Planetdoll 41cm, 43cm and 45cm Discussion Part 2

Nov 26, 2008

    1. Thanks for the link PinkCow! I'll keep an eye on her listings!

Umaeril, you will get to see my girl soon! Looks like my boys will be going to the hockey game tomorrow night, so hopefully, I'll get home from my studio early enough to get to work on this girl's face! It's cold and wet here, but with the hubby gone, and unable to catch me, I'll prop open the door and heat up the garage before I spray MSC! Mwahahaha!!!!
My eyes are terrible, but they have always been bad, and now I wear very strong contacts, and reading glasses for close up. But, if I take my contacts out, I can see everything, really close up. I have to do half of a faceup with reading glasses, and half with my contacts out. If I drop a pastel on the floor with my contacts out though, I'm liable to trip on it and break my face...
Anyway, bell wire is a really thin wire (used for doorbells), that is coated with plastic. It's usually handy to wire tiny dolls (which I don't keep), but it sure did the trick on Riz! Because her knees and her thighs are wonky, I used one U shaped piece that I slipped through her lower torso, running it down to about the middle of her shins on each leg. I used two shorter pieces in her arms, from about an inch down from her shoulder joint to about an inch above her wrist joint. Did the trick nicely, and she's not as kicky/snappy as she was!

    2. EDIT: Sorry, wrong thread *blush*

    3. Well, this has been quite an evening, but my Riz is finally face-upped! I had her completely done, had just sprayed the last coat of MSC, and coming in from the garage, the wind caught my t-shirt and slapped it right against the wet MSC, covering her face in leather dust, which my shirts are always covered with...ARRGGGG!!! Redid the whole thing...

    4. Hi Wally wow, oh she is so beautiful, and that is too bad you had to do her over but what you have created with her is a stunning look for the Riz sculpt. You really did a lovely face up and very original too I think with that nice subtle scattering of freckles and essentially the entire look is a rather ethereal mature look. Thoughtful. I love the mouth you did. Thanks too about the wire info. I am so new to BJD and have never done anything like that, nor would I unless someone taught me what to do in person, lol. But everything I glean is something good to know about for the future.

    5. Thanks Umaeril! My sis likes much younger dolls than I do, so Riz aged about 5 years tonight! I tried to make her look a bit like my sis, who got brown as a bean in the summer, with a light smattering of freckles on the bridge of her nose, and has always had fabulous thick lashes and eyebrows. I loved the first set of lashes and brows I did, by round two, I was a little impatient...lol!
Wiring is super duper easy, and has made a huge difference with this girl. If you want some pics of how I did it, shoot me a pm, and I'll be happy to show you how to do it!

    6. Oh yes, I wanted to ask about the skin color of your Riz there? Looks to be a lovely tan color but with pics it is hard to tell. Also did you get your wig? Is that it, I forgot to ask. Does your sister sell things, is that why she was a clothing model? That hat is so cute. I have to ask how you got it?

    7. She is so sweet!! I really want an Emma.

She is sooooooooo gorgeous!!! Well worth all the trouble you had to go through.

    8. Umaeril, she is tan skin, and her new wig just arrived this afternoon. I'm not as crazy about the wig itself as I hoped I would be, will probably order one from FunnyLori, she makes incredible Tibetan lamb wigs! My sis is pink hart, she sews gorgeous bjd clothes! You can find her goods on ebay!
Thanks DancingBee, I think she's just adorable!

Here's my girl with her new wig, playing in the last of the snow!

    9. I have my first MSD on order. A pink Roseanne. I was hoping the skin might match DIM but it sounds like that won't happen :P I am in love with Planetdoll bodies and Roseanne's face is so sweet. I can't wait to get her and blush her :)

Does anyone have photos of NY and the NP skin next to each other?

    10. She's gorgeous, Wally! The PD tan is such a lovely colour, and with those blue eyes and the colours of her outfit: WOW!

pixidance: congrats on getting your first MSD! You're right about the DiM and PD skin, it's not the best match, but I'm totally with you in being in love with the PD bodies, that's why I use them for DiM hybrids too.:)
I recently received my normal (yellow) Roseanne and Riz, and I think PD changed the normal to the earlier skintone, so the match is a little less good than with the body I bought at the beginning of 2011.
So, as far as I can tell from my last 2 orders, the PD normal pink skin is a slightly darker version of the NY skin. Both are more of a yellow than pink tone to me, both have some pink to them, the NP more, that's why it's darker. That's why, for me, the present NY skin is actually still a beter option for a DiM hybrid.

Rectification: If you're familiar with dollndoll normal: that is a 100% match to present PD Normal (Yellow).
I'll try to take a picture of the recent NY and NP for you this weekend. :)

Thing is, I've been so captivated by the DiM sculpts the past 2 years, which really only have a light pink tone, that I might also see PD resin differently than before I had DiM bjd's;).
With aging, the DiM skintone turns into a very nice creamy white colour, with slight pink and yellow undertones. That's why I guess the PD NY would be best: as it gets a little lighter over time as well, the match gets better. And I guess faster and maybe closer to DiM than the PD NP would.

    11. Interesting that the pink skin is actually darker... I look forward to your photos :D

Although, now I kinda wish I'd ordered the normal skin .. He color will be a special surprise when she arrives lol

    12. Okay, I'll do my best.:)
In the meantime: have you seen the pictures of the different skintones on the PD site? They're a bit hard to locate, but here's one of the places I managed to find them (by clicking on the picture of the 45 cm Dandy), it's the last picture: http://www.planetdoll.net/dandy.html

    13. Pixidance: Just discovered with daylight, that what I first thought was a doll that was sent in the wrong skintone (NP) by mistake, was probably the (changed?) normal (yellow) from the same time the PD normal pink was launched. (That, or the new dolls were also sent in the wrong skintone, but I don't think so).
Which means the new dolls and the one from 2012 are probably all the present Normal (Yellow) skintone, so sadly I can't take any comparison pics for you with Normal Pink after all.
From what I've seen in pictures though, I'm still guessing the PD normal pink is a pinker version of the present normal (yellow), and that would also still mean the PD normal (yellow) is a better option for a DiM hybrid.
I'd love to see your Roseanne when she arrives, that face of hers is just sooo cute, but also for seeing what the NP is like.

Oh, and I rectified what I wrote earlier about the Dollndoll match. If all three of my latest PD dolls are indeed the present normal (yellow), than its that skintone that's a 100% match for Dollndoll Normal skin.

    14. Interesting. I can't seem to find photos anywhere of the pink skin. I'll definitely post photos when I get her. I should start working on a dress and a wig :)

    15. Pixidance: It turned out I didn't have Normal Pink to take pictures of, but here's a comparison of the present PD normal (yellow) with a fairly new DiM faceplate:
irl all the colours are slightly darker, but it gives a pretty good idea of the match.
Together with the link I gave to the PD skintones in post #369 you might see why I think the NY is probably the best match for a PD-DiM hybrid.

    16. Thanks for the comparison and thanks for the link :) The DIM resin is such a pretty color. Too bad I don't like their body :) I love Roseanne too, though, so I'm not in a hurry to get a DIM head any time soon ;) Ugh, is my doll here yet?! The waiting is killing me and I've only been waiting since Thursday night. I can imagine it's only going to get worse from here :P

I just stumbled across this on a flickr forum group. Others might find it helpful

It's nice to see the NY and the NP right next to each other.

    17. pixidance: Thanks a lot for the great link to the heads (http://jupi0104.img.or.kr/color.jpg)!
Though I'm now still not 100% sure whether my dolls are in NY or NP, as they don't really match either colour in the image. They pretty much fall between the NY and NP...
But as the white isn't a true depiction either (irl it's definitely paper white), I'll see if I can work on that picture a bit to see if I can bring the skintones closer to what they look like irl.

      Edit: Here's my attempt:
Planetdoll WS, Normal (Yellow) and Normal Pink Riz heads
Top row is what I altered from the original bottom row.
It's still not perfect, but from this I'm now pretty sure my dolls are indeed normal (yellow)!

And I'm now even more curious about the match between PD Normal Pink and DiM resin! (Both on arrival and over time as both resins mellow.)

    18. THe mystery will shortly be solved! The shop I ordered my doll from actually had her IN STOCK so she's shipping tomorrow! Holy Moly, I'm excited :) I wonder if their pink skin is like Iplehouse peach gold? How old is your doll? I wonder how much the skin tone has changed on her?

    19. pixidance: Wow congrats!
The headcap of the doll in post #372 only arrived 2 weeks ago and hasn't changed at all yet, neither has the less than 1 year old complete doll you see in that same post, as it still matches the new headcap 100%.
The new doll's body was intended for a normal skinned head I'd ordered a year earlier, and the head for another body (a boy's), but I then noticed the change in skintones since my last order. So the doll has been stored away, until I knew what to do with her, as my plans didn't work out as I'd expected and I had to make some changes first.

    20. So, it sounds like their resin isn't very consistent... My doll should be here tomorrow :) I'm so excited! Thanks so much for all the info. How many planetdolls do you have?
