't correct! she's two or three centimeter taller!).

However: in general, I got SDs for the adults, MSDs for the older children and tinies for the younger children. Along the way, I strayed from my basic principle of using Gwalchmei as a measure when I happened to come across sculpts that I found particularly attractive or apt for a character even though the size wasn't always perfect. Also, one of the things I like in this hobby is how dolls from different makers are constructed differently, so I avoid getting two of the same in any case. I'm capable of shelling a character just because it will give me an opportunity to get my hands on a new size of doll ;).

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
They sit together in varying constellations. I like seeing them together, and my enjoyment of them has increased a great deal now that I have dolls of different "ages". There are brothers and sisters, parents and children - it's fun!

I have one girl who doesn't *really* fit in - she's the younger version of one of my SDs and she doesn't look proportional to her older self at all. But - well, I'm glad to have her, she doesn't look odd in the crew per se, and it doesn't bother me when she mingles with the others.

    6. Yes I do, I have msd, slim msd, an SD and short SD. No tinies yet, I'm not sure is I will ever get one because I'm not drawn to them (only the old leekeworld girls... I think they were 25cm so not tiny tiny)

They all live together and I suppose they're all part of the same storyline but more like part of the same family. They often shared storyline a with other people's dolls but I am no longer in contact with those people so they may need their stories reinventing. But my latest two are in the same story and all my planned future dolls are.

As to those who don't have story lines, they are like best friends, who act like brother and sister.

    7. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJD sized dolls? Is it weird having multiple sizes?
I don't mind it, it's just how it turned out because I love certain sculpts and didn't care about the size they were offered in, I just wanted that particular sculpt. I don't think it's weird at all, it's just how things worked out. :)

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
My SDs and MSDs are the only ones that 'intermingle' as my MSD is sister to a SD, but my tinies (Lati Yellows) are in their own little world. I think the differences between a tiny and SD/MSD are drastic so it's nice to separate them and see things from the perspective of the tinies without worrying about how to integrate such bigger dolls into their storyline.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
Of course! When they're stored outside of their boxes and despite the fact that my tinies and other sizes are separated storyline-wise, I still love to see all of them together and to admire their sculpts among other features. :)

    8. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?
I do! Although most of my collection is MSD size, I do have two 1/6 scale (and two more on the way), one SD (and one on the way) and several tinies. To me, it's not weird at all to own several sizes. I like all my dolls.

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
My one SD boy that I currently have does not 'interact' with the rest of my dolls. My new SD is going to be part of a separate storyline so he wouldn't be interacting with the smaller dolls either.

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
Yes, I store them together. They all live in the home office. :)

      4) If you don't really have a storyline for your dolls, how do the different sized dolls interact?
My MSDs and smaller dolls are all part of the same storyline. The MSDs are all adults and teens, the 1/6 dolls are children and the tinies are babies and toddlers. For the most part, they're all members of a large extended family, and of course the ones who aren't 'related' are family friends. My one SD guy that I currently have is actually looking for a new home, and my incoming new big guy will be part of his own separate storyline, so he won't really be interacting with the others in stories at all.

    9. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?
Yes, I love owning a variety of sizes! It makes it fun! It also keeps me interested, so when I've had too much tiny (Is that even possible) I can go to the extreme and play with my SDs. :3

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
They all intermingle, they are one big family. Nobody gets separated or left out. c:

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
Yup! They all sit on the same bookshelf. However my two SDs (And one of the YOSDs who my SD boy takes care of/found) sits on the top shelf cause they have more room. ^___^

    10. My preference is for the larger sized dolls. I find their clothes to be a lot more enjoyable to make. That being said, at the beginning of this summer I got it in my head I NEEDED a yo sized doll. So now there is a 5star tiny mixed in. There is also a Doll Chateau tiny coming here soon. I didn't expect to like the little ones so much. (That 5star elf came on vaca with me).

Most my dolls are intermingled together right now, regardless of size or material they are made from. They move around the house frequently depending on what mood we are all in :)

    11. I only have one completed MSD at the moment, but I plan to get some YoSDs and SDs, too. MSDs are mostly adults in the range of regular human heights. SDs would be creatures beyond that--like the RS Ai girl I want is Asce, who's a jotunn (frost giant). I try to match the sizes to projected sizes--for example, jotunn are in the 55-60cm range, but a wendigo in full form would be 65cm or taller. They all do fit a storyline, so they would mingle. Yos would mostly represent children or child-like characters, but could also represent a dwarf. I kind of want a Puki to be gnome, too.

    12. 1) Do you like owning a variety of BJd sized dolls? Is it weird having mulptiple sizes?
I enjoy it and don't think it's weird at all! Sometimes I find the larger ones a little harder to handle, and I'm certainly running out of space for them. I have everything from a Mecha Angel (no head right now) to a tiny little Dollzone Christmas baby.

      2) Do your MSD's and SD's intermingle, or are they on completely different storylines and overall kept apart?
Most of mine don't have a storyline attached, but the ones that do "interact" the most - and they are different heights. I do also tend to group by size now because there's no way I could fit anything larger than an MSD on my cluttered desk!

      3) Do you store them together as well, or does it not matter since they are part of the same storyline?
Nobody gets stored except floating heads/bodies.

      4) If you don't really have a storyline for your dolls, how do the different sized dolls interact?
I tend to group like-sized dolls together for the space issue, but I also very much enjoy grouping dolls that don't look "right" together too, like putting my Minimee with my Volks girl. I like seeing a lot of variety when I look at my doll shelves.
