Playing Vs. Collector Mentality

May 12, 2007

    1. Well I guess I can be both, really. Just like my roleplay characters, my dolls (who will be my roleplay characters lol) will have their time to interact and then times when they just sit there.

But yes, just like everyone else have said, I like to makeup for the money I spent on my doll by doing photoshoots with him and making clothes, etc. b/c as much as a doll might look pretty as a work of art, but if it has the ability to move it's limbs and ability to change clothes, eyes, hair, etc. I think I'd play with them. XD

    2. Though this may sound harsh to any other dolls I get but I will always take extra care of my first dollie. I dont want anything to happen to any of them but Im not going to go to lengths where I wont play with them, dress them and photograph them

    3. Honestly Pyrope, taking extra care of you first dollie over the others, they might develop middle child syndrome!!

    4. I have to play with mine! In my experience the dolls are a lot more sturdy than I originally thought. I like being able to stick them in trees, or the ocean, or have them climbing on things. I know I've given one or two people panic attacks when posing my limited boys in precarious positions but I figure, I worked hard for them and I want to have fun with them. If their paint gets chipped, I'll fix it. If they get a little dirty, so what?! That's just me. I think any way a person chooses to enjoy their expensive toys is fine. I try very hard to remember to ask before touching or picking up someone elses' doll. Especially since I'm a chin tilter! I go right for the face to see it from different angles! :)

    5. Both of my boys have custom face-ups and I believe ANY BJD owner has poured tons of money into their dolls. Just our boys alone (Not counting clothes, shoes, wigs, face-ups, eyes etc...) it was over $1000
My sister and I look at it this way...We didnt spend over $2000 on a doll just so that we could be the only ones to look at it behind a glass case. Our boys come every where with us. From places like Wal-mart to when we go out to eat.
Now I never plan on selling my boy and neither does my sister so I dont really know about the value price now that they've been played with but I'm sure its just the same as an unplayed with BJD so long as they are still in good quality and shape. IE: Nothing busted or damaged at the time of sale.

    6. I'd have to say player as well.
I don't buy any toys that I don't intend to play with regardless of how much they cost.
*Gasp!* I read and reread my comic books too. =D

I can't honestly say who, if any, of my guys are limiteds or Ooaks, or even what I paid for anyone.
Lol, I have enough trouble just remembering which company they came from, and what was their original sculpt name.
I guess none of that information is very important to me, especially since I have no intention of ever selling anyone.

The only one I know of, off the top of my head, is Lue's brother, Luka.
He is a Ooak Volks Kohaku, his face-up is done in pale colors and he has white eyelashes.
I still have all the pieces of his Ooak outfit, although he never wears it, he much prefers a suit and tie. ;D

Then there is also Salem, my FCS, who is a volks Sunlight skin Kohaku.
I guess he would be considered fairly rare, since I haven't seen or heard of any other sunlight skinned ones.

Salem and Luka both get played with, posed and dressed as much as the rest of my guys.
While they might not get cuddled as much as some of the others, that has more to do with their personality, and my relationship with them, than their face-up or value. ^_^

Oh, sun exposure isn't a problem for us, as all the windows in the house have that special film to block out the damaging rays.
My room, which is where everyone mostly stays, has shoji screens over the windows as well as the film.
The shoji stay closed pretty much all the time, since I'm not fond of the sunlight either. ;D

    7. Play is more for the plastic 1/6 crowd but the Obitsu 60 gets areound quite a bit. I'm more gentle with the resins but I've taken everyone out and about at least once.

Most of my play with the big dolls is changing clothes and posing for photo stories, the Littles get moved around quite a bit and have acted out a few stories.

    8. I don't if "play" is a word I would use with what I enjoy doing with these wonderful personalities. I create lives, jobs, friends, loves, and catalog these with picture stories I sometimes share. Once I feel confident enough in the stories and my pics I will share here.

    9. When I first got Yuki..especially after his head came back with his gorgeous face up..I was kind of scared to play with him..scared that he'd get scuffs..I mean..eventhough he was expensive..500 dollars is a lot of money to me..I love him to death. And what makes me happy is playing with him, taking awesome pics of him, and carrying him places with me. I love taking him out into public. In the past few weeks, he scuffed himself and I freaked and tried to sand it out and it kind of bothers me. But if worse comes to worse I'll get him sanded and fixed. But what I love most about the dolls is that you CAN take them places with you. Besides..I don't think he'd be very happy with me if I didn't take him anywhere. I don't have him out every single day..especially once school/work starts up. Maybe on the weekends and a few times a week I'll have him out with me. ^_^

    10. I'd have to say I play with them ... but carefully. When I was 5 years old and got my first porcelain doll, I carefully played with her too. (she's still in beautiful condition, even with a few hairs out of place.) You don't have to rough and tumble throw them around to play. But as far as keeping them in a glass case... not worth it to me. light wear from gentle play hardly harms them. If I had VERY pricy limiteds, I would collect and display only. BUT I doubt I'll ever go that way. I like playing with them too much. and while I prefer to be gentle with them, I don't want to fear a light spot or scratch.

    11. Hmm, from everything I've seen on Y!J, even the "used condition," played-with, documentation-free, re-painted, imperfect, roughed-up, over-sprayed, chipped(!) :o popular LE Volks heads go for ridiculous quantities of money *_* . Having a body or not hardly seems to make a difference. You'd think strict collectors would avoid those, but *someone* is still bidding up those prices!

Anyway, since I'm buying a Volks LE head to go on a body that wasn't hers to begin with, I guess I'm automatically in the "play" category.

I have wound up "collecting" 1/6 scale dolls, but those especially get played with (the poor things). Most (not all) do sit behind glass or in a dark room when they aren't being forced to wear the latest and greatest, though.

    12. Regardless of whether I try to buy for investment or not, I always wind up taking the doll out of the box and playing with her. I think there has only been one time that I haven't done that and it was because I didn't bond with her when she arrived. Otherwise, they all become
play" dolls even though play might mean just redressing and the doll sitting on a shelf where I can see her.

    13. I play with my doll. I am a collector (Breyer horses FTW!), but I didn't buy my doll to be collected. I became interested in BJD's because of the ability to completely customize them. I think they're meant to be a bit more hands-on than other more fragile dolls that are meant for collecting.

I also didn't buy him with the intent of someday selling him, so I don't really think about his value depreciating when I play with him. He's my doll, I'll do what I want with him, and love him regardless of what happens to him.

Similarly, if I were to buy a limited or one-off doll, I think I'd play with it the same way I play with my standard El. The way I see it, I spent all this money on this doll, but it's still my doll, so I have the right to do whatever I want with it. Even if it were to be damaged in some way, i.e. a body part chipping or part of a valuable face-up coming off, I'd still love it as my doll. It might lose value on the market, but not in my heart (lol, cheesy).

    14. I am definitely more of a 'player' than a collector; though, in the strictest sense I'm both. When I finally decided to 'adopt' Celeste I got her in kit form - so I was the one to string her, give her her face-ups, and do everything to her. She's my baby girl, and she shows it. All of my kids do, but I am a bit 'easier' on Kalinx simply because I find my mini sized kids much easier to tote around then his hefty SD sized one.:sweat

Figure, if I'm going to spend the money on them, then I might as well enjoy them...I 'play' with my laptop all the time, and it cost three times as much as my most expensive. And if it breaks, which it will eventually from wear and tear, I'll replace it - like many, I don't buy my dolls based on resale value, I buy them because they speak to me. My porcelain dolls are pretty dust collectors only because they were gifts from family who have passed away.

      :sweat *hops off podium*

    15. i dont want any limiteds or overly expensive dolls because i know im more of a 'player' and they would be such a waste for me; i love to design and change and mess with things, so an expensive pretty doll is not my thing ^^;

to be honest i dont have many other possesions except for alot of manga and a few figureines...dolls are my source of entertainment XD (asides from the net)

    16. I see it as if I'm going to spend my hard earned money on something, I'm going to get my enjoyment out of it. I play with all my dolls, whether they be of a higher value or not. I'm careful with my dolls but I don't expect them to last forever, so I enjoy them while I can.

Some people have varying types of enjoyment for their collections. My SIL keeps all her dolls in their boxes, and that's how she enjoys them. I think it just depends on the person.

    17. Yes. Baron has issues with keeping his head in one piece, I will admit. But when he's fixed, I play with him. About the only thing I do not do is sleep with him, or swing him about by the ankles like I do my girls.

But he's my man. He's a cosplay prop, and he photographs wonderfully. Why would I *not* play with him? Nothing lasts forever.

    18. I would rather stay away from anything that is extreamly expensive (like, thousands) I am the kind of person that is terrified of harming their dolls (but plays with them anyway.....) and I think I'd go insane if I had to tip toe around an artist BJD.

    19. After having collected many dolls for years, amonmg which very sough-after, limited ones, I've lost interest in dolls that I have to keep behind glass for fear of diminishing value.
I don't buy BJD's for their value (heck, I'd like it better if they were free ;) ).

There are a few limiteds I really like, though. But some of them I will never own due to value. I don't want to spend thousands on one doll, not if there is som much to get for my other dollies.
If I were ever to obtain such a valuable doll, I plan to play with it. Gently :)

    20. I have a ton of porcelain dolls given to me over the span of my childhood and I was always told that they were for looking at not touching by my parents. Many of them are still on display in the box. I always feel sorry for them in a way like they will never get to be used what they were intended for. When I told my mom I intended to get a BJD she thought it was a great idea and told me it would look great in a display case next to my porcelain dolls. I tried to explain to her that I was purchasing it for play and she thought I was outta my mind. So I guess it really depends on the individual. Though regardless of what she says I will play with mine.
