Question: How did you come up with your doll's name?

Sep 29, 2013

    1. My first doll remained nameless for years because I didn't know what to name her. I recently dug her out from under my bed and decided to get her a makeover. Along the way, I tried sounding out a few names for her, seeing what suits the vibe I get off of her. My starting point is always names that I generally like, but I don't draw names from specific mediums.

    2. Hmm... When I ordered my first doll...I tought about how he shall lool like and what name I want to give him..But when he arrived I just have to look at him and had a name which fits him much more <3
Same with the other ones : ) They have their own nature ..so the names comes with them.

    3. The first 2 dolls I ordered specifically b/c they fit characters.
The third I had no idea. I had to buy a lot of eyes and wigs for him and I got a certain combination and his name just clicked!

    4. My first 2 dolls I used babynames.com and looked up names by meaning to find the ones I felt suited them. My tiger girl I named Catarine, so I could be clever and call her Cat. We started calling her Kit Kat as a nickname, and that ended up sticking. My 4th was supposed to shell a character, so I named him after that character. That whole thing didn't pan out, so he's being redone, but he's keeping the name. My 5th I had a plan for, so I gave her a name that suited the style I was going to give her. Also did not pan out, but the name stuck. And my 6th and most recent also got a name via the babynames.com method, searching by meaning and finding a name that meant something, but also rolled off the tongue right and suited him.

It all depends on the circumstances surrounding the doll in question.

    5. I think I've posted in here before but I'm gonna do it again coz why not!

My first doll is called Yuki, when I was planning her I wanted to get her in white resin so named her snow. My doll family were gonna all be Japanese so I hopped on translate (and with help from a friend) got her name.

The same sort of thing goes for my other dolls.
My floating head is a winter event so he's called Fuyu
My twins I wanted to be something that works well together but we're opposites, sweet and savoury = amai and kobashi.
My 4 doll I named knowing she was more gothy and her brother more pastel/bright colours so I went for dusk and dawn. And so we have Yลซgure.
Then I have a little fox who is a young kitsune. I didn't know what to call him so I used the Japanese name of my fave fox Pokemon vulpix=Rokon.
My latest addition my fiancรฉ named. Don't know his process

I have got others in the pipe line I want and they are named already haha

    6. I named her the same way I name my characters.
What I do is...I think of the character, who I want them to be, what they are, who they are, and what they aren't, as well as what they will become. For example...

One of my characters is named Primrose Basa. She presents a strong front and on the outside very caustic and headstrong. Her words are sharp like thorns...much like the ones roses themselves have (prickles, I know >_>; but that's far less poetic.). But when it comes down to it- she's all bark and very little bite, she is after all, just a child. Her mind is weak and cannot keep up with her will and is easily swayed despite what she thinks. Ultimately, outside pressure from the world around her causes her to snap and she ends up relying on another to keep somewhat functional.

Primrose, in the language of flowers can mean "[FONT=&amp]Young Love, early youth, I can't live without you." A youth just beginning to grow cut down (mentally and spiritually speaking) before she really had the chance to flower, and becomes entirely dependent on another for emotional crutch and caretaker.
Her last name, Basa being the shortened form of babasagin. In my mother's native tongue, that means fragile. (The title of the story was Fragile Primrose, so it was a whole lot of me being really cheeky that day. Did I mention she isn't from a happy story yet?)

I did the same for my doll-the only exception being I didn't go make a backstory. I decided to name her Serene, because when I sit there and look at her, I am at peace.

    7. I always find naming really tricky... I used to always plan out the names for anything, but now I'm a big believer in waiting until they arrive. It was all influenced by a book I read, or maybe it was a TV show, shame I can't remember, but the quotation was along the lines of, "You haven't even met them yet and you're going to name them?" I think that when I finally get my first doll, they'll tell me their name all on their own once they're home with me :)

    8. I tend to find names that go with their character/story. For instance, Willow lives in the woods surrounded by trees...Willow Trees grow...

    9. I tend to come up with names before they arrive, as I like to determine the basics so I can prepare a few things for them before they're here. For Felicity, since her sculpt had been released around Valentine's Day, I originally wanted her name to be related to love, but none of the names fit. Still, I liked the idea of her name meaning something positive, since she was quickly becoming my own personal avatar and I wanted her to represent my journey toward finding my own happiness. Eventually, I came across the name Felicity, which means happiness and good fortune, and it just stuck in my mind. She certainly makes me feel happy when I see her. :aheartbea

As for Summer, she's essentially named after the actress Summer Glau, lol. I was trying to determine her name before she arrived, and I was watching a comedic review where they had mentioned her name. And I just go, that is so the name she would have! I've learned that if I'm still indecisive about a name, then it's not the right one. The right names always invoke a certain 'feel' to me, if that makes any sense, like, "Obviously that her name, it's been her name forever!" and if I try to come up with something else, it just feels like I'm saying random names.

I don't really bother with last names, since I don't need to use them.

    10. before i start collecting dolls ... i used to make up characters with their background stories and day dream about them :mwahaha ... and of course each character had a name in my mind ... that's how i came up with my dollies names ... also from animes
i also found this generator by accident ... http://fantasynamegenerators.com/

    11. I don't yet have either of my dolls, but I've loosely based characters for them already.

My first doll (arriving soon) is a girl with the background of being a fallen star. Fittingly, her name is Astrid, a name given to her by my boy doll when he arrives.

My boy has a strong personality already, even though he's not arrived. He studies astronomy, and sees the star falling, and sets out to collect it, only to find Astrid. He helps her with her task on Earth, teaching her about humanity and human life. He's the only one that can see she's a star, and that fit well with his name, Farouk, althrough he prefers the name Faro, which means beacon.

Sorry for getting away - they have quite the story already! ^^

    12. I've been customizing fashion dolls for a while and have never named them. The BJDs on their way, though? One had a name from the get go. He'll be named after a main character from something I've written. Now that I'm naming him, I'm sensing the beginning of a doll-naming trend, regardless of whether they're a pre-existing character of mine or not.

    13. I look at different websites for the names. My go to one is 20000-names.com (It can have some annoying ads on it though.) It was names for around the world and easy to search by meanings. I will pick a name for it's meaning and how it is spelt.

    14. I absolutely adore Jewish names and Hebrew in general, especially since I'm converting to Reform Judaism, so when I was running out of hope of seeing my MNF Mika in a reasonable amount of time I knew that I would have to call him Hope! However, in English Hope sounds too much like a girls name, so I went for Tikvah with is the Hebrew equivalent. Now I'm waiting for my second Mika and I am flipping through more names trying to decide what this new boy'll be called. I was thinking Mordecai, but I guess we'll just see haha

    15. Well I like old names I don't hear very often or mot at all...or from video games or books...

    16. Henry was an OC I had long before I bought the doll, but then when I got him in the mail I was like, OMG this doll IS Henry so it was like all of a sudden I had a rl version of this OC I had know forever :3

    17. My first doll's name is Dawn.
Dawn means "a beginning". I named her this because the is the start of my love for BJDs. This name also fits with her face up.

    18. As for the previous dolls ive collected I generally keep named their given as I receive them for the new hobby which is now BJD I generally try to pick character as well as a name to go with the doll before purchasing the doll

    19. I come up with names by the story I made for the doll, by looking at names with a certain meaning. Like my current story has to do with memories so I googled names with the meaning memory or something close to it (most of the time they're odd names so I go on google translate to hear how they sound)
