Planning your doll family? Did you have a plan? How did it work out?

Apr 22, 2010

    1. Hrm... interesting question. I am one who is filling the dolls to my characters. It's quite hard since it's hard to find the right bodies for them.. but my strategy is go with the first one I find... or ones. Then I save up accordingly. However if you find one that just came out and is limited then I go for that. And if anything I go for head's first since I have found bodies to be there for a while. I don't know if this is the "best" way to do this since I have only just recently got my first doll head and that was more on a whim hahaha. But the dolls I am putting effort into getting will all take a while to get. Slow and steady wins the race yeah?

    2. My incursion on the BJD field was very accidental and quick, I first must admit I wanted to have a videogame character (Sephiroth from Final Fantasy), so I made a mistake and I ordered my first doll at BuddyDoll believing it was a doll I had seeing on a picture long ago, then, I realized upon further examination than this was an E.I.D. super-hero from Iplehouse, so that plan when cold, and I decided to customize the doll I had to fit one of my favorite characters (invented by me in part, a Human version of the Transformers Starscream), then a time later the limited real skin UV protect E.I.D. "Kamau" was on sale, as I saw him I knew what character was for me (the Human Megatron I was waiting!), so, it was for a limited time, but thanks to the layaway payments I was able to buy him, then I buoyed for re-sale on my country a little "Song" from ResinSoul (I say little since all my other dolls have around 70cm, but Song it's only around 45cm), unfortunately, no one wanted to pay fr him, so I keep it and made of him another videogame character (The Homunculus, from "Shadow of Destiny / Memories" videogame), then a friend came back from one of he's trips to Japan and around Asia and gave me as a gift a E.I.D. "Chase" from IpleHouse (regular edition), and then, finally I was able to make my so long waited Sephiroth, then, I saw the DollsTown DSAM Orijean's body and went crazy about all the joints!, but the face-plates where not as nice as I would like them to be for my taste, they didn't match any character I could have done, on the other hand HZ-Company had some awesome heads, but I wasn't completely sure about the body since it looked to me a little ""rigid"" and whit no articulation, fortunately, DikaDoll was able to develop a 5-part-torso, highly articulated body than could suit any type of head (and all of my dolls have Dikadoll jointed hands, I just LOVE the articulation!), and using a HZ-Company head (vampire "Hui Ka" w/horns) and one of those wonderful Dikadoll bodies I was able to make a wonderful doll, that's up for sale too in my country, but things are tough in my here so until now no one has made a good offer for him (but I admit, even if he isn't any character in particular, it's design it's gorgeous)...then the rest it's old history, but mostly my dolls are based on videogame characters, my own characters, and only a few than are very but very beautiful are here "just because they look nice"...:)

    3. I started out with planning my doll family with great detail (characters, their relationship to others, background... etc) but I found that, especially with all the new releases, that it was really difficult to adhere to my plans. So I just started to choose the doll, and then the character, rather than vice versa. It's worked pretty well, although some characters have their own "mini-world".

    4. I originally bought Madison because I thought she was pretty. She still doesn't really have a backstory or anything. Lorelai (who is a Leeke Mabel and is in the mail to me) ended up becoming a rp character I have with my friends. I had the character in the works, but didn't know what I wanted her to look like. When I took another look at the doll when I had just paid her off, it just clicked and I realized that that is the way that Lorelai would look. So, when she comes in I am going to try and make her special amulet necklace and angel-like wings. Ainja will be next, but unfortantly the picture I had for her was of a doll I was wanting in the marketplace and someone bought her from under me, so I might have to change her looks, but she will be a MNF Miyu. The problem I have is that my character Fay is moddled after a Unoa, and my husband would never allow me to get one of those unless we sold our firstborn. XD Now its all about the rp, baby!

I will be getting a Bory boy and an Ani boy eventually, the Ani boy being Madison's twin. They don't really have any place in the rp, but most likely the Bory might be my representation of Lorelai's brother, only as a child.

    5. I got my first doll a PF Yoko, but since she was lonely I got her a PF Chou years later. Then I got a LF Ante, and for her I got LF Leah to be her friend. So I guess even though my plan is not really "planned" but I get a doll I like then I get a friend of the same type! :sweat

    6. Lets see... When I purchased my first doll, I knew I wanted a MSD. When I found out about the DZ Shouyo, I was petty ecstatic. Months later, I decided I wanted DZ Floy based on one of my D&D characters, but I held back. Then the limited DZ Shouyo 3 was released. After I ordered her, I decided that I wanted her to be one of the OC from my old writings. I then decided to build the group from those stories. I bought Chen and Cherry at the same time for that reason. I have one more OC that I want to do; however, I also want to use Floy for it. I ordered DZ Lotus back in May on a whim as a birthday gift for myself. I am modeling her after Hatsune Miku from Vocaloid2.

DZ Floy... You are still on my wishlist!

    7. For me, so far, it has been a mix.

I have future dolls planned out, but some of them surprise me.

For example... I went to buy a BBB Rachel when I surprisingly found a second hand one for cheaper. I had intended to buy one with a male body, but the second hand one was female.

I wanted to mod her, but after seeing her... I decided to add a new character in to my family, instead.

    8. I do have ideas on what kind of dolls I want as to sizes.
But the personalities come to me when I see a doll, I don't think up a character and then find a doll that suits to that character.
It depends on the doll's look what personality I'll give him or her.

    9. I've my characters planned for my dolls. I was originally going to get my main characters first, but minor characters have somehow managed to become dolls before I finish the mains. Some characters I have designed for certain dolls, though I don't know much about their personalities. But even so I don't think I could plan that part of them, my first boy's personality changed drastically once I got him in doll form. I just hope that the rest don't turn out like him XD

    10. My first BJD, a puki pong now named Mooble. Was bought because she's cute, pocket sized and I like dolls. Then I decided I wanted to do photstories, cause I like story writing, playing with dolls and photography. I thought it'd be hard to do photostories with just Mooble on her own so a few months later purchased Winter (LTF Ante) I had by then started planning the photostory characters that I'd need in the next few months when I could buy them. So planning started mainly after I purchased Winter. I also just am kinda addicted already, I blame DoA :P

I then needed an elf girl. Who was good at posing. So I decided to save up and buy a MNF. I ended up buying Lishe, even though she doesn't have the ears, but her face is perfect for the character, and I sculpt a lot so I am going to attempt to mod her some elf ears.

I have a list of characters that will soon/someday come (when I can afford them)

    11. I am planning my family still, my first doll is on the way and I already know who the youngster of the pack will be, but am undecided on the male--the original boy i was looking out will be a bit shorter than my girl i'm afraid, they may not match too well...but i have much time to plan it out!

However after this theme--I will probably be more of a *oooh pretties* random shopper, since that's usually how i am. :P

    12. i usually plan with the characters i already have. sometimes there is a new addition cuz i want the DOLL so i have to make it a character that'll fit with the others :)
and it needs to have a character before it gets here or i dunno why, but i cant bound with it :/

    13. When I bought Zoe, I really didn't have a type in mind. The personality just came to me. When I got Saber, I changed her personality a bit from the original character to play off Zoe more.

I've won ALNA who should arrive in about a month if all goes well. Already know what role/personality she will play. I've considered a few others as well and usually figure out what personality/role they would have if I got them. Not being able to find where they fit in demotivates me from picking specific dollfies.

    14. I don't plan at all. Unless you count resisting impulse buying doll by deciding, for example " 2 boys and 2 girls that size is enough, I don't need any more."

Mostly, I sees them, I likes them, I can afford them, I gets them, unless I already have a glut of that size (space is an issue too). There's no plan to it and they just slot into the gang as and where as I "get to know" them.

I may refer to them as my resin "family", but they aren't all related to one-another and I have little or no idea whether they have sisters, brothers, cousins etc until one of them turns up and the relationship becomes apparent.

    15. I have three different stories that I'm planning from. Four characters from one (Illayna, Abudai, Dareth, and Neth.) , two from another (Holly and Ivy) , and then one from another (Warada). So yes... I am trying to plan out a family based from stories I'm writing, weither I get them or not.

    16. I'm one of those that don't plan. If a doll grabs me so hard I have to have it, I buy it. XD; The doll inevitably ends up deciding on a personality for itself. I find this way works well for me, but I can understand how people wouldn't be able to do it.

    17. I don´t plan either, sometimes I´m thinking if I someday buy this but I buy that what it sell and what look nice XDDD I´ve never regret what I have buyed^^

    18. For my first doll, I just bought the one i like best. After that I thought of a simple story and flesh out the character from there, and then sort of plan out a list of future characters that could be filled in depending on if I come across those I liked. I even went to set a sort of limit on the number of dolls to get, like 2 tinies 2 msds, 2 sd for my future family... Right now I am already waiting for one tiny, and have plan to get another which I already have a sculpt in mind... until I saw the new Crobidoll Silver Ring tiny... so my "limit" of 2 is well... have to be expanded to 3 or so... and there goes my so called planning. lol

Now I just keep both my story and my "limits" open lolz. My story is still there, but I'm keeping it flexible to accommodate any future dolls I may come across~ so if I see a doll that "fit" a pre-listed character from my story, then good. If not, it is also flexible enough to accommodate a new, totally unexpected sculpt and character. XD

    19. After my first doll, I tend to adopt dolls who need a home.

    20. I have my doll family planned out in advance, but usually I see a scult I would like to have and come up with a character to fit the scult, while every so often I'll decide that one of my dolls will need a friend or lover I'll look for a doll to fit the character I need. Right now I only have my two boys but I have several other dolls planned that fit in their storyline and some that don't. My planned family always seems to be growing though, so I need to start working on catching up.
