I don’t know if it’s just me, but I feel like it’s very very very hard to find good clothes for slim MSD (at least, that aren’t in the hundreds of dollars). I see shops all over Etsy and other sites but all I’m drawn to are clothes made for 1/3 or SD size dolls because they look less child-like or are more intricate/good quality (I contemplated just getting one so I can dress them how I want but as a 5ft petite woman, I don’t want a doll half my body size ). I guess my questions are: is it possible to stitch/modify SD clothing to fit MSD in an effective way (or can you tell me if any shops that sell SD clothing will be willing to modify their sizing?). Also, I would love to see photos of MSDs in SD clothing (I know it’ll look funny but maybe some outfits will work, like an oversized sweater or something). Thank you so much in advance! And I apologize if this has been a topic that has been discussed before ).
Man, I find I have the opposite problem. Everything's for slim mini, and mine aren't slim! That said, make sure you look up mnf/minifee clothing when you're searching on etsy, as a lot of the clothes are for them specifically. If you want custom sizes, I'd look for shops that 1. sell both sizes and 2. have a "request a custom order" button. I find that a lot of these shops are agreeable, and very nice even if they have to turn you down. As for the SD-to-MSD clothing thing... I'm not sure it would be possible. 1/3 and 1/4 are really different scales. An MSD in SD clothing looks like they're wearing a giant's clothes, and you can't even get a limb of an SD into an MSD item. I didn't have time to redress anybody, but this is a picture of SD pants and MSD pants, both made for males: The mat underneath has one-inch squares, if that helps to get a sense of size. I'll go ahead and say right now that I don't think I have any SD clothing that would work on an MSD, even as oversized. Not saying it's not possible, but I haven't personally seen it.
In my opinion - Not without going to so much trouble/effort that it would be quicker and better to make clothes in the right size from scratch. If you don't sew or would rather buy than make them yourself, rather than trying to find shops who make stuff you like and trying tpo persuade them to make it in a different size, why don't you just commission someone to make something in the style/colour/fabric you want...? I make stuff myself but also commission clothes on occasion. There are people out there who do work that I'm more than willing to pay for becuase it's good quality and they make what I ask for. Raj of Sewing Box Designs for example, made me some excellent Norfolk suits for three of my boys. Teddy
For unoa/narae Dollheart used to make slim msd clothes. And I vaguely remember the Ellowyn Wilde clothes maybe? fitting... See if there's a discussion thread for your specific doll here on DoA & see if there has been any discussion of clothing sources. The smaller the doll the trickier the style & fit details get. That's why I gave up on msd's & love sewing for my sd's. My good friend on the other hand has become a big fan of Sartorial J as she loves the smaller fid size & they are good clothing designers. Hopefully you can find the styles you're looking for with a little more research Good luck!
I’ve tried to go on there but the site was very confusing to navigate even with the translate button, I couldn’t really figure out how to ensure a listing is legit or where the reviews are. Thank you so much for the photos! I’m actually surprised by the big difference :O I’ve never seen the dolls posted side by side. So I guess there’s no way to cross over :/ I’ll have to check out professionals then (their stuff is out of my budget at the moment but maybe if I save up or learn to see better I could save myself the headache). Thank you so much! Thank you! A lot of stores I used to follow closed when the pandemic happened and that was unfortunately when I got back into BJDs. Hopefully those talented artists on Etsy will all come back and more
@BlackCatNova Hi I own several Minifees which are slim msd's. You never mention the style of clothing you are looking for, do you want modern looks? Period gowns? Fantasy? Which doll do you own? One thing I look at is the measurement comparisons for different brands. I own Minifees and have their measurements, when looking at other dolls I look to see what their measurements are and if they are close to my girls, it's a great point of reference. I am purchasing my first SD and I made a spreadsheet of the dolls I was interested in to see how their measurements compare...for ease of buying for them and sewing for them. You might also consider perusing Instagram, there are quite a few talented stylists and creators there who have etsy shops or some other way of purchasing from them. You can also ask where they found something that caught your eye. One other thing to consider, should you decide to commission something. At first, what someone might charge you may seem high, but please take into consideration 1. Ready made clothing from manufacturers may look amazing in pics but generally are not made well and the fabrics may be thin and not quality. 2. The clothing by commission, you have more say over as in fabric colors and quality, how much detail you want (Trims and such) and is usually very well made. 3. Do your research, not all sewers are created equal. Ask questions, peruse pictures, reach out to people who have had commissions done by the sewer you are interested in. In the end, you will be happy you did Dolls are like people, we are NOT one size fits all, LOL and I agree Taobao gives me a headache!
Thank you so much for all the information! It’s given me a lot to think about and a new perspective The styles I was looking for were a mix of a lot of things (I have a minifee and a hybrid with a soul doll new kid body that are my current focus). I wanted some street wear or more adult (not nsfw, like actual adult age) outfits for my soul doll and possibly some dark academia/Harry Potter style clothing for my minifee. The issue is that MSDs seem to be the “kid” or “young teen” size so a lot of the clothes I’m finding are Mori or Lolita style, which is not what I want. I think I might actually go on Instagram though it’s hard to find tailors because most BJD posts I’ve come across are for already made clothing. I guess I’ll just have to try harder
Just for a photo reference, here's my Angel of Dream Chen on the original body. He's about 45-46cm, so a bit bigger than Minifee, and the SD shirt swallows him whole, it doesn't even work as an oversized shirt. I'm going to agree with some others here--to make this fit 1/4 scale, you'd have to cut it apart entirely, cut it down, then completely remake it. It would cheaper and faster to make it yourself from scratch.
@BlackCatNova - I would reiterate @Kimmera comments - and would also ask if you have looked thru the DoA listings under HandcraftedGoods and Clothing? There are a lot of talented artisans on DoA too!! https://denofangels.com/forums/handcrafted-clothing-accessories.177/
@BlackCatNova have you tried elitedollworld on Etsy? I know Denver Doll also carries a selection of slim MSD basics (leggings and cardigans). tiandto on Etsy is also nice. And BelleMagniDolls. It's hard finding good boy slim MSD stuff in general these days though. I have that problem.
Hi BlackCatNova, I have the impression that the size difference is big to compare the two sizes. Except some clothes, the majority of 1/3 size clothes, I do not think that would fit to an MSD.
