Question: How did you come up with your doll's name?

Sep 29, 2013

    1. Normally or most of the time when I loved a sculpt I instantly got a name for her or him then the back story follows right away. My minds runs wild most of time I guess. XP

    2. After i ordered my doll, I was telling my boyfriend about how I couldnt think of a name for her. So he helped me think, and I told him I wanted it to be a space-ish name. Like two minutes later, we both said Nebula at the exact same time so I decided to go with it and I think it fits :3

    3. when it comes to coming up with names in general for me, they tend to just pop into my head. The only one I've ever researched was for my boy doll I'm getting. I wanted a name the would reflect his parents in him.

    4. i mainly to have names for all my dolls except for my boys i dont know really why its so hard to pick up girls names so they are so far namlesa the girl one and my boys i named them after a certin animation charaters :D

    5. My doll is named after my Drow Warlock from D&D. He was the second character I created for D&D but he has always been my favorite. I have other characters that I play in D&D, RPG's and MMORPG's and if I get anymore dolls that's where their names will come from.

    6. Chosen a name for my dolls is really hard for me!
I tried to pick a unique and beautiful names that not common in the doll hobby.
Honestly I get some help from my family in naming, they really give me good names sometimes xp

    7. Sophia was originally a character I made up for a story I was planning on writing, however the story just wasn't inspiring me enough so I changed her character, but when I looked at my doll the name still fit her so I kept the name and changed the rest, sometimes I refer to her as Sophia 2.0.

My Dollshe boy has been somewhat problematic originally his name was to be Cato and he was Sophia's dad in that story, however I did away with that and the name didn't fit so I changed it to Bryn and gave him a new character however he has shrugged that one off to so he doesn't have a name right now.

    8. I love this thread! There are a few different ways I come up with a name.

      1) it's a baby name I had picked out when I thought I wanted kids, and it suits the sculpt (my little Emily has my favorite baby name)
      2) it's a name I've always liked for the type of character I gave the doll (Alex is my favorite tomboy name)
      3) it's actually the name of the sculpt (I really want a Luts Eveline, and I love the name so much I plan to keep it for her. I almost kept Noella and Miyu for those two dolls but changed my mind)
      4) it's flower related and suits the color theme for the doll (Briallan is all pink, and that means primrose in Welsh; Fujiko means wisteria child and pale purple is her theme)

All of my dolls have a flower theme in their names. Emily's middle name is Lavender. Alex is actually Alexandra Delphine, which comes is derived from the French word for delphinium flowers. Eveline's middle name is Violet (or it will be when I get her). I also have a little Azone with pink hair and her name is Momoko (peach child).

    9. My naming system is kinda lame. I mostly use names from songs.

    10. I usually get names from things that inspire me, like TV shows, or people I've seen/met that have deeply inspired me. Sometimes though I have a name picked out and when my dolly arrives I find that the name doesn't really fit, and I have to wait until they want to tell me who they are... which can sometimes be a long process! ^^" I also skim through baby names online and pick ones that I'm drawn to and eventually narrow them down to the one I like best!

    11. I let the character tell me. If they are not forthcoming about it I just start googling names and wait for something to click. Sometimes even that doesn't work and then I am just stuck until something gives.

    12. I have a Mirodoll Annie that I've named Arina Ivanovna Karamazov. When I first saw her sculpt, for whatever reason I thought she looked Russian, so I went with it. Arina I chose simply because it is a pretty Russian name. Ivanovna is after Ivan Illych from The Death of Ivan Illych as I think she and that character may have a bit in common (wanting to do everything "properly" but later realizing that you cannot live a full life while also doing everything expected of you). Karamazov is from the book The Brothers Karamazov. I picture her as having the passionate disposition found in the Karamazov family. Particularly, I am inspired by the more intellectual brother, Ivan Karamazov, so I suppose Ivanovna could come from him as well. Because her story focuses mainly on her studies and struggling to line up what she thinks she believes with what she actually believes, Ivan Karamazov is the perfect inspiration.

    13. The short version is process of elimination.
Once I'd chosen her I went to a baby name website and went through the girls names randomly picking out ones I liked that I thought might suit the basic idea/backstory I had for her. I ended up with a starting list of about 15 names. Over the course of the next several months before I got her I narrowed that list down to 5.
Then once she got here we looked at the list and decided on Callista.

    14. I'm attracted to 'word-names', that is, words that can be used as names, like Hope, Serenity, Dream, Opal, et cetera. I always planned on my collection becoming a 'match set', so I wanted their names to work well together. So I chose themed names that way, planning on 'Dawn', 'Dusk', and even 'Twilight'. But after several months with 'Dawn', maybe it was even over a year, I felt it just didn't work.

Around that time, I was playing a lot of 'Ace Attorney', and that game does a lot of theme naming of their own, especially pun names and such, to the point of obnoxiousness. For example, 'Maya Fey' for a spirit medium, 'Athena Cykes' for a psychology-specialist, or 'Luke Atmey' for a self-absorbed detective. One of the characters was named 'Dahlia Hawthorne', with the nickname 'Dollie', and I thought it was really cute. I ended up taking the name for my own girl and pushing it further, going with 'Dalia Dalhart'.

From there, I decided to theme-name all my dolls, mainly to doll-themed names. I ask myself now, 'If this doll were in an Ace Attorney game, what name could it have?' hahaha, and I've found this is much more fun than trying to think of something too subtle or too outlandish.

      Dalia Dalhart
      Byrne J. Dallas
      Taylor Lace
      Marion Knight
      Stirling
      Candy Cotton

I try to have names ready for dolls before they come, but aside from Poppett, the other names on this list aren't firm yet. I did want at least one of those ridiculously long names for a doll though, haha.

      Charm Minikin
      Poppy Poppett
Inigo Custodio de los Renato Cervantes del Masterman
      Blanche Belle

    15. I write, so I already have the characters. It's more a matter of finding the right doll to go with them. I've already found the perfect Gabrys, Milos and I'm waiting on Tay and Scott... but I'm still yet to find the perfect Alex and there's some characters I'm sure I'll never be able to get.

I'm starting to feel like I'm doing this in the wrong order.

    16. I'm REALLY bad at naming things, so only one of my dolls has a name. Them having names doesn't mean too much to me personally, but I'm so jealous of how easily some people are able to name theirs!

    17. Hmmm, names get debated a lot, but I try them out for a few days. I literally call my dolls by names that may suit them for a while to see which one "sticks".

My first doll, Valerian, was an instant Valerian. Named him after a character from Marcus Sedgwick's novels, but also because Valerian means "strength" and he looks kind of like a badass :'D

My second doll, Kyrie, I named after one of my favourite movements from the Missa Sancti Nicolai, aka the Kyrie XD I took Kyrie, nameless, with me to orchestra practice when I first got them and this was the first song we had to rehearse that day. Kyrie looked so happy during the song that I was like "bingo!"

And the last one I got, Siriana, took a few days and a few names of debate. She was going to be Shiri, Savium, Savi, and Siri, but I went for the longer name because she was too fancy for a short one 8'D I let her "wear" her names for a few days before feeling a sage nod come over me at "Siriana" hahaha

    18. Some are OC's that I've wanted to shell as a BJD while other names are based on their company photo. For example the girl I'm saving for has a dreamy face and elfen ears so my friend said Luna (after Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter) and I added Ava (from Avanna, a Celtic Elfen Vocaloid) as a sort of last name.

    19. Picking names is a hard work for me...My friends picked the name for my first two dolls. But I decided to choose for myself after that. Sometimes it just come to my mind suddenly.
