Posed Doll Hands vs Poseable Doll Hands

Aug 20, 2015

    1. Personally I don't really like jointed hands. The joints are too "distracting" to me. I understand the appeal and wish that it didn't bother me, but I'll just have to do without.

    2. At the scale I collect, jointed hands aren't an option, but I think they look cool!

Plus, you don't have to carry around a dozen extra hands to a photoshoot and miss losing one.

    3. I adore jointed hands, but I'm terrible at posing them! And when I'm not doing anything specific with them they get all twisted. It's a bit annoying.
Regular hands are boring when you want to do photoshoots (unless the company offer many different types of hands like fairyland does), but so much easier to deal with for the rest of the time!

    4. I prefer fix-pose hands because I find them more aesthetically appealing. I think jointed hands are cool and do
own OT 1:6 jointed hands which I've never used, precisely because I don't like the aesthetics of them. I just thought
they were cool and purchased them based on that but I don't like looking at them. I think if I ever purchased resin
jointed hands, I would have to Photoshop the heck out of my photos in order to keep them on my dolls for photo-shoots.

I do enjoy looking at joints and some dolls are incredibly well engineered, but pretty-hands are one of my obsessions.
I couldn't live with my dolls having joints in their hands, I just don't find them pretty to look at. Cool and functional, yes.
Pretty (IMHO), no. In fact, the hands that I love the most and find the most beautiful of all my dolls are the ones that are the
least bit functional, are totally useless and very hard to photograph, but are truly tiny-works of art. They are beautiful
to look at IRL, but are a pain in the neck to do anything with because their fixed-posed with curled fingers. They are not
fists or gripping hands, they are just loosely curled at the fingers which makes them a royal pain in the gut, but so pretty to look at. (:

Edit: I wish the companies I own dolls from had more optional hands for the sculpts I own, but sadly they don't.
Maybe that's one of the reasons why I love 1:6, they generally come with quite a few optional pairs of hands
in different poses and some even have bendy-hands (which sound amazing but I'll probably never buy for I loathe
      rubber anything toy related).

    5. I think jointed hands are awesome much more expression

    6. I prefer the posed hands, both for aesthetics, and because I often feel like the last thing I'd need is MORE JOINTS to fiddle with when I'm trying to set one of my boys up, but I can certainly see the value in having jointed hands, if you have the patience for dealing with them when they're fiddly, and if you need your dolls to do/hold certain things for your photos.

    7. I have never seen the jointed hands in person. I do like the concept but I would need to see them and play with them a little to say which one I prefer more. For the moment I like the fixed hands just fine.

    8. I'm in the boat of not being all that crazy about jointed hands. While I appreciate the engineering behind them, I find their aesthetic to be far too jarring and clunky. The few times I have seen more elegant jointed hands, they were on very large dolls, far too large for my collection in any case. There are SO many fixed hand options available out there, many of which are sculpted just beautifully. Although the joints give many more options for realistic hand positions, I think the joints themselves essentially retract all that realism anyway, so it's a bit of a double edged sword. With careful posing, I think fixed hands lend themselves better to realistic photos, even if the positions are a little more limited.

    9. It depends! I have some stock hands that are so pretty I cannot fathom to replace with jointed hands. My Soom Amber and Souldoll Shiva both come to mind. Others just have nice hands but are super awkward and I'm tempted to boil them or replace with jointed hands.
I have jointed hands on my Dollfamily H Hui Yin and they are lovely and fun to pose. But again, it does depend on what doll in the long run. Or even the size. Like I would doubt I would ever buy YoSD sized jointed hands. Maybe MSD but that's still a strange point to work on in my mind.

    10. I love jointed hands, I would get some for my girl if I could find ones that fit properly and matched in resin tone. I plan on collecting mostly large sized dolls so it doesn't bug me proportion wise. But I think it might be "busy" to look at on tiny dolls. I also like magnetic hands that Fairyland makes, they have nice choices. I am personally too scared to boil my dolls hands or else I would pose them a bit more creatively.

    11. Jointed hands give me mixed feelings. I love how versatile they are and poseability but at the same time the tiny joints all bug me... Resin matching is also a potential issue...

    12. I'm playing with the idea of using a single jointed hand for a cybernetic prothesis, probably in a grey so I don't have to worry about color matching. I do like the look of the jointed hands and the joints themselves.

    13. I haven't had a pair of jointed hands at this point, but I tend to think they'd be too fussy to deal with so I'm not sure I'd invest in them. Many of the pairs I've seen don't look bad, but I have little time to spend with my dolls so I tend to think if I got frustrated with posing them I'd be "over it" really quickly and not engage any effort into photos or the doll in general.

    14. I'll admit I've considered jointed hands for a couple of my dolls in the past, because in concept they really are pretty cool. However, I love the way the static hands I have look in photos and when I have my dolls posed on their shelf. There's definitely limitations to them, but there's limits to jointed ones, too, and right now I'm pretty happy with most of the ones I have, and will be reshaping the one set I don't like. (Plus, I have or can get extras for some of them, too, which opens up more poses I can have them doing.)

    15. At first, when I was brand new, I thought they looked a little frightening. Some of my friends' dolls have jointed hands, and they are really fun! I've gotten over the odd look of them, and I want some for my current WIP doll, Impldoll Martin. The next large purchase I am planning will be an Impldoll male Idol body. They now offer jointed hands, so I will buy those as well. He will play guitar, so for him to hold it well, the jointed hands will be very useful. I plan to put very thin wires through them so they can hold poses better, but I will have to try it to know if that will work. He will have the default hands as well, so I am sure he will have at least a few changes.

I have a couple other dolls that I would never want to have jointed hands, I like the ones they have. I think it's great Fairyland offers different posed hands, that's so fun! The magnets make them an easy switch. Doll love offers different posed hands for their yosd size line. I didn't order extra hands for my Doll Love girl and immediately regretted it. After she came home, I was glad I didn't because they would be so hard to change. I would have been wasting money to buy extras.

So, I think it's neat that it's an option with more companies by the day, but I understand that their odd appearance can be distracting. Attitudes can change, and taste evolves, so I have learned to not ever tell myself I'll 'never' do something with my dolls, because it's going to be a sure thing that I will just turn around and do just that!

It would be nice if some one could post or we could make a list of companies that offer different posed or jointed hands. The only companies I know offer different posed hands are listed above. The companies I know offer jointed hands are Popodoll, Dika doll, and Impl doll. I am sure there are dozens more, but I don't know them.

    16. Yes, this would be a fantastic resource!

    17. I know that Magic Time offers both MSD and YoSD hands, and so does Doll Legend. Alice's Collection has a selection of jointed hands that might be a good place to use as a reference for starting a list.

    18. I don't like like the look of jointed hands... but I *do* think they are awesome!

They just wouldn't be right for my girl though

    19. I loooove jointed hands. I like how they look, I like the posability. I have two dolls with jointed hands, Dominic (SD) who is a Fantasy Doll with Doll Leaves jointed hands and Sophie (MSD) who is Illusion Spirit with same company jointed hands. I must say the Illusion Spirit hands are waaaay and I do mean way more posable. Dom's fingers and especially his thumb, tend to rotate, which is pretty annoying. The Illusion Spirit hands seem way more stable and less jumpy.

BUT! I notice I take a lot less pictures of these two (they are a couple, so often will be together) because I need to pose the hands every time. And it's harder to put them into difficult positions because once you've balanced the doll properly and you want to adjust the hands, they fall over. Frustration all around. I try to do it the other way around, but when I pose the doll, the arms and hands sometimes shift a bit and make the posed hand look unnatural again.

I'm contemplating buying the DC jointed hands for Andromeda, my DC Bella. They might pose less of a problem because of the one joint they have. On the other hand, I like the posed DC hands, so I'm just unsure.

Illusion Spirit posed hands are so clunky! The MSD ones are at least, I prefer the jointed hands shape, so I was glad I could replace the hands even though it can be a bother.

    20. I think the idea behind jointed hands is awesome, but I just can't bring myself to like the result. It's not so much that I mind joints, these are ball-jointed dolls after all so of course there will be joints and if they bothered me I wouldn't have a doll in the first place. On the other hand, seeing that many joints in such a small area is really distracting to me and takes away from the rest of the doll. I feel like it takes away some of that "alive" feeling that the dolls give and reminds me that they are, indeed, just dolls.

Plus, the hands are one of my favorite things to look at in dolls and I love seeing the different posed ones out there. I love Rain's hands and sometimes I catch myself just admiring them and how delicate they are. And while my other girl hasn't arrived here yet, I've seen plenty of photos of the hands she comes with too and I think I'll love them just as much. As limited as they may be for posing, there's just nothing that beats how delicate and pretty they are to me. Plus if anything, they're a reason to be a little more creative with the composition and poses in photoshoots!
