Rare or popular: discuss your preference

Jul 25, 2007

    1. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
Neither, as many others have said. its if i like the sculpt or not. Granted, i'm probably a bit more likely to consider the more unloved sculpts whoa re rarer in owner pictures, but i'm all for popular molds too. For instance, my first doll was a kid delf girl Aru. I know of maybe 6 on the board, and at the time i'd only ever seen one, a boy, posted in the galleries, and the db thread only had two posts in it. However, i've also got a kid delf Bory, who seems to have skyrocketed in popularity sinc ehis release.

I give all sculpts equal opportunity, but if i'm torn between two, and one hardly ever surfaces on the boards, i'll probably be more likely to go after them.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
nooooo~ Basically, if i'm buying a Bory, i'm buying him because i love him, not his popularity. And while i may shy away from the more popular ones for the follower status, i'd still get the doll because they're beautiful, not because everyone else has them.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
Honestly?...yes XD I'm a sucker for CP, and i'm more likely to click on gallery threads bcause they've got dolls i like more. Adversly, i'm more likely to not click on certain threads if im not particularly fond of a sculpt included in it.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
yup =] While it helps to see some owner pictures prior to buying, i'm all cool with being the first. Like my Aru. I think i'd seen all of two pictures of an aru girl other than the default luts pics before i got my Piper. And it was the same girl, too.

    2. Its pretty much about the sculpt for me. it seems like the scuplts that I like *so far* are not limted so I have been fortunate.

    3. personaly i think it doesnt matter..i rather stick or my original and make the best of it then just buy a doll that no one have before or it rarely seen or buying the one that is popular cuase you will end up having too many...lol. but i am to choose between rare and popular i would choose rare becuse i wont see to many of the same doll...and want to attract attention that my doll is rare.

    4. Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular? Neither. I don't go by popularity or rareness. If I like a mould, if it reaches out from the screen grabs me by the shirt and screams buy me, then that's what I do. ;) I seriously don't give a flying flip whether the doll is popular, rare or anything in between.

Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower? Since I think I've posted in the gallery twice, I'd say that's a resounding "No"... to both questions.

Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company. Not necessarily. I click on (photostories) threads I know have my favourites (characters) but I do select threads that feature a particular mould if I'm thinking about getting one or interested in them somehow.

Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums? Sure. If it appeals, no problem. However, most of the dolls I see/find are through the forum so.. :sweat

      LM

    5. I don't have a perference, I would'nt buy a doll because it would get you more gallery views. I only purchase dolls that appeal to me.

    6. I would only buy something that I liked, even if everyone else hated it. I go for elegance, not popularity. :)

    7. I love popular girls! My first loves were SD Nono, SD Megu, and CP Soo, and they're still my three favorite girls. EVER. I have never seen any sculpts that tempt me as much as those girls do.

(The only reason I don't own all three is that I find 60cm just too big for me!)

Even my "expensive" pick is darn popular: Lusis. Or Sist. Or Cyndy. (Because she looks like the other cute SD girls...)

Although I'm not really current on dolltrends -- I mean, Hound was popular for a while, and Latis, and Pukis and all, but none of those are my thing, since there are so many different types of BJD nowadays. The pretty stylistic 60 girls, though... I adore my artists' dolls, but... sigh! One day I'll get those three. They'll be too huge to do anything with in my tiny house, but I'll just stick them in a corner. Mwahahahaha.

    8. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
I rarely consider that, well I only devote to the ones that appeals to me whether its been popular or not, frankly I donโ€™t know if a doll is been popular cos Iโ€™m still kind of newbie here

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?

Never thought of that at allโ€ฆO_o

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
      Nope, whatโ€™s a CP anyway:?

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
Errโ€ฆI look at the doll site more then from the forum in deciding to purchase a doll so.. nope.

    9. Interesting thread :o

Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?

That it's a fantastic doll. I don't really care about whether it's popular, though owning rare dolls can be eciting as you can make it more easily own/unique looking.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?

It actually bugs me that some awesome dolls don't get gallery views because they're not popular, DM Momo for instance(...bit biased opinion but oh well!). Some molds are popular just because somebody modded their doll to look awesome and so people see the potential in the mold. These are the followers, but I think it's okay, company pics can sometimes provide you with only one side of the doll as just one face-up is showed~
But I think that now that I have Lusis, I will include both of my girls when taking pics so I'm tricking people to see Momo alongside Lusis. ;3
I actually didn't think at the beginning of my hobby that I would ever get Unoa as they were so popular.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.

I honestly can say I don't click CP threads as I've seen too many. Unless they are by somebody whose dolls I know already.
But I think I'll click Unoas... Now that I've been on somekind of "Unoa high" for a while.
I open the threads which includes dolls I like and they're mostly average by popularity.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?

Yes, I practically bought as there weren't any same style Momos on the forums when I bought mine and so I couldn't see wheter the mold would suit my purposes. The buying decision came when I saw LE company pics.

    10. I've not chimed my measly two cents in yet.

-Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
I honestly could care less. It all comes down to mold for me. If I see a doll that just screams buy me, then I'll buy it.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
Well... partially yes, and partially no on the first question. I'd love to get gallery views. However, I know that it's not going to be because I have a "popular" mold. It'll be because my camera skills aren't up to the best of the best, in my opinion. To me, you could have the most beautiful doll, but take terrible pictures of it...
As for the "Follower" aspect. I think I may be caught as one in a little while when my girl gets home. There have been a lot of people that are purchasing, or have purchased the doll I'm buying, so I may get pegged as a follower. As I said before, however, it's the mold, not it's popularity. I'll go ahead and out myself as the complete noob I am, and state that I still barely know molds. All I know is that Shiwoos are cool, and Hounds are cool, and Els are cool... Danged if I actually know exactly what they look like.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
Well, the only one that I'm seriously bad about always clicking on are anything that features a Puki. I'm kind of partial to the cuteness. That, and it's my second choice for a doll, so I'm trying to see pictures of them, for ideas. That's about it on my preferences regarding sculpts.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
Considering my first doll is a limited that isn't even out yet, yes. I can safely say that I would. Although, I will hopefully get a Pukisha, and those have been on the forum. Doesn't stop me from liking them.

    11. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?

If I HAD to choose, I'd rather have something rare, but I'd never actually buy a doll for that reason alone. I do have a contrariness to my character that makes me gravitate towards less popular things in general, as my two current BJDs show. Most of the dolls I'm currently coveting seem about middle of the road, however.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?

Not at all. I've always disliked that sort of behavior. I would never care about what someone else might think of something I want.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favorite company.

I'd be more likely to look if they have Iplehouse or Latidolls, as I really love those. And of course AoD, as I already have one.

      - Would you buy a doll you had not seen on forums?

I bought Little Dal without seeing him anywhere except on the AoD site. I definitely like seeing a head in different face-ups and settings to get a better idea if it is right for my character, but I would buy with only factory photos if I really fell in love.

    12. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
Honestly I go for a doll only because "I" want it, but I do admit straight away that I have a soft spot for rare/limited dolls. I worry that if I dont buy them when I have the chance I will regret it later.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
No, I honestly wouldnt buy a doll just because it would get more views, that being said I was personally pretty shocked when I got my first "rare" doll how much the views increased, I wouldnt get a single reply to my photo posts but when I added the rare in the mix all of a sudden I got replies left and right. It was surprising to be honest, I had bought the doll because it was one of them rare's that I didnt buy when I had the chance and I really regretted it, I searched the marketplace up and down until I found a really lovely person that sold me hers. I still got my little Peaches and love her to death. I dont care what other people think, if I am being a follower then so be it. I love the doll, not the people. (that sounds kinda wrong, but I hope you get what I mean by it).

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
Yes ofcourse, although mostly its not in regards to what company, its in regards to what doll is posted. If I do not like said doll/company I am not going to be checking the photo's because I already will know that I wont be too impressed. I go hunting for pictures of certain dolls, but I think thats just normal.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
Yes, my first doll was a unpopulare mold if you ask me, and I bought her without seeing any others on the forum. Mainly because I was linked the forum after I bought the first doll. But currently, I preffer seeing owner pictures before buying a doll. Every now and then I will buy one simply because I can see the potential in the company photo's and dont need owner pictures to confirm that I like said doll. But for my Ethan I actually wasnt too impressed with the stock photo's, it wasnt until I started seeing pictures that I was awestruck and realised I really really wanted him.

    13. To me the sculpt of the doll is the most important part of the purchase so I think it would be a mix. I like cute girly girl dolls and manly man dolls from various companies, some are seen here a lot and some aren't. My first doll is one of those four sisters from volks... So I really don't personally have a preference.

I would rather see dolls portrayed in more unique styles and ways than worry about does person 24 have the same doll as me.

    14. I myself am fond of the rare. Most of my dolls are pretty common, but they still mean the world to me. Yet when it comes down to it, I like to have a doll that not many have seen before. For the main reason of popular dolls aren't always the best in the long run.

Example would be, I wanted an El, and I just couldn't stop myself from wanting that doll. So, I checked out the database here on DoA and well none of the El's were lovely. A few were but to many were just enough to make me hate the doll. I still wanted the doll, but I didn't want my El to be associated with Sharpie faceups and long unusually colored hair that literally made him look like a fag or drag queen.

So I turned away from that doll, and I no longer have a desire for him.

    15. well, i chose to buy my Homme Ivan purely on the basis of what i had seen on the DoD website. i wasn't even a member of DoA when i ordered him.

it was only yesterday while i was searching for pics of him on here that i came across a thread for 'unpopular or under-rated dolls' and lo and behold, he was in that thread.

so i guess i didnt choose an unpopular doll on purpose.

on the other hand, i guess it is nice to have a doll that isn't always featured everywhere you look. but then it makes you feel a bit lonely. that's not to say that i wouldn't buy a doll just because it was popular. a lot of people own DoD's Ducan but that's not gonna stop me getting one because i find him absolutely gorgeous and i don't care how many other people own one, so long as i have one :)

    16. I'd probably rather have a less-common doll because I hate the idea of following the crowd. However, I enjoy seeing how different people can make the same doll look infinitively different, so I wouldn't mind having a popular one. ^^

    17. I don't have a doll yet, but I fell head first for CP El. It never occured to me that he was so popular.^^' But as I see it, it doesn't matter to me if a doll I want is rare, popular or not. If I like it, i like it. :)

    18. Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
Neither. I don't have a doll yet, but I decided one of the dolls I'm going to buy before I even became a member of DoA or any communities... for me, it's all about if I like the looks of the dolls. For the one I mentioned, it was love at first sight!

Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
I've never even thought about that, that seems very selfish. On the second part... well, to be honest, I have thought about that, and I came to the conclusion that if I love the doll, I love the doll, it doesn't matter what other people have.

Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
I don't really have a favourite company... each company has their (in my opinion) beautiful dolls, and... less beautiful dolls.

Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
Yes! I'm planning on buying a Soudoll Kid Charlotte, and I haven't seen her anywhere. That might be because she's relatively new, but still.
However, I think it's an advantage to have seen several pictures, to see what it looks like with other faceups and styles and such. That way, you can see your doll from a new light.

    19. I can answerer this! ^^
I can take CP EL as an great example too. I have liked that mold vary much, you see it here on the forum often and I often think it looks great! So too the point I thought of getting him as a first doll. But the I felt like even if I like the mold very much and all, I didn't want him cause everyone els had him. So I ended up buying Seorin instead ^^ Not too many people have him, so he won the battle over EL ^^ Soo, I guess I like molds that not every else has :)

    20. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
Rarity tends to interest me more just because I wonder why the doll is not well-liked and whether or not I can make the doll mold more popular.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
I would hope that I would receive gallery views in any conditions. There is virtually nothing that would make me not want a doll! If people think I am following a crowd, that's fine by me.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
I tend to look at threads more if they have a similar company doll because I'm always on the look out for new clothes or inspiration.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
I tend to do a lot of research, so I would be cautious about doing so. I need to know every minute detail!
