1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Rare or popular: discuss your preference

Jul 25, 2007

    1. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
Probably neither for me, unless it depends whether I liked that rare or popular doll.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
No I wouldn't buy a doll just to get more popular or more gallery views. I buy them for myself and I don't post pics of my dolls either. If people like to judge and think I'm a follower because of certain dolls I buy, then I let them assume what they want.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
I'm not a fan of CP doll's to be honest, quite the opposite, unless there was a of their dolls that really captured me, then yes I would. Other than that, I tend to lean towards the Volks dolls.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
It depends whether if I like it or not, if I did, and if it wasn't on the forums, yes I would buy it.

    2. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?

Depends on what you have in mind when you're buying the doll. If you want a companion sort of doll and you pick one of the less popular or harder-to-get molds you might find difficulty later buying stuff for them because no one makes clothes in quite their size and everything you get is just too wide at the shoulder or too tight at the bust or so on.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?

Nah. Sacrificing your creativity impulses for popularity makes you miserable in the end.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.

Sorta? In spirit? I'm guilty of clicking on threads that feature my favourite molds far more than others, it just happens that the CP molds aren't in that group.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?

Only if I could find user pictures and information about how the doll poses, what the resin's like, and so on elsewhere. At least with the more popular dolls any issues with them are already known and chances are people have come up with fixes.

    3. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?

I realy do not care if the doll I buy is a rare, popular, LE or whatever sculpt. I buy the dolls because I like it.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?

no getting the most gallery views for me is not a part of how I see the hobby, being afraid to be seen as a follower if a doll might alreddy be sold 1000+ times? nope it just means the company did a good job making a sculpt that appeals to a lot of people.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.

well yes I am guilty of this but not perticularly for CP dolls, I will click more on molds I like, artist I like, or certain company's I like. mostly I am guilty to clicking DOD, Dollshe & Iplehouse threads a lot more than any other.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?

well for my first doll seeing him on forum in owner pictures made me fall in love with him (seeing that I had only seen him before on luts and I hated the face up he had there) so I do try to see a doll on the forum first. but my Tatiana I bought..... I have only seen pictures of the LE whilst I ordered the basic myself.

    4. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
I prefer to buy the dolls that aren't so much rare, just underated and underloved. Whatever I do, I like to be different but I don't do it to be popular. I do it because it makes the dolls my own.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
I never think about getting gallery views since I've only posted in this gallery once. If i want a popular doll, i'll get it but do a completely new take on it and make it original in my own way. Like my Nolen (senior delf bliss - see DA if you want to know what i mean) XD

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
Good god no! XDDDD I always look for imaginative titles, underloved dolls or people I know just are going to post beautiful pictures/unique dolls. I don't have a favorite company as such, my boys are quite diverse :)

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
I bought Zashin (my lance) based on company pictures alone.

    5. To answer all three questions in a nut-shell:

Amusingly enough, collecting BJDs and BJDs in general are still something that I consider as a light hobby on the side--don't kill me for that, please. I just barely remember the names of certain sculpts and gather information that my room mate feeds to me--other than that I am completely hopeless.

I guess you can say that I started this hobby because I wanted to make dolls that looked like my original characters and these ball jointed dolls are magnificent when it comes to capturing beauty. I'll hunt and hunt just to find the right type of face, and unless it SCREAMS that certain character, then I do not care in the slightest bit what sculpt a certain doll is, rare or popular or what-have-you.

    6. To me an ultra popular mold is less desirable... but that is simply my opinion. I once wanted a DOD Shall, but I see her everywhere. She doesn't seem so special any more. :(

I don't want to sound snobby...but I don't want to spend so much money on a doll that doesn't FEEL right... if you know what I mean. I also want to make is clear that I am not bashing Shall owners. I still adore her and if it is right for you than do it ^_^.

That all said, I would buy any mold that feels right. lol something I have a connection too. if it happened to be a doll like Souldoll's Mayu ( which seems to be popular. for the time i have been watching her( about a month) she has already sold out once) that I loved than I would still get her, regardless ( and I plan too)

so for me i guess it depends on how much I love the doll.

    7. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?

Personally, I'd probably be more inclined to buy a rarer one, but I didn't really think about popularity when I was trying to choose a sculpt. Maybe subconsciously I'm less attracted to the ones that are more common, because I'd like my doll to have a greater scope of unused styles/colour schemes available, but really it all comes down to what features I like and seem to fit the character. There are some popular molds that I really love, such as CP Chiwoo, but then others that I'm not as fond of.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?

No to both of those questions. I mean, I suppose it'd be nice to get more gallery views, but I'd rather be truly happy with something that I like and feels good personally, that I could enjoy even if I was to never able to go on DoA again. What's more, tastes and trends change within a fandom itself, so some day that doll might not even be popular anymore. xD For the second question here, I might decide not to get a doll because it is very popular for the same reasons as the top question, but not because I'm afraid to be seen as a follower. Really, I'm sick of people in real life branding "poser" and things like that everywhere. How do they know the real reason why the person acts similarly to other people? That it's not a coincedence or perhaps they truly thought the idea was original to them, or that it's just something they happen to like too? Having social anxiety problems, it could be a big issue for me, but thankfully I don't worry too much about what someone I am completely unfamiliar with people may try to deduce from my preferences.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.

I like dolls from certain companies more than others in general, but really it's an individual-doll basis.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?

I'd probably want to see some kind of owner pics or see one in real life, to make sure that I would honestly like him or her. They're just so expensive and I like to take the time to really consider what I do.

    8. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
      The popularity does not matter^^

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
It does not matter how many gallery views I get and if someone wants to regard me as a follower- his/her problem, not mine.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
      No, I randomly click around^^

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
I'm not really sure because they tend to turn out different from the promo-pics so I fear not to be satisfied.

    9. can't be bothered reading 18 pages of replies so i'll just answer.

the only reason I will EVER buy a doll is because I like it, be it a particular company body shape, face shape, a face up, clothes whatever.

being a complete n00b, i will probably ask around on forums, or buy from a well known company (Volks or Luts for example) to make sure a doll isnt a fake.

    10. I'm picky, so the dolls I like are the dolls I like :) When I was originally looking at BJD companies, I really wasn't in-tune to the fanbase, so I had no idea even as to which dolls were popular or rare. All I knew was that "I liked X doll" or "I didn't like Y doll".
      However, I do admit to feeling a bit bitter(disappointed?) when I learned that my doll is one of the more popular molds :( I'm worried that people will label me as "just a follower" even though I fell in love with the mold before discovering he was apparently popular... ;n;
But that shall never ruin my love for Camine! *A* People like the dolls they like; I don't care if you own CP or Volks, it's your doll and all that matters is that you're happy with it :)

    11. medium rare....

My tendency is to shoot for the rare ones that i love when I can get them, which sometimes leaves the standards that I love in the dust:atremblin

by george, I WILL someday get my msd ken and naripons... D: got the kun... never expected that one. haha

    12. Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?

I guess I wasn't really thinking about whether the sculpt is rare, popular or whatever.I loved the sculp, and still do as she sits in from of me now :).:aheartbea

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?

There's no way I'd buy a doll just for the pageveiws and if I like a popular doll enough to buy it,I'll end up changing it's clothes, wigs, eyes anyway ect so it's different :sweat

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.

I suppose I lean towards AS dolls, but I really don't mind looking at others too.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
If I loved it enough, then most definately. It's nice to see buyer photos too though.:dance

    13. I don't really think about how popular a doll is when I find it. If I like it, I like it, if it's a popular mold--so be it. Not like I'm going to reject dolls that aren't as popular as others or something XD

I've got a growing list of dolls I hope to someday obtain, some are very common here on DoA, and some are extremely rare. It doesn't matter to me, I just like the dolls I like ^ ^

Kinda reminds me of those kids at school that will only date the good looking ones >> That always bothered me...everyone should be treated the same way. OH-KAY! Don't want to start on that rant....

    14. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?

Neither, I buy the dolls I fall in love with. Although I do love to talk about dolls so the rarer ones make me second guess myself in wanting them.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?

      No, and No

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.

No, I usually click on the ones with dolls I want or ones with interesting titles

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?

Yes, as it is now I'm planning a girl that I've only ever seen pictures of one of her.

    15. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
That it's rare. Why? See my answer to the question below. :)

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
Yes, I am one of those people who gets turned off by the popularity of something. If a doll is popular, I might not like it because (a) I don't want to be seen as a follower and (b) it bores me when I see something that everyone is talking about. I tend to want to deviate away from the majority.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
(What's CP? Haha sorry for the noob question.) About playing favorites in general though, yes, of course. Especially since I'm a genuine newbie to all of this, and I only know of DODs and SDs, I'm more inclined to view those dolls instead of dolls from other companies that I don't know about yet.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
Yes, it's possible, especially if I like a doll.

Overall, I'd buy a doll if I liked it... regardless of anything else. These are merely just factors in swaying my decision in favor of or against a certain doll. :)

    16. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
Neither. I lean towards dolls that pique my interest in terms of what type of character their face shape shows.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?

No, I would never buy a more popular doll just to get views. I wouldn't choose to not buy a doll because I "believe" it's too popular either. I could always mod the popular doll to make it one of a kind.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.

I'm more likeley to click gallery threads with a catchy title. I don't really pay attention to the particular doll models although it helps to know what I'm looking at.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
Probably. But I became familiar with both companies I bought my dolls from with the help of forum member reviews.

    17. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
Neither. The 'rare' dolls are often right out of my budget anyway and as for the 'popular', well I'm the wait and see collector so most of my dolls are secondary market & bought well after the hype has passed.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
Not me. By the time I've bought what was a 'popular' doll, the popularity buzz has passed.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
Yes. I do like to see what the new featured dolls are by my favourite doll makers.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
No. I prefer to see real owner photos before buying.

    18. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
That it's rare, I quess, though I am not against buying popular mold if I think it lovely. BBB Sprite seems to be popular and it still belongs to my shopping list.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
No, because I am adult woman with my own tastes, and I will buy dolls I simply like:)

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
No, more likely if they are made by user who has done lovely work with her/his doll. It's the user who makes doll unique/worth viewing.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
Yes, but I would have worked hard first finding if there was pics of that doll, afterall. I also would have looked info about company etc.

    19. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?

Neither! As long as I love the mold, I don't care what anyone else thinks of it. :sweat

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?

I don't mind not getting many gallery views and I'm not afraid to be seen as a follower. I rarely take pictures of my dolls anyway because my camera doesn't like to focus on them!

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.

CP? Never! I am partial to Volks dolls and I'm more likely to look at them, though. I also enjoy looking at other molds I've seen before, ones I've never heard of before, and random tinies.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?

I don't think so. I bought my F-34 girl with only Volks' promo pic to go by and she looks nothing like their picture! The angles of her face are very different from what I thought they'd be and I love her but I wouldn't have ordered her if I had known. I think it's better to see the dolls from different angles to know exactly what you're getting into. :)

    20. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it\'s rare or that it\'s popular?
Neither, i only buy what i like.
      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
Absolutely not, dolls are too expensive to buy what others deem as popular, i have my own taste and usually it doesnt match everyone elses lol!
      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
Sorry i am new who is CP? Am guessing with how you phrased this this is THE company to buy from in terms of popularity? I would only buy from a company if i liked their dolls.
      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
I am facing that dilemma right now, can\'t find irl pics or even any info about this particular doll except someone says she seems unpopular, seems i am the only one in the world who loves her lol! But thats ok cause i only buy what i like!</p>
