Rare or popular: discuss your preference

Jul 25, 2007

    1. I chose my boy simply out of my love for him... he's from a popular company, but there aren't too many of him...

But I can see how a doll becomes less interesting due to popularity... when I first saw DoT Ducan, I really liked him... now I'm kind of bored...

      *Edit*
I think I'm bored by Ducan, 'cause most of the time he's got his default faceup... I'm a sucker for costom faceups!

And I think, when you get bored by a doll you once liked, when it becomes popular, this doll wasn't ment for you in the first place...

    2. I have a MNF Dreaming Shiwoo Vampire Elf,don' know/don't care if he's rare or popular or not,I love his scuplt.

I also have a Pipos LE Bao on the way home because he fit the look of my character.

So no,I don't prefer the rare dolls or the popular ones.
The dolls that look like my characters usually are the ones I will buy, although I do want to get an El and Shiwoo (Delf size)

    3. So far, I have used neither rarity nor popularity to determine my buying a doll. In both cases it was just a matter of seeing a doll that really struck me as desirable - just aesthetics.

    4. rare or pop - rare moreso than popular. But that said I'd rather buy something interesting as well. Rare or not, the doll would have to be tugging on my heartsleeves.

Cant really comment on anything else except I hope if I ever post in Gallery my pictures are worth looking at and the dolls are actually as beautiful in the photos as they would be in real life, since my photo skills are downright pathetic

    5. In all honesty? I couldn't care less one way or another. Never have; As far as popular goes, I'm notorious for refusing to buy new clothes for long, long periods of time because I don't like what's currently "in" and thus available(doesn't matter if it looks good on me or not), and I learned to knit largely because I was fed up with trying to find hats/scarves/sweaters I liked. I've never cared much for rarity; I don't understand the big deal, really. If I like something, I like it, and given my personality I'll be making the doll(or anything else for that matter-I have been known to dye and screenprint my own jeans for cripes sake) "mine" regardless.

    6. I don't like a doll because it's rare... If I happen to like rare dolls it's because of how they look.
I generally don't like the popular dolls just because seeing so many of them is a little boring.

    7. - Neither. I just go for the ones I find appealing.

      - No and No.

      - Possibly, but I like seeing all dolls and images.

      - I won't buy any doll unless I've seen a few more images than whats on the site. It keeps me from making the mistake of buying a model that I wouldn't be happy with.

    8. I'd like to say that it doesn't matter, but if I were choosing a doll based solely on its rarity vs popularity factor... I'd go with the more rare sculpt :3nodding: While all of the dolls I own I purchased because I liked the headmold, I'm also subversively pleased to own a set of somewhat rarer dolls.

That said, I don't think I'm hot stuff because I happen to have these 'rare' dolls - but I've always been the kid who has to be different from her peers. I wouldn't decide against a mold just because it was popular, but I might be slightly bothered by being the nine billionth doll owner to have a CP mold.

This could be one of the reasons I decided to re-shell Henry, my former undead chiwoo :B Or why I modded him in the first place.

As for searching through gallery threads, I go for the sculpts I like - but I also tend to ignore threads involving the extremely popular molds like El or Shiwoo, unless I know the poster.

    9. Generally I shop more for the look than for the status...

BUT if I were to have a choice between a popular or rare doll, assuming I thought they were both equally to my liking and neither for a specific character, I'd probably lean towards the rarer doll. Limited edition, rare items, that stuff always appeals to be a little. Maybe I'm a sucker for that kind of status symbol, but it's kind of fun to have something that there aren't very many of. :XD:

    10. Even though I have all CP boys... It is not because I prefer them over any other company. I chose the doll by how the character is on paper. I draw a lot and I find that CP has basically the same facial structures as the majority of the characters I would like to put into resin.

    11. - I personnaly do not care if the doll is rare or popular. I buy the doll only if I like the model.
      - No
      - I have to admit that I click more often on Doll Gallery which display pictures of the models I like.
      - Why not if I like it =)

    12. - The rarity or popularity of a doll I bought has never played a part in why I'd buy them. I have an El, which is one of the most popular dolls out there (or at least was for a while) and I love him madly. I also just sold my Woosoo which is considered rare and pretty popular because it just wasn't "working out". So it's really all about my love for the specific doll rather than how rare or popular it might be.

      - It really bugs me when people say that they don't want an El (or other popular dolls) because they're so popular. Who cares? If you love a doll, buy it. If you're buying a doll for any other reason I don't think you'll get as much joy out of it.

      - I'm more likely to click a thread if it has a doll I like, yes. I don't like all CP dolls though. If I see a thread is a Lu-Wen I'm less likely to click it than if it's a Yder for instance.

      - Sure I would. I prefer to see owner pictures first (especially for dolls like the Dream of Doll dolls) but if I haven't seen it before so what? I'll spend my money and take my chances as my mother would say.

    13. if i like a doll and have money i buy it. simple. i don't care is it rare or popular. i buy a doll because i love him/her. and more people who buy only le or dollfies because they are popular makes me laugh same as people who buy no matter what mold just because they desperately want a dollfie

    14. - Unpopular/rare dolls appeal far more to me than popular ones. I'm a fan of the underdog :) however if i did fall in love with a more common mould i wouldn't avoid buying it because of it's popularity.

      - No, I wouldn't. The gallery isn't a part of my doll ownership at the moment (waiting on some MSC first >_>) but I'm sure it will be in the future, but to just have a doll to get attention seems a bit odd to me.

      - I'm more likely to click threads if I haven't heard of the mould :)

      - Definately. Assuming that I liked it, of course.

    15. Scratch all that from before

Question 1. In the long run, I would go more for the less known, rarer doll. most of my kids are unknown/rare/unpopular.

Question 2. I don't take photo's of my dolls as it is now, I don't really tend to care about gallery clicks

Question 3. I'm more likely to click what ever catches my eye, popular doll or no

Question 4. Two of my dolls were bought with no DoA pictures, Abio Angel Yi snow skin, about the same time as he came around, I ordered him though a Taiwan seller who bought and shipped him to me. My MinoruWorld Leila, there was no photo's I could find when I bought her, but this time a store. My BambiCrony Charity, I only saw one or two other photo's when I decided to buy her.

    16. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?

I really don't mind either way much really but I suppose it is somehow more exciting to buy something you know not so many people like/have. The bottom line for me is that I will just buy what I like and that is that.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?

Never. I like photographing my dolls for myself more then anyone else. If my doll got just one comment or got 100 comments it wouldn't matter much to me.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.

The only dolls I look out for specifically is Dollfie Dream dolls. I love them so much but I find not many people here at all own/post them. If they do post them, they don't seem to get much love.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?

Yes I would, but only if I liked the doll. When I originally got my MSD Midori I hardly ever saw her, if at all. I fell in love with her sweet smile and warm eyes and I was sold. Same happened with my Dollfie Dream Yashiro Kasumi, I had never seen her on here before and I still have not seen anyone other then myself with one but thats just me, if I like the doll I'll get it ^^.

    17. I buy my dolls solely based on whether I like the mold, so if I had to choose between a rare or popular doll, I would choose the one whose mold I like better.

Buuut just say I liked both molds equally. Then, I'd go for the rare one obviously. Not because I want gallery views/comments (I don't post photos often), but because it'd feel more 'special' to own a rare doll. :]

Also, I'm more likely to click on threads which contain dolls that I like. eg. DOD, CP, Migidoll, etc.

    18. i'd have to say i really enjoy buying rare dolls. i like to feel that i've got one. makes me feel special lol :sweat

i do like some of the popular modes, and i probably will buy one at one point. i'm just not sure which one yet lol.

    19. Hmm, well neither appeal to me, seeing that if I like a BJD, then that is the doll I want to get and if I don't like a doll then I will just never get that doll, that is all.

Though I would never just buy a doll for something like more gallery views or such, I think that would be a little bit like a attention whore kinda move. I really just don't see the purpose of buying something that costs so much just because you would want to have something someone else wouldn't have or if no one appealed to it...

As I said, I would want a doll just because I love the doll, there would be no other purpose.

Though I will admit that I would go and look more at some threads just because it was a company I usually enjoy or if I liked the doll.
      I can't say I have a "favorite" company, I can't choose just one...

And yes I would buy a doll I had seen on this forum, but only if I truly loved the doll!

    20. Well, I don't really care for whether the doll is rare or not. Of course, sometimes I would get that collector's lust but I know it's going to pass away at some point. And the fact that I probably would get tired of the default outfit/wig/shoes and so on, and the doll would be just like any other doll in the preference of the "look" I choose for them. Hence defeating the purpose if it being a Limited doll. :sweat
And if it's rare as in the terms of the mold / sculpt, well then, the mold has to appeal to me in the first place for me to want it.

And as for the popularity factor... I'd rather buy a doll that not much people have or is overlooked oftentimes in favor of a "prettier" sculpt. Not that I've succeeded in that as I realized that Arus are more popular than I originally thought they were. >_< I thought that for sure more people would be wanting a Cherry girl more than Aru... :sweat Ah well, it turned out for the better. I think. *get smacked by Ru* x_X@ Gahk
