Question: How did you come up with your doll's name?

Sep 29, 2013

    1. Most of my dolls' names I gave them before they arrived. Some I really had to think about, some just popped into my head and I knew I had to use them, even if I didn't initially like the name at all... My first doll, who I am finally parting ways with, I just couldn't come up with a name for! I ended up deciding her temporary name would be Eleana, but then I never came up with anything better and it stuck. Maybe that's why we never bonded, 'cause I never figured out her name... I dunno. But most of my other characters, Ian, Max (Maxine), Moss, Wren, Rot, Manna, Casper, Johanna, and Olivia (maybe some others I'm forgetting?) I had to think about their names a bit, but it was easy to figure out what worked right away. Then there are the dolls, not all of which I actualyl own, some are still on my wishlist and yet I can't help but name them this way... I just think of them, and a name smacks me in the brain and I'm like I don't even like that name, and then it smacks my brain again and I'm like Okay, okay! Examples: April (who was originally a boy when I named her, er, I mean, 'him', and who always got shit for having a girl's name...), Augustine (Ian's older sister), Naga (who is a naga), Harpy (who is a harpy), Fatty (who is very chubby), Buckwheat (okay, I actually love this name, but I didn't have to think about it, it just came to me like the others), and Julius (who won't be staying with me much longer)... Probably others, too, but I can't think of them...

Funny story about naming though... Ian, my second doll, I had a little trouble with because I liked a LOT of names for him! They were all similar, names like Liam, Logan, and (of course), Ian. I ended up narrowing it down to Logan or Ian, but I knew a boy named Logan and I didn't want to think about him every time I looked at my doll, so I went with Ian 'cause at the time the only Ian I knew was a very little boy in my neighborhood who I rarely even saw. When Ian finally arrived and I officially named him, I thought to myself, 'It would be weird if I ever ended up with a boyfriend named Ian, because I couldn't just re-name my doll! I'd have to give my boyfriend a nickname or something...' I was 13 at the time. When I was 15, I started going out with my first and current boyfriend, who THANK GOD, doesn't go by his birth name. His birth name is Ian. I did not know this when we first started going out, I just called him by the 'nickname' that everyone calls him by. So my 'prophecy' came true!

    2. When I ordered my doll I had a few names I wanted to call her but when she arrived none of them suited her. It took me a few days but eventually the name Clara came to me and it fit her.
Who knows what my next dolls will be called.

    3. I had a lot of trouble naming my first doll, a migidoll mir. I bought him because he has a very androgynous face (when blank) so I intended to make him a girl. I bought him with the face up, but when he came throughโ€ฆ..he just did NOT want to be a girl. It really fast forwarded my plans to get a girl doll! The name I chose for the girl was Namiko (I really like it for some reason). But since he did not want to be a girl, I had to switch. He is now Daisuke :)My little baby doll was soooooo much easier โ€“ s/he is a tree spirit, so I went for Mori (short for Moriko) which means โ€˜child of the forestโ€™And soo, my Yan should arrive! She will be Namiko :) I hope

    4. Well, my first doll was from Granado, and her sculpt is Fayette. Granado has these little stories they make for each of their dolls, which I had never even looked at until after I bought my doll. I just started at her for a while (her pics, cause she wasn't here yet) and some how the name just came to me. Titania. What's funny is, after I read her story. Her sculpt is supposed to be an actress and she plays Titania, King Oberon's wife from A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Oliver was a lot harder, though. I originally had his name Altair, from a book I read and it was supposed to mean something very sweet, but it didn't stick and didn't really fit him. After name hopping to similar names, I came across Oliver and that seemed perfect and he's been Oliver ever sense :)
I DZ Flower Babies I think are keeping their sculpt names. The names just seem very cute and fitting for these little guys.

    5. For Katie, it wasn't until I put her wig on that she named herself. A few days after that, I realised she was so much like a character I have (also called Katie) so it stuck.

    6. I just pick names that I like when I hear them...I mostly blame Osmosis Jones for my upcoming Bei's possible name (it's a toss up between two elf OC's..XD; ) I loved the name Shane for a girl after seeing the movie and welp..Yeah. It's either gonna be Shane or Vala (one of my OC's)

    7. My first and only doll was an impulse buy. He was just an LE head, and not even the head I was planning for, so after I ordered him, I realized that I didn't really want him. I came up with several names for him while he was being made, mostly fantasy names because he had elf ears. I didn't really invest myself into coming up with his character.

After finding a good body for him and modding his eyes, I decided on the name Artemis because 1) I had recently finished reading the Artemis Fowl series and had that name stuck in my mind, and 2) because my doll's sculpt is supposed to be a girl sculpt anyway. Now I love him to pieces. :D

I still had a hard time coming up with a character for him though until I decided that his last name would be Kingsleigh, making his name a play on Alice Kingsleigh from Alice in Wonderland. Now I have a clear direction for his backstory, wardrobe, and everything else.

One thing I've learned: If a name doesn't smack you in the head when you first open the box, patience is key!

    8. I named my first doll to go along with the theme of the fullset outfit she came with and it turned out to be perfect. My second one I liked the name the company gave her sculpt so I kept it with a minor alteration. My third, I named her something cutesy after her skintone because she was a "chocolate" skin doll, and my latest one was named in honor of my cat who passed away 10 months ago since she was painted up to look just like her.

I'm rather sporadic with names but I try to make them have some meaning to them.

    9. Sometimes I give my dolls name they just not fit into too. But today, I will tell about the little blue enyo. Her name is Lora. It is a spanish name (as the doll is made by the spainish artist irrealdoll), and since she also is blue, I thought about the blue and let her be my little heartbroken girl, ready to raise and fall. And raise. And fall. It fits her faceup with heart very well, and especially since she have the two white spots under the eyes.

    10. Congrats on your first doll Parapluie! I ordered my first doll the other month and already found a name for him. (even before I purchased him)

I like to create all these stories in my head that from time to time I like to build upon.
So for my first doll I didn't want to use any of my main characters, but I wanted him to fit into this world I've created.

His actual name came to me so randomly, I was at work and my boss was talking to someone and said a certain word. I literally had a light bulb moment.
His name is secrete for now, who knows it might change once I get him and do his face up, I'll just have to wait and see.

If you can't decide on a name I like to use "AKA" or "Code" followed buy a word that just defines/sums up the character e.g. Code Flower.
That helped me create one of my characters Flora Flower (yes she has a nature/plant theme >.<)

    11. MY first doll, I got the name because I bought him second hand and I felt really bad re-naming him! I ended up falling in love with the name

    12. Names come to my mind the moment i see the doll's picture online, or after I've imagined how I would like the doll to turn out. Oddly when I first saw an Image of my Peter that name was the first to struck me for him not knowing that that was even the name of the sculpt. :}
For the ones that are coming, I didn't order them till I knew who they were going to be so there names were quickly to be decided. Now I'll have to wait till Sarah, Perri, Buo and Addy are finally at home and hope they like there names. :)

And I still hope to one day to find a BJD I can call sumomo.:sumomo:

    13. I scrolled through list after list on baby naming websites until I found one that I thought suited her :) That's how it goes for my characters for most things.

    14. For me, there are two name methods.

For original characters, like my SDGr boy Charles, I usually create the character first before the doll (which is going to be the complex method).

I usually think of a concept for my character, and makes sure their names match well (Like their ethnicity, race, etc. or sometimes it is related to the story the character is in. Such as the girlfriend of Charles (A future SD13 girl), Alice is called Alice not because of her German background, but she is called Alice because the story I am creating is a Alice in Wonderland themed story, so I thought the girl should be Alice.

During the creation of Charles (The character), since the boy himself is French, I had to pick a name which is French, and I picked Charles because I wanted a character who gets called out by his name in different pronunciations, like the usual French sharl (That is how you read it right?), and the normal way you would read Charles. It kinda resembles how I go by both my English and Japanese pronunciation of my real name whenever I talk to anyone who speaks both Japanese and English.

And for canon characters, its simple. Just use their original names. Hizuru was a character originally from Towa no Quon, so she is Hizuru. There.

    15. One name "Nat" short for Natalie, came from my 9 year old. Ironically enough, I call her father "gnat". So, I thought that was great!

    16. I went from an establish character in a book (the last name) that was the type of character and stuffed it into this sites random re-namer... http://www.behindthename.com/
I kept doing it until it spat back some names that stuck with me lol...

Also one doll, every time I looked at her the name "Jessica" just popped into my head... as with the rest of her name over a few weeks O_o. So sometimes a name can just 'appear in your head'.

My dolls 'stage names' was to fit a theme... 'always changing' like a Chameleon... That's the stage name and the first names are nicknames based from it... ie. Cami, Cameron... etc.

lots of ways to get a name.

    17. I used to sketch characters I created but then I saw BJDs and thought...wow! it would be so cool if they were actually 3D...and voila! here I am. So characters first, doll second. If you can't think of a name you could always borrow one from somewhere else eg favorite manga, video game, novel, movie. Afterwards you can always rename him/her.

    18. My latest doll ( DM Trinity) was going to be called something like Judith-Anne, but she is named Friday 13th {The charmed} because she arrived that day. So now I call her Friday for short.

    19. If a doll is going to be a specific, already existent character, even if it's a character from videogames, anime, books, or simple from a story of mine or a roleplay character, it's going to get the character name, so it's easy. My incoming Reaa, that has to shell an OC of mine, has already a first and second name and a nickname too. On the other side, my Dikadoll Mian Mian still hasn't a name... his sculpt name stuck so tenaciously that I still call him Mian Mian and I cannot think of a better name -_-

    20. My Hound was a character from a story of mine, so his name, appearance, and personality were all set before I even got him! I was rather worried that when I got him, he wouldn't "fit" the existing character well...but he far exceeded my expectations! :) Anthoney (my Lud-N head) was also a character of mine.

My DC Agatha that's on the way took some searching. She was apart of a little side story I had going, but she didn't have a name yet. I settled on Calista though, I thought it was very ethereal and beautiful sounding, and I think it'll suit her well. We'll see!
