Question: How did you come up with your doll's name?

Sep 29, 2013

    1. I tend to buy dolls with a character in mind. I know who I am looking for when I go doll shopping. The exception was Master Ring. I am a huge Star Wars junkie, and he's totally a Jedi Knight.

    2. My very first doll I kept saying her sculpt name wrong so I saw it as a sign that should be her name.
For the others, everytime I came across I name that liked I wrote it down.

    3. My first BJD had a name when I got her, and I couldn't bring myself to change it! For my second, a name came to mind when I saw her online, and it stuck once I got her. I'm waiting on a third doll, and I've been looking at baby name sites. There are a few names I have in mind, but I think I'm going to work on her face up before I decide one. I love looking for unusual names, because my own name is so common. I also feel like naming dolls will save any children I may have from getting totally bizarre names.

    4. I usually see a doll I like and a name comes to mind, or I'll come up with a general look and search through baby name sites for a name that I feel "fits" that look. It doesn't always work out, but I'm usually fairly decent at keeping the original names. At least, for my girls.

    5. Well.. I love reading books and my favorite character is Cameron Briel/Cambriel from Fallen =w= so thats where I got my doll's name

    6. Honestly, I don't have my doll yet, but her name was apparent from who she was going to be. Not a character, per se, i don't do that, but an aesthetic effect. She WAS Lux, because of the gold hair, the sunkissed pale features, and the faerie-esqu attitude I wanted from her.

So I guess her name was clear from her style?

    7. I'm often inspired by my favorite books, if a character calls my attention I will take that name for my doll^^ my dolls are not the characters from the book, though...somehow I bond better with them when they have a name that belongs to my favorite characters. And sometimes I just make it up or search in google. :P

    8. Depends some I name after my favorite characters, sometimes I name them according to a theme. I will also think of a back story, and see what’s suits them.

    9. I had SO MANY NAMES listed for my littlefee ante elf... I had a list of about 30 names that I was trying to figure out, when BAM... a name came to me that wasn't even on my list, thus Newt got her name ;)

Sent from the Vale of the Faeries!

    10. Wynter (AoD Qian) is a name of my main character from a fanfic I write with my wife. ♥ At first, I didn't want to do the fanfic, but she talked me into it. Now, I love it. Her soulmate is Marius (Her character) who is also the name of my Impldoll Chapman.

Arya, I love that name and it's from Game of Thrones, so when I got my Doll Leaves Emily, I took one look at her and she looked like an Arya to me.

I have a Doll Leaves Amara on her way to me, but I haven't named her yet.

    11. This one is fun!!!! I'll do it in order of when I got my dolls. :>

Ashera was the name of a character in a video game. I can't remember the video game, but the name just stuck with me and when I got my Iplehouse Isar, I chose that name for her after a long time of waffling around with different names.

Rondel is named after a type of sword, which his character is trained to use. In the story he's from, elves are like descended from organic constructs that were originally designed to be servants. They're very easy to train when they're young and Rondel was trained to be a guard.

Sayyid is a character of mine. My boyfriend gave me his name when I first made his character. I didn't know much about arabic naming customs, but my boyfriend did, so I just asked him to name this character and Sayyid Azfar Ali Mahdi was the name that worked. :)

Sevaal is a much older character of mine. His name was really just something that came to me, syllables that sounded cool together. I have no idea where it came from, but I love it.

Caim's name is interesting. His character got that name as a hand-me-down from another character in an indirect and weird way. He's named after a demon, though.

Bane was another case of getting a doll and making a character for it. His name was hard because I wanted it to be short and simple, but badass, like my friend's character Rue. It took a while and I waffled a lot between Zver and Bane, but I couldn't pronounce Zver, so I settled on Bane.

    12. Names are a big thing for me, so when I see a doll and a name doesnt immediately pop into my head, I dont think that one is the right one for me.
I really like asian names (mostly Japanese and Korean) so my dolls have a theme like that haha.

    13. My dolls who use Japanese name were named by my friend. I don't really know why he names or gives me possible name choices to choose. It looks like naming a human baby? :XD: But names like Fayy or Araazu, I just name them after my characters in my short novel. Somehow...not human language, I guess. And another two names like Adelar (Old German name) and Alaistair v. Rayleigh, this last one I name his last name after Rayleigh-Jeans Law from quantum mechanics class :D

    14. While waiting for my doll to arrive I went through all sorts of baby name sites to find her a name, however in the end I ended up using the feminine form of a name I heard from the TV that I thought was quite pretty. It was changed momentarily to something else after first receiving her, but then reverted back to the original name I chose as I had grown quite attached to it.

Currently she only has a first name, though I do plan on giving her a last name too when I can think of a decent enough one.

    15. Levi and Aoba are character dolls, so no naming troubles there.

Alma means "spirit" and "to nurture", and she has spirits bound to her. She is the embodiment of the forest. If the forest withers, she will die (and vice versa), so she must nurture and be nurtured.

Morgan and Lyrre are two magical boys named after instruments. Morgan is named so because he's the darker one, and his name is just "organ" with an "m" in front, because I thought haunting organ music best suited his character. Lyrre is the more hopeful and lighter one, and his name is "lyre" with an extra "r" (also pronounced as "leer" instead of like "liar") because the gentle plucks of a lyre in music best represent his character.

Bright the deertaur is named after a group of high point cards in the Japanese card game hanafuda. In the game there is also a card with a deer on it, as well as a boar and a butterfly, which make a hand. He also has a boar and a butterfly as companions in the forest.

Ambrose is an old dragon reborn into a young body. He put up a front of attitude because he doesn't want people to think he's weak just because he looks young, butin truth he did become much weaker after being reborn because of the age of his new body. His name is the masculine form of "ambrosia" which is a food or drink that grants immortality. "Ambrosia" is also a brand of custard in the UK, which gives a very subtle link to "Custard the Dragon", a children's poem about a cowardly dragon who grows to become brave, which I thought suited Ambrose well.

Undine is named so because she is a spirit of the lake and "undine" is the element of water.

I think my doll names over VERY carefully, haha.

    16. I take a lot of time deciding on names for characters/guilds/etc in games, but that's exclusively for "blank slate" characters (Etrian Odyssey is a good example); but I generally don't name my dolls. To me they technically already have names - I'm sure the designers have their own reasons for choosing their sculpt names, and I don't think that should just be ignored. (Although, I suppose if you create your own "character" with your doll with a sculpt simply "fitting" what you envision, it makes sense...but that's not something I do.)

However, there is one and only one doll that I have named thus far. I was doing a photo shoot with my Doll Love Evol, and while I was taking photos I saw a tiny beetle run across her face. I flicked it off, only to discover after looking through the photos that it was actually a teeny, tiny ladybug, perfectly in-scale! I kept one of the photos where it was on the side of her face. I decided in that moment to name her "Ladybird", since I think that variation makes a better name. Sadly the purpose of the photo shoot was to get in some photos before I sold her, so she is no longer with me.

    17. Before my dolls arrive I usually just carry around a book with me and write down any names I hear that I like.
Then when the doll arrives I look through the names and find one that suits them. :3
A lot of the time I've been looking at the sculpt pictures before they get here and decided on one that I like before they arrive. xD
So far I haven't had any names that I decided to change later so I'm pretty happy with my method of naming. :3

    18. I usually search out names with a meaning behind them and because I like myths alot they are usually from different kinds of myths. My boyfriend was already happy I had choosen names that were pronouncable, cause I usually have difficult names for my D&D characters :P

      Freyr is from Nordic Mythology:
Means "lord" in Old Norse. This was the name of a Norse god. He may have originally been called Yngvi, the name Freyr being originally his title. Freyr presided over fertility, sunlight and rain, and was the husband of the frost giantess Gerd.

Which fits him, since he is an elf and his clothes looks royal :)

      Sieglinde from German Mythology:
Derived from the Germanic elements sigu "victory" and linde "gentle, soft". Sieglinde was the mother of Siegfried in the Germanic saga the 'Nibelungenlied'.

Though she looks like a rebel, she has a soft heart, so it fits her too :)

    19. What a fun topic! This is nice seeing how people got their names!! So many different ideas.

My MSD's were named in part with names from favorite actors, and names that had twist to symbolize who/ what kind of characters they are.

Daryl Odessa (Named after Daryl Hannah), also appears like Daring Odyssey, because she's adventurous & beautiful.

Katarina Basil Freeman (Named after English actors Basil Rathborne and Martin Freeman) with the middle name as an initial it appears as B. Freeman = "Be a free man", because she's part of a resistance rebel group in England for her character story.

Even the ones I haven't gotten yet have names similar:
Guy Ford (Named after Harrison Ford)... His name is pretty self explanatory. Lol.

Herbert Bogart (named after Humphrey Bogart) who is a very Bogart kind of character. Semi mischievous.

My little Yo-Sd's were not as thought out, so I just named them whatever came to mind- since their story is different. Spice was named to go with my sisters doll Sugar. Like "sugar, spice & everything nice". My other doll was named Leelo, because I think she looks like a fish alien (that made me think of Lilo & Stitch). Just cute sounding short names.

    20. My girl is an elf and i wanted something feminine and earth themed and as i was looking at her stock pictures when i was ordering it just kind of popped in my head. She has not gotten a last name yet but I am working on it. Her name is Flora.
