I hybridized my doll because at the time when I want to get July, I asked Rainmankin about rerelease and he said he won't rerelease July again. I missed the 1st pre-order period. I am surprised now that he going to rerelease July even he said no to me. What a bummer. I am happy I got the 1st release ver. The doll body that he had is not for sale either. I remember there was a Group order for Rainman's Doll body but I don't have the budget at that time. Hence, I chose the path of hybridising my Rainmanking July.

This is what I did when I searched for the bodies suitable for my July I based the measurements on Rainman's Female Body. Fortunately, Sabrina_dolls in IG (I bought my July head from her) posted this body comparison Login • Instagram
What makes it even more challenging in my case is the resin colour, I have a Tan July which is pretty much harder to hybrid. I chose Impldoll Star body because it is the nearest size/measurements to Rainman body even it's little taller and they can do custom resin matching.

To do doll hybrid takes a lot of research and comparing sizes between different doll companies which one is near the Rainman body because that is what I wanted. Other people have different plans with their dolls and maybe they don't prefer the physique of her original body. This is why sometimes doing a doll hybrid is a frustrating but satisfying side of BJD hobby because it is pushing the customisation beyond further.

 

@BlueSand thank you so much for your thoughts. I discovered Rainman the year they released the July sculpt. And honestly, I actually prefer the Blina sculpt more, however I had done some reading regarding attempts to hybridize her and that it was tough to match up her head to a neck. That scared me away from that sculpt (even though I love love LOVE it) and so I figured the July sculpt would be a nice second. However I haven't had the funds until now to place an order.

I can only hope that Rainman releases the body again. But thank you for the link to the body comparison. I very much appreciate that.

 

@Bluenocs I'm hybridizing just due to the body type not being what I want for the character. Wendy is a ballerina so I wanted a more willowy body like the Dollshe 16F body for her. Bonus for the pointe feet. The Rainman body is really nice from what I've seen, but the character plans come first for me.

 

Well, for me it's price. I also just don't think it's that much better looking than an Impldoll Star or can pose better than an Impldoll MGB (which has very broad shoulders, I need to modify my MGBs) and those are half the price. Though Rainman's bodies are undoubtedly fantastic, it's not worth more than twice the cost to me.

Also, his first heads do not fit his new body. It changed after Kira I believe. So Blina, Anna and Kira are heads that require a smaller neck diameter. Then he made Eva with the original body, and those heads are more in line with Impldoll necks.

I’ve asked people who own the body (and the different heads), like Fantyfoo, Morgan Dolls, Sabrina_Dolls (who actually distributes these dolls in Russia and beyond) and they all love the body. So I guess it’s a matter of preference.

I personally prefer to buy a few heads and have less bodies for those heads to share- that way at least I have the moulds I love and hope to have more bodies in the future. Or make some, as I’m a doll maker as well and sooner or later, I’ll make a large body as well.

But if you like the body, go for it. Rainman’s craftsmanship is extraordinary.

 

Yes, like others have said the Rainman body is lovely. I am only looking to hybrid because my July will be male.

 

Yah, I should clarify about the cost of the body. It's probably not over-priced for what you get. That wasn't my intended reasoning, it's that I have very limited funds, and a huge apatite for pretty dolls so I tend to look for bargain bodies

It's good to know about Impldoll. I've never really investigated them before, so I may go have a peek at their offerings.

I have a thing about bodyless heads. I love the idea of having multiple heads to fit one body. I don't have alot of space for storage of boxes and dolls, so one would think that this is a great solution. However my instinctual urge is that every head has to have a body. It's almost complusive, it's so strong. As soon as I seek out a head, I automatically think 'New body alert!!!" So that process has not worked for me...yet. (perhaps when I get overrun with dolls I will rethink my thinking? ). Anyhow, I digress. And thank you all for your input.

I have my Rene on the Rainman body and I really like it.

 

I think that, in a way, that’s better. It’s very hard to manage many floating heads. But then again, how many SD-sized (plus other) dolls can one display? I find it overwhelming already...

 

I think I'm pretty much at my limit myself @cureilona . I have 2 extra rooms which I've stolen from my husband, LOL. One has the dolls, the printer and the doll things, the other has my sewing room. I'm going to get the heads I have bodies, and that will be it. Impldoll keeps sending heads along when I buy a body, and sometimes they're super awesome heads and ... there goes another floating head! But I am going to restrict myself, if they will send me heads or such in the future, I will simply sell it, and try not to look at it, LOL (unless it's a boy, I may need a few more boys... oh dear Oh, um, and this gorgeous new R&R head.....

 

Well herein lies my problem as well. I really love SD size because I really love SD size. I also love MSD size. My craft room is full to the brim and now i've taken over the spare bedroom. And these gigantic boxes...(I'm looking at you SartoriaJ!! ). I don't want anymore gigantic boxes. But I want the dolls that are in them. And I really really love Rainman heads. July will be my first. But I'd take a Blina, a Kiera, an Anna (if I wasn't afraid of their neck holes)...I would love to have to new one.....and I'd want them all displayed together.

Oh gods, tell me about it @Bluenocs . I hate hate hate fancy boxes!!! I can't throw them away, I can't store them, they completely SUCK! I've started throwing away some of my boxes from makers that don't do fancy, but that's just 2 companies I've dealt with. Everyone else is fancy and I really hate it. The stupid thing is, I'll never sell my dolls. But I think that when I die, my kids will need the boxes to sell the dolls off, LOL, stupid eh?

Only saw it on instagram, Opaleighty's feed. she looks a lot like July, only with asian eyes. I'm not sure it's enough for me to add a doll to my collection even so she does have a slight Korean air to her, her nose isn't right, and that bums me out. I mean really, Caucasian noses are all we ever get! Do they really think that other features just don't sell? I really should have gotten Su, she's odd, but real. I thought the sculpt was supposed to be a feline/human, but it's based on a model named Tsunaina. Anyway, sad I didn't get her

 

Well I think the same. My background is fashion dolls and there was always so much emphasis on pristine boxes...I guess the nice thing about ordering the July head, and potentially getting the unstrung Rainman body or a different body, is that maybe I won't feel it necessary to keep the boxes once she's complete. Yessss....a great excuse to put together another doll!

And Su is beautiful!

 

I have a body coming for my Su head. I think her shoulders should be okay. A wee bit of blushing might be needed but I'm hoping not. One body sharing journey at an end. I still want a sleep eyed Su head. It's upsetting she is listed as limited.

I tried to order the Rainman body and I couldn't get past a box that kept popping up. My computer wouldn't translate it. So, needless to say, no body for me. Anyone know how I get past that box? I have had an account, just never ordered.
