Posability?

Feb 20, 2010

    1. The Shinydoll Thassa II body is, IMO, the best and most natural looking poser around. The joints look very smooth, no big gaps or anything when the elbows & knees are bent. Shinydoll also also makes the Yo sized Pricco body, and now makes the MSD sized Fragille body, so those that prefer smaller sized dolls can experience the joys of Shinydoll posability. Seriously, these dolls WILL spoil you with how easily they hold the most difficult of poses!

    2. I'm the one who bought the Volks SDGr body from Qualadris, and I am impressed. Without trouble, I could get him to sit (back rested against a wall) slouched with his arms around his knees. Amazing poser. :aheartbea

    3. I like playing with my dolls a lot. And by this, I mean I like to make them do acrobatic poses. But that's asking for too much! So at the minimum, they should be able to do (and hold!) natural poses while I photograph them. If they can't, then we'll have bonding issues and soon enough, I'll be re-homing him.

I think size (i.e. weight) plays a large part on the "posability" of dolls. It's easier to pose the smaller-sized (tinies/minis) dolls compared to their 1/3-sized counterparts.

For tinies/minis, I'm hopelessly biased with Fairyland. I think hands-down, they produce the best-engineered bodies for these sizes. Here's a sample of how good of a poser my Littlefee is.

For 1/3-sized dolls, as posted by JennyNemesis, my ex-headless Volks SDGr body was my best poser. But the posing abilities come at a hefty price ;)

Double-jointed (or more) joints doesn't always guarantee better posing. They always have to have a locking mechanism to ensure that each piece will stay in desired positions. I've handled other bodies with double-joints and they were so-so at best. Single-joints with KIPS/suede even beat them.

If we want a doll with human-like posing abilities, then I think we'd be looking at more joints especially in the torso area. I think the Dollshe DSAM 32 or 35 is a monster poser but the heavily jointed torso is not for everyone. Aesthetics, which is something very subjective, plays a big part on how we choose dolls. I think in this BJD business, designers will always balance the number of joints vs the whole look.

No matter what, there are a lot of methods that could greatly improve the posing abilities of a doll - Re-stringing, sueding, wiring, KIPS. If all else fails, and you still want a good poser, then that's the time for hybrids.

    4. Does anyone have any pics of their Dollshe DSAM32 or 35 body doing poses?.....would be kinda interesting to see....please.:)

    5. I am unsure if there has been a similar post to this, if there has, sorry!

I now have a few dolls from various companies but I am still unsure which of my dolls have the best movement.

My 70cm from Angell Studio came with little removable sillicon circles in the joints, to prevent slipping out of the pose I guess? With my illnesses, I'm actually too weak to play and test him out at the moment! :(

My dolls that are double jointed are either kicky or they wobble (I have no idea how to loosen strings though) ((more playing I guess!)) but they definitely have more movement.

My dream doll (which is finally mine!) LE Dollmore Dollpire Kid Boy - Shiloh poses alright, but I thought he would pose much better :|

My Puki Puki's joints amaze me, they are really flexible. Are the bigger dolls from Fairy Land just as flexible?

And the cheapest body I have, from Fantasy Doll, I actually find he poses the best! How does that work out??? :doh

I've also discovered that posing (for me) depends on the clothes too, my 70cm boy's pants have to be unzipped just so he can sit down LOL (this is just common sense) but ANYWAYS.....

--- I would really love to know which of your dolls (and their companies) pose the best!

      ~Sarah V

    6. I would have to say that l realy love fairyland's dolls they pose the best.

    7. Thank you very much Captin Janeway :) I love my Puki Puki - their larger dolls have such cute faces too, good to know they pose well!
      ~Sarah V

    8. yep fairyland is the best

    9. Thanks nekomode13 :) any particular size from fairyland?
      ~Sarah V

    10. The most popular FL sizes are their puki (which you have!) Littlefee & Minifee.
From looking at your dolls it looks like you definitely need a Littlefee which are
25cm;) YOSD is a great size and LTF's pose beautifully.
I have the new FL Feeple65 Chloe, and she is absolutely gorgeous, honestly
Fairylands resin is my Favorite next to my Volks heads. The smoothness &
texture/weight is really lovely. But, I would say that she takes a bit of effort
to pose....not because she doesn't pose well...but her joints are really different
and it's taking me a bit of time to "learn" how everything works. She's actually
been without one of her calfs for two days because it came out/off and I had
to read the manual to get it back on *lol* (but the instructions were very clear!)

Anyhow my vote would be for the LTF:D IMO they are the perfect size and would
sort of complete your doll family, size-wise anyhow!

    11. Shinydolls pose the best for me! The have an SD sized body called the Thaasa, slim MSD called Fragille, and Yo sized body called Pricco. All three pose very well but I think the Thaasa poses the best. Mine can do absolutely natural looking and difficult poses with very little effort on my part, and I'm no good at posing dolls, lol!

    12. I feel like an outsider because I don't have any Fairyland dolls. xD
Both my Lahoo (DoD) and Lloyd (DiM) are single jointed and I find they pose very well.
I don't really have anything to compare them to but, in my opinion, they work great.
Yes, I actually like the Doll in Mind Love body. So many people say they don't do anything, but I don't really see a problem.

But if you want a doll with good head motion, do not get a DiM body. Dream of Doll is much better in that case.
But he also stays slouched much nicer than my DoD body (until he snaps back and his head cap goes flying across the room).
I guess every body has its advantages, depending on how it's strung and everything. xD
I'm sorry I'm not much of a help. I need more experience. Bottom line, I really like both Dream of Doll and Doll in Mind posing.

    13. Thanks Lula78! Your comment really helped :D I have the sweetest little dress (for the YOSD I am yet to buy!) I am really thinking I will go for a Littlefee now :) PLUS they have the cutest faces <3

    14. Although, I'm not fond of super posers, in my experience the best at posing is Fairyland. My Ex-Little Fee could bend his knees and sit on them, bend his ankles, bend at the elbow, shoulder, and wrist, and it looked completely natural. And he could stand on one leg with his arms out. o.O which is pretty scary.

    15. My best poser is my Loongsoul SD girl. Mid-range in price, great quality.

    16. Which brand, doll, body do you think is the best poser? Have you ever done a comparison between your dolls? Who or what company do you think wins the pose off?

I'm new to bjd so this info would be great to know! Also I just think it'd be kinda fun to find out!

I personally love how my Angell Studio SD poses but I have nothing to compare her to so i'm not sure how well she does compared to other companies.

    17. I would have to say that FairyLand dolls pose the best. I have almost all of the sizes, I don't have the smallest size. I have a lot of dolls but they are my favorite.

    18. Doll Leaves and Dollzone pose way better than anything I own, even minifees uvu I've done many a pose trials for others before too.

    19. My Puki Puki's joints amaze me, they are really flexible. Are the bigger dolls from Fairy Land just as flexible?

In my experience, yes. Fairyland have been hands-down the best posers

      for me.

    20. I'm partial to old-school, single-jointed dolls (My CPDelfs and Volks SD13s, for instance, as well as my older Fairyland MiniFees-) and being used to the way they balance and move, I typically don't have any trouble getting them into basic poses. To me, they're the easiest to work with, particularly if they're correctly strung, with plivered joints or KIPs disks. If I want to do anything "advanced" with them, wiring is the way to go.

Of the more "modern" dolls I have, my Doll Chateau guys (A Dolores on the A-03 body and a Pierre on the non-winged A-04) are the most graceful posers, by far. There's definitely a bit of a learning curve involved with them given the extra pieces, but once you figure out their center of gravity, get the proper elastic tension and know how to really leverage the flexibility of those extended joints, they're pretty amazingly elegant things. They make my Feeple65 Itals, the Soom SGs, my Volks SD17 and SDGr guys and my Pure-bodied Dollshe Hound look clumsy in comparison.

My *worst* complex-jointed dolls are my IpleHouse EID guys. Both the Superhero and Model bodies are gorgeous... just beautifully sculpted things... but even with the extra mobility joints, they pose about as well as rocks. It's a battle even to get them to sit up properly, much less hold more complex poses. I always say those guys are a great example of Form over Function. They're absolute eye-candy, but it comes at a price.
