Posability?

Feb 20, 2010

    1. Shinydoll is really impressive. I was really shocked by how well they pose. I don't see how they could disappoint you if you are looking for great realistic looking poses.

    2. Double jointed MSD from Dollzone:

He also stands like a rock....I never have any problems getting him to stand

      MNF Fairyland:

Also a great poser, but I find him a little more difficult to stand then the DZ....it migt just be because he's a little looser strung >_>

Visual wise my MNF looks more natural then the DZ double jointed body...probably because of the rounded knees and elbows where the double jointed ones from DZ have that sharp angle to them.

I do think though that it takes a bit of work to learn to handle each dolls particular 'quirk' when it comes to posing. For instance if I wanted the same pose for both of my boys it would take positioning them in subtle different ways to acomplish the same pose, it just has to do with their joints being a little different. ^_^

EDIT: Also wanted to add this one more picture on how lovely the DZ Dolls are ^_^

    3. I wholeheartedly look forward to recieving my Ringdoll mini, and a huge part of it is from the examples of how incredibly well they pose. They have great balance, smooth lines, and natural looking joints, but their super slim figures is a case of YMMV. They are kind of scrawny next to MNF and DZ, but that totally worked for my girl. The price didn't hurt either!

As far as I'm concerned, even a generically crap poser can work very well with the wonders of suading and wiring. My simple single jointed tinies from RS and BBB can now stand like rocks and hold a nuch braoder range of poses after restringing and suadeing them both.

They don't hold a candle to my friend's LittleFee Flora, though, who can stand on a single hand, sideways. It's pretty awesome.

    4. Posability is important to me but I like the joints to look lifelike, any thought on which makes have the most lifelike looking joints when posed.

    5. Though far from perfect in some other aspects, the most posable 60 cm. doll body I have is an Angel of dream girl body (with female soom super gem feet though)... It is oddly enough the cheapest as well. The others I have include Soom Super gem male/female bodies, Delf male and female, Sr. Delf male and female and ssr. Delf, volks female SD a dollshe and a Teenage ringdoll. I was dazed and amazed. The male angel of dream bodies though, is in my opinion the least posable I ever had my hands on.

    6. Thanks for all the input! Options options... From the photos I can find, ShinyDoll still seems to be the best in this department. Dollshe DSAM35s also looks promising, but unfortunately i'm not looking for a male doll. They don't seem to have females. >_>

Also found it intriguing that two people mentioned DD 2. That's the model I'm having trouble with. Specifically, the hip joints don't pose well enough for me. It only moves in 1 direction: forward and back. It's impossible to do poses like cross legged, seiza etc.

    7. Well here's a suggestion, Dollmore Model Dolls are fairly posable not sure what sort of poses you're looking for but if you want "model" type poses or fairly graceful poses, they are pretty nice :3 just don't expect them to be contortionists lol

    8. Volks dolls have wonderful smooth poses. Absolutely the best. I favor the SD16 girl and boy bodies a lot. Your question is very hard to answer since we will hardly come to a consensus here. ~Gus

    9. I was planning on getting a flexi2 body from Domuya, but now you guys make me think that I need to get something with more stability... unless the 2nd body is better than the 1st? On the website it says that it is...

    10. Gus, I think it depends on the kind of body. A friend of mine has two Volks dolls and they only have a limited posing range. They stand OK, but when it comes to sitting, the legs have very limited capabilities, especcially her SD.

    11. I think it's subjective too, I find the Volks bodies to be varying, my YO body is amazing, the new SD 10 is OK, the old one made me nuts. The Flexi one that I have is interesting, but for me the Shinydoll is the most graceful and well balanced.

    12. That is why it is important to do research and ask around if you want your doll to have certain features.

    13. I think opinions on posability are not only subjective but limited to the dolls which one has had experience with. For example, I love my little Fairyland Pukisha with his tiny little double joints but know you can't generalise that all double jointed dolls are better posers as even the ulta-cheap Hujoo doll has a double joint and they're shocking posers (a definate case of you get what you pay for) ...but that's just what I've experienced in that particular area. In the end it comes down to the types of poses you want to recreate vs. the style of doll you prefer and what you can afford / are willing to pay. I don't think there would be anyone here who has personally experienced every single variety of joint on every brand of doll out there anyway and even if there was, their opinion would be clouded by what they believe makes for good posability vs aesthetics vs price.

    14. the new dollzone double jointed dolls do pretty well, i have to restring mine though now that I think about it... mine are orgininal but they still pose well

    15. Do any of you feel as though any of your dolls have particularly nice elbow or shoulder joints?

For example, I don't think Shinydoll has a double-jointed elbow, but I haven't read any complaints.
I saw someone with a small Planetdoll whose elbows locked for poseability.

    16. And what about those extra shoulder caps some dolls have? Do they really affect the range of motion, etc. ?

    17. Shinydoll doesn't have a double-jointed elbow. The engineering is actually even better than double-joints. Here, check this out.

      http://homepage3.nifty.com/doi-midori/ShinyDoll/index.html

If just these few pics don't show that the Thaasa body is truly the ultimate best currently, then other searches on posing threads will.

And about shoulder caps, are you referring to the joint between the shoulder and the arm directly? My Blue Blood doll has those. It does affect the range of motion a bit, yes, and extends it slightly. (For example, BBD can touch their own faces -- nose, lips, chin -- no problem. One of the first tests that can be done for range of posability for arms on any doll is to see if they can touch their face AND hold it without any assistance. If it can do this, I would already consider it note worthy. Most dolls cannot on the modern market cannot do this, though improvements are being made all the time.

    18. Yes, that was the extra shoulder piece I was referring to, thank you so much for answering!

    19. Slender dolls (DSAM, Shinydoll, SDC, SD17, Graffiti) can bend & fold themselves up better than thicker ones. But you would be surprised how much yoga the Iplehouse EID Superhero body can do. Nobody expects a bulky beefcake to be able to do anything besides stand up.... but he has been seen twisting, balancing, doing Russian splits... :fangirl: He is a remarkable 3-kilogram chunk of engineering. Although he is difficult to handle, with practice you can get his poses to look extremely natural.

      Yes to both!

Volks SDCute Boy (44cm) and SD16 Boy (65cm) both have "shoulder caps", like rotator cuffs. I find they do allow a greater range of motion.... you don't have to dislocate the shoulder, or expose a big gap, to achieve more extreme poses. The caps do disrupt the lines of the doll's sculpture, though (which is a shame for the voluptuously-muscled SD16 & his beautiful arms).

Both Volks SDGraffiti (62cm) & SD17 (65cm) have marvellous streamlined elbow & knee joints. For knees: When they kneel, there's no sharp protruding peanut-joint, and you aren't looking down a huge gap down into his leg-piece; the peanut covers the joint smoothly. For elbows: when they bring their hands to their faces, the elbow joint also doesn't stick out or leave a big hole. And, if he isn't wearing thick sleeves, the elbow joint can lock (gently) into position.

Both of those bodies also have excellent locking back/waist/chest joints-- so they can slouch in THE most realistic way, shift thieir weight to one hip while standing, hug their knees up against their chests, etc. Qualadris did this purely awesome posing-expo thread with an SDGraffiti body here, check him out:

      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=353318

He looks like he's dancing! (And then meditating, and then praying, and then falling, and then slouching, and then cruising suavely for chicks...)

    20. Jenny Nemesis: Oh my goodness those Qualadris's photos ARE amazing! Thank you for your response. I love that the peanut gap- hole was covered up too, that's something that I've always found off-putting, although I always felt it was worthwhile compromise.
