Question: How did you come up with your doll's name?

Sep 29, 2013

    1. Every doll that has arrived at my house without a name usually ends up leaving by the first year, so I always try to have a name ready for them when they get here. I pull my names from media and other things that I like at the time. My dolls always have a first, middle and last name.

Take my first boy, Atrus. His full name is Atrus Carlyle Apollinaris. Atrus comes from the Myst games (my boyfriend actually picked that one), Carlyle is the company name of my parent's wedding china, and Apollinaris was the name of some kind of wine mentioned in a book that I was reading at the time in college.

All of my dolls have names created in this menthod. In the end, it makes it so I have a special connection with their names, and it reminds of me of whatever particular time that I got them.

    2. I am planning on naming all my new dolls after my nieces and nephews. Maybe to try to limit myself as to how many dolls I have in my collection. My first doll I named Eyowyn from Lord of the Rings, my favorite book and she was my favorite character. I thought I was going to roll play her as the LOTR character, but now I just like her to be whatever suits my fancy at the time.

    3. I usually think about what I like. Also if I have created personality to my doll, I think of name that would suit him/her.
Sometimes when I just see doll I can say: "Hey, you look just like *insert name*"

My dolls are mostly from my stories and I buy them after I have created character, so they alredy have name even before ordering doll. : D

    4. I don't have my first doll yet, i am horrible at saving money >.>
but I do have a name for her. She was going to be based off a character of mine that's named Mizu,
yet I felt it didn't quite suit her. She's going to be slightly more demonic in nature, so after much thinking,
I came up with Tsumetai, it can mean cold-hearted in japanese.
      I don't think i'm giving her a last name.

I have other dolls planned for after I get my first one, but I don't have any names o .o

    5. Ahaha I kept seeing this thread but didn't realize it was you who started it LOL

I've had all sorts of ideas for names for my 2 ladies but I'm afraid to really put anything into stone. I've looked at baby name websites and random name generators, etc. I've looked at things I like like music and stories but I still haven't decide 100%!

I have no problems naming character for my stories. I don't know why naming dolls is harder. Maybe it's because I didn't get them with stories in mind.

    6. I only have as of rite now. But he sort of picked his own name (Its Iven). I just the name that I though suited him.

    7. I research a bit. For my first boy I had one name picked out but then I changed it and later I thought a different name would suit him but I couldn't picture calling him anything except Yuki. For Parker I made a list of names then just kept narrowing it down until I finally decided on the one I thought was him.

For the 2 dolls I'm saving for right now: I just saw KDF Darae and the name Olivia screamed at me as well as a whole backstory... But I was never fond of that spelling so I looked up alternate spelling so that when she arrived everything would be set for her. And now I really love the name and spelling, Alyvia so I can't wait to bring her home.

For the other doll I'm saving for (And I'm really torn who to get first): I researched names that actually fit his nationality. I used the same method as I did for Parker, made a list of names I liked then narrowed it down to the one that would fit him best. Mirza means prince and Mirza is a prince... but I did like the name not just the meaning. :)

    8. i browse for names if the doll is not shelling an already existing character. then i look and look until i find a name that suits them and "looks" like them :)

    9. With the first doll, I had originally thought up a first and last name. However, once I held her with her then default outfit, a totally different name (just a first name) popped out of my mouth, and it felt right. For the second doll, my husband had picked out one of two or three names he wanted for her, and the name fit that doll perfectly well. The third one, well, I just kept the default name and used it twice. For the most recent one, it was harder. My husband and I were tossing names around for a few days. It was kind of funny because we were worried about our parents overhearing us trying to find a decent girl's name and mistaking us as being pregnant. It feels like that though. For us, we stick with the one name we decided upon. Usually, it's just a first name and so far the names have stuck for as long as we've had the girls. =D Hope this was insightful.

    10. Usually my dolls shell out an existing character and their names come from whichever world they inhabit - a lot of my dolls have Welsh names or names derived from Welsh words because that's my culture and second-language and the source of a lot of my inspiration. I also love the German language, there are some sound similarities between Cymraeg and Deutsch so I can say them at least! And the different ways of spelling mean that I could take a Welsh word, spell it out in German and come up with a brand new thing.

Other dolls have completely random names - my Sist, Mojito, was named so because I love mojito cocktails and I thought it sounded like a spunky name for a rockabilly chick :)

My incoming LittleFee PongPong has the most bonkers name yet. I decided to call her Wishbone because I liked the combination of a sparkly upbeat word like 'wish' with something very down to earth and potentially dark like 'bone', and then I wondered if she was going to be a fae and if so she probably needed a secret name of power. I tried to work backwards down the alphabet and give her names starting with Z Y X and ending in W for Wishbone...

I've always liked Zelda so that was in. Yael was a pretty badass woman in the Bible and I wanted Wishbone to have some of that awesomeness, and I then got stuck on an X name. The X sound is so close to Z and everything I found I wasn't too keen on. So I searched around and remembered I liked the Greek name Polyxeni, and it still has an X in it, so technically it works  But the more I thought about it the more I felt it wasn't quite right for Wishbone. I played around with the name some more and came up with Polyglot, which isn't really a personal name, it's another way of calling someone multilingual, but it still seemed to fit her

    11. I name my dolls like I name everything. The first name that pops into my head and I go "Yeah! That's it!" is the name that the doll, stuffed animal, computer, or instrument gets. Two of my dolls have first, middle, and last names. My third has just a first name, but for her backstory, it doesn't make a whole lot of sense for her to have one. She might get one later, but I'm not sure yet.

    12. I named my doll based on a character from a story I'm writing. I call him Helios and that's what my family knows him as, but technically Helios is a last name for him and in my mind I call him Ehyan, which is the characters first name. Ehyan fits him better but I just cant bring my self to rename him.

    13. I don't own a BJD yet but I've already picked out two names for two possible dolls. For me they were just flashes of inspiration, try not to think about what to call him a name will come... :)

    14. Remedy's name came to me in a dream. Remedios Varo is a favorite artist of mine, too, so that also helped. Others were named from the moment I saw their pictures, but some I had to "meet" in person and then something would pop into my head. I've had some musical inspiration, too, and some characters from books or shows.

    15. Im waiting for my first doll right now and Im just making a mental list of names I like then I think Ill pick once she gets here :) my tiny that's coming with her though, I already picked his name because I came up with a character for him first.

    16. I had the name before my doll arrived. It's simple - just a name of the character. I was afraid that this name and character won't fit the doll but it was in vain because everything is fine with it ^__^

    17. I am in the same boat as Illigallyginger - waiting for my first doll. I can't decide if I haul out the baby name book from years ago, google things in the internet, or just "wing it" and think something up. I noticed that several people name before the doll arrives while others like to wait and "see what she looks like"... I'm quite torn and as of yet have nothing. So... wait for the doll to arrive it is!! (by default - LOL!!).

I just got my shipping notice today and am excited for when my Lati Yellow Byurl arrives - any name suggestions? I'm sorta "plain Jane" when it comes to this sorta thing and have only thought of Marie. What are your ideas? :D

Here is the link to her page on the Lati site for a visual: http://latidoll.com/2007_en/index.htm?mode=product_view&big=2&mid=4&num=1359
She will have dark blond, slightly wavy, long hair with bangs.

    18. Nothing too fancy, or imaginative -I get most of my doll's names from cartoon characters/manga. Most of the names are quite unusual, but easy to remember.

    19. Great idea! I'd like to pick something different, but easy as well - just gotta figure out what! Thanks for mentioning this tip! Hmmmm .... Now the wheels are turning!

    20. After I have the doll on hand, it kind of stays nameless for a while. Until the point where when I interact with it, a name of some sort pops into my head, then that becomes his or her name xD
