Question about neck sizes in general

Apr 7, 2022

    1. Hey guys! Good day!
I have a quick question with an example of a doll, it may not be a hybrid but thanks to a lovely person I was able to get the head name and body.
So my question is how big or small a difference can a neck measurement be for a head Sculpt?
I saw a sculpt that had a Doll Chateau body 11 whose neck is 5.5cm. The head that was used was a dollZone head with a neck measurement of 6.5cm. Although that is just a 1cm difference, it's not technically a hybrid correct? And also what would be the absolute limit of the neck that can be used? like a minifee head for example? yay or nay?
so I could actually buy that head and body and it would be alright?

    2. If you look at the doll from below you may see a small gap between the neck and the neck cup of the head, it personally wouldnt bother me but it depends on how you feel :) A "hybrid" usually just means a doll made from parts from different companies, you could technically put any head on any body that has enough space for the neck to fit, but it doesnt mean you would nessecarily be happy with how it looks.

My gut feeling is that it should be a nice hybrid if the head and body are the same scale, especially since dollzone and doll chateau have very similar art styles.

If you share the sculpt name someone who has those parts may be able to take some pictures for you

    3. Ultimately, a lot comes down to preferences in terms of style. I have an hybrid where there's a big difference between what's intended for the head (DZ Benjamin has a neck of 7.3cm) and the body (DC K-AA has a 5.5cm neck). Photos here if you want

To some people, the head probably looks too big, but it's nothing that bothers me. The worst 'problem' I've had with this hybrid is that the head tends to lean to the sides if moved because the space where the neck rests inside the head is a little too large. But I think it gives the doll a melancholy air that I like, and if it really bothered me, I could suede it with hot glue/use a silicon disk to reduce the problem.

But also, neck size isn't the only thing that determines if a hybrid 'works'. General proportions can be off even if the neck size is right. I would advice to also check if the head circumference of the head you want is close to that of the head intended for that body. And as said above, don't hesitate to ask! The photo reference sub-forum is the best place to ask if people can show what a certain hybrid would look like.

With this said, if it is an hybrid between a dollchateau K11 and a minifee that interests you, I can try to take a picture of something like that later (though keep in mind that minifee heads are special and need a neck connector to fit on other bodies)

    4. Genreally, if you want a body for a head that gives the same general impression as the body the head was made for you can just compare measurements. Neck size is one factor, but the over all size of the head and facial features matter as well. Compareing shoulder measurements can also give a clue to weather the head will look as intended on the body.

On the other hand, I have over the years seen a few examples of hybrids where an oversized head has been intentionally chosen to give a certain look (think the aesthetic of blythe dolls or the big headed maskcat tinies) and while that is certainly harder to do well, some people have pulled it off with super cute and undeniably unique dolls as a resault. So there is no hard rules about how far you can take it. If you can make it work, then it works.

In the end it's a matter of preference and mostly a question of what it is you want from your hybrid and how many workarounds you are willing to do. If it's just a matter if mecanical fit, you can always mod either the head, the body, or both.

The term "hybrid" simply means any doll with parts from more than one company, most commonly head from one maker and the body from another.
