Rare or popular: discuss your preference

Jul 25, 2007

    1. just re read my old post, and still agree with what i said, but it seems that i am inadvertantly chasing rare dolls.

the only volks dolls i like are 3 of their very few discontinued dolls; old f-07, misia and shinsya

i have a kid delf somi, discontinued since last year, an unpopular juri event head which will become hard to fine, and a discontinued kid delf jeong (on an mnf body)

im also wishing for a dollshe afghan, possibly being disconintued and owned by hardely anyone. on the total FLIPSIDE i want a dot shall, cp lishe, kd ani and kd aru; all very or fairly popular

so as you can probably tell; my wishlist and owner list is a total mix of rare and popular. i dont strive for a doll because its more rare but it will prompt me to buy it before the others, hence why lishe, shall and aru can wait

    2. I made this thread so long ago.

I think I've changed my mind a little since then. I don't think I prefer rarer dolls out of choice, but I do like to see dolls stled in different ways.

Sometimes I think I've seen too many Soony, but then I'll see one that blows my mind.

I think all dolls can be made to be unique and interesting, no matter how many times you've seen the mold.

I have a Lusis and I know this is a very popular doll, not exactly rare, but when I look at mine I don't feel bored, because she is different in that her faceup, wig and clothes are not the same as all the other Lusis have.

I wonder if that made any sense lol.

    3. its all about persional tast that why there are so may dolls. If we all had the same tast we all would have the same doll.

    4. to me ir really does not matter whether the doll I was buying was a one in a million or one of a kind, if I love it its mine. seeing that you customise the doll anyway to your own likeing of wig eyes, face up personality & clothes it would to me not feel like "following".

would i buy any doll just because its rare?.... for me thats a big no

    5. My doll is to try various shape, isn't according to me am personal mood, just feel his qualities is in keeping with what appearance.

    6. Both my first 2 dolls are popular molds. Very popular indeed. Especially El. And that was absolutely not a matter for me, as long as I have that very doll as my one and only unique character. And regarding 'rare' and 'limited' dolls, I just think that getting a rare one just because it's rare and valuable is not a good way of enjoying your dolls. Buy what you like. Please your own likings. One of my dream dolls happens to be a 'rare' doll. I got him finally. Not because he's rare, but because I like him and I want him so bad.
Dolls are not antique items. With those you need them rare and valuable. But with dolls, you need to like them. I think that it's the most important factor.
I hate it when ppl avoid buying some certain dolls they like just because they are "cheap" and popular as well, they might be caring about the qualities, but overall, there's a tiny bit of a 'trendy' trend in it which I usually sense. Some of them only allow themselves to buy dolls from certain famous and luxurious companies to keep some certain " level ". I myself do not think that's a way to enjoy your hobby.
Yes, it's a hobby after all, not a business. No one said you have to wear Chanel or LV to look like a leader.
I might sounded right, or wrong, to you. I'm not that of a solid experienced doll owner as well. But honestly this is what I feel.

    7. I like both actually. Although I would like to see a few of the unseen molds its all good x3

    8. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
Well, I guess when it's rare, it has a sort of draw. You know it's only one of three or one of 50 and you count yourself lucky to be among the few. :)
Of course, a popular sculpt can be seen across the forum. You can see limitless possibilities, which face up look better, which wigs, which outfits. And you can still make it your own.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?

Ha, no. It's all about me, and the beautiful faces I favor. Completely the opposite.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favorite company.

Um, yeah, I really like CP. I will look at any gallery thread with my favorite company or favorite doll. I like to see the various looks that are displayed and compare my favorites.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
Well, if I hadn't seen the company, I would be hesitant and search for information about buying from them. But, if I liked the doll, there's no way I wouldn't buy it. ;)

    9. I don't think I have a preference. I certainly gravitate towards certain sculpts that are rare, but in most cases I loved the doll before I even knew it was rare. I also have popular sculpts which are easily available.

    10. Doesn't really matter, as long as I like them.

    11. Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?

      ---------

      - I don't think i've ever thought about 'oh i'll get this doll because i'll get more gallery views' because, lol, I never get gallery views. and I don't need people to constantly feed me cookie cutter 'omg he's so pretty!' responses, ;D I know my dolls are wonderful. I HAVE thought about maybe not getting popular molds because they ARE popular, and i like to be unique. I once wanted a MNF shiwoo...and wow. yeah.

      - LOL no, i'm actually not more likely to click on a thread just because it has a ceratiain company's doll. Usually i click my what the thread is titled XD if it's like a funny title then i'll ususally click it, or if it looks worthwhile. I mean, yeah, if it has a moulld i like or like seeing diferent ones of i'll click it. but not just because it says 'CP' because...there's a lot of "CP" dolls that make me want ot punch babies.

      - i might buy a mold i've never seen on the board to be unique, but only if I liked said particular mold.

I know that i do like osme of hte more popular molds, but none of the EXTREMELY OMG!! everyoen owns one... I think that's what kinda turned me off from EL, sadly... But I know my next doll is going to be a 'rare' mold...he's super molded and i feel so honored to have him .3. but i wouldn't get a 'rare' mold just for hte fact that their rare... i mean. some are really unattractive and...i dunno.. everything subjective.

    12. I have to admit to basing my judgments on popularity, at least a little. For example, I really like F-16s, but I would never be able to have one of my own because they're just so popular. I wouldn't be able to see the doll as my own character, because it would be yet another F-16. So yes, I do think I gravitate at least slightly to the rarer dolls.

    13. I have to agree with many here.. it is a case of what I really like. I do have a LE but I got her not because she was an LE but more cause I had never seen a white skinned KDM before with such pretty eyes... its the eyes and the shape that i think makes me love a doll.

But also.. if it hadnt been for the Puki's popularity I would have never known about them... and now I have my own lil one. :) So in a way making a doll popular increases awareness of them for those of us that dont normally pay attention ;)

    14. I would get a doll that I LIKE. But, for me... I tend to like the dolls that.. are very unpopular and not alot of people fall for. So..

I don't know. I wouldn't spend over $600 to just follow a crowd... waste of money.

    15. I always go for dolls that I like first, then rare comes a close solid second. I don't necessarily gravitate to dolls that a popular most of the time.

    16. I have two LE dolls, but I certainly didn't get them because they were limited. It just happened those were the ones that I liked the most, although it did force me to buy one of them sooner that I had planned since he was selling so fast.

I had been considering what dolls I would get for my first ones (I wanted a boy and a girl). My only requirement was that they be the same size, so there was a bit of compromise there.

At first I loved the more popular dolls and couldn't consider buying anything else. Then I realized how hard it would be for me to make my own doll unique and not overwhelmed by all the others of the same mold. So I branched out a bit, and as new dolls started being offered from companies around Christmas, I found the two that I wanted.

The next dolls I am planning to buy aren't limited, and I'll love them just as much as my current two dolls.

    17. For me, I don't care if it's rare or not. I do not own a doll for the moment, but I'm looking for the good one. And I will choose it because I'm in love with it. That's the main point.
I would be happy if I can find a Moo Yan from DollTi, I know this mold is very rare to find. But I didn't choose it because it's rare. Just because more I see his picture, more I love him and more I want him :D

Most of all, even if the mold is popular, the personality, the clothes, the name, the story will change the doll. And each one is finally different.

    18. I have to say I'm a little put off if the doll is overpopular - it's probably a bit shallow, but it makes me feel that mine would be somehow less unique (I know that I can't really talk with one CP sculpt and another on the way, but they're not the most popular ones that I've seen on the forums)
On the other hand, if there was a doll that really grabbed me and I fell in love with it ... I wouldn't resist it, even if everyone and their dog had one. So it has an effect, but a small one :)

    19. For me, i wouldnt care if it was rare of common. I would buy something i really like and can afford. If not i save and earn.

    20. My Regan is one of two or three Domuya Flexibody Idas on DOA, and I had fallen in love with her before I knew that. I must admit, when I found out that almost no one had her, and that the general consensus was "...she's kinda manly" I very defensively said to my girlfriend, "She's GORGEOUS and I think she's PERFECT!"...but LOL, it wasn't the catalyst for me buying her. If anything, the holiday sale pushed me over the edge more than the rarity.

And my other doll is a Narae, so that balances that out - I think everyone and their mother on DOA has a Narae. They seem to have taken a sudden surge in popularity, which is great. Our thread's well populated and we've got lots of references for clothes.

If anything, the only thing that might guide my hand is my weird attraction to oddly-sized dolls (slim mini and super-tall girl...and I'm pretty sure when/if I get another, it's going to be one of the slimmer boys, like a SOOM and/or DOT). It's easier to get one of the more popular dolls that's a weird size than one that no one owns :| then at least someone can sympathize and offer advice about what you can cobble together.
