Rare or popular: discuss your preference

Jul 25, 2007

    1. I personally am going to have a Dollmore Calvin, Soom Daae, Custom House Sram, and Leeke Edgar (girl). Does that change the fact that I'm also getting a B&G Sapphira, and Little Fee Shiwoo? Or that I've considered a CP El or Yder or Breakaway?
I get what fits the character. I don't care about popularity or rarity.

    2. I think I like rare dolls...sculpts that not a lot of people have. I'm not into a lot of Volks, CP, Dollmore sculpts...but in the end I think it really depends on that specific doll and their mold, and especially the way that they are presented by the individual owner. ^^

    3. rare or not, it's not a big deal to me. When I see one that is "the one," I get her. They just have to fit me.

    4. I usually find dollfies that are appealing to me so when i like it i try to buy it. However, I do find a lot of the prettier dollfies very rare like the Momoko dollfie volks had 5 years ago, I'd really like to have her but what are the odds of having one of the 100 Momokos in the world ( actually 101 but the 1st one belongs to the actress who played Momoko.) I guess this includes that I like rare dollfies :)

    5. Truthly, If I like the doll no matter if its common or rare, and if I had the money Id buy it. Thank god these dolls are customizable

    6. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
I don't care about that one way or the other. =) I buy what I like and hope other people will like it too, if they don't, I don't care. xD It's my doll and if I bought it, I like it.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
I wouldn't buy a more popular doll for more views, no. I don't care about views at all. =o Dolls are something I do for me, not for other people. I was considering buying a Volks Sara/Megu/Nana, so no, I would say not. =P That is one of the more popular dolls seen around, and the absolutely most popular Volks head mold around. But if I wanted it, I'd still get it. (Though in the end, I decided not to get it because after awhile the roundness of the face and the bigness of the eyes started to bug me. =X)

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
Yes. ^_^;; I am totally guilty of this. Volks is my holy grail and I will click ANY gallery thread that features them. Even if it's of a Volks sculpt I don't like, I'll click it just so I can get to know other people's Volks dolls and better reconize the molds for the future.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
Yes, I would. =) I already had like 5 dolls picked out I wanted before I even found this forum, so it wasn't seeing them here that made me decide on a doll.

    7. lot of answers here that seem to be unbiased.

but admit it. a doll's popularity affects how much you want it. For me, I used to lust after fairyland, luts, and DOD. But there are so many of them that now, I feel like I had far too much cake whenever I see them.
It could go both ways though. The more I see an elfdoll, the more I love the sculpts.

    8. Not really.
I loved Kanon Louis, before I even knew if he was popular or not, rare or easy to obtain. He was one of the first dolls I saw when I started with this hobby and fell completely in love with him the moment I saw him.
Same goes for my Gomidoll Iru, my Peroth and the other dolls I have. In the case of my Peroth I bought him as soon as the pre-order started. Didn't listen nor cared what others might think about him.

I'm now saving up for the pre-order of the chibi Unoas and I guess they will become popular, just like their bigger sisters, but I don't care. I wouldn't buy a Lusis nor a Sist, because they don't appeal to me, but the little ones are exactly what I've been looking for.

That's what matters to me: Do I like the face? Do I like it enough to pay what the buyer is asking me to pay? If so, I should go and get him/her. If not, then it's not the doll for me.

    9. Rather than Rare or Popular, I try to pick sculpts I love and then make them unique. I hate seeing the same sculpt over and over again with the factory face up and they all look the same. I love when someone had take that mold and made it their own, made it unique. That's what I strive for.

    10. I have to agree with Silk on this one, both of my 60cm boys and the one I'm eyeing for my next one, you'll be hard pressed to find many of them around on the boards. Little Monica Kliff just came out last year in October and the moment I saw him I fell in love, before there were any home owner pictures to be found. It's the same now with Elysium's Jamie that I've recently come to adore, he only came out in April of this year, I've yet to find a single owner's pic and I still love him. Even my Napidoll Aesh is pretty ignored compared to Napi's Serios head. Obviously their popularity had nothing to do with my liking them since I never even knew they existed until I found their websites selling them, not because I was seeing them everywhere on DoA.

And although I do have two DoD dolls, I first discovered DoD back when I was first doing my own initial research of the hobby and finding doll companies on my own before I even joined DoA. I had no idea how much they were or weren't popular here on the boards, simply that I myself really loved them.

    11. ^_^ ohhh is rebutting allowed? (well it's debate forum, but I'd like a conformation)

    12. I like rare ones better, because the dolls are for me, and I'd like to know mine was unique, even if I didn't post pictures of it. I think the reason people choose BJDs over other dolls, is the amount of customization you can do. So I'd like to have my doll set apart from the others as much as possible. Though, if I like a doll enough, I'll buy it regardless of whether it's popular or not. Again, the doll is for me, not anyone else.

    13. I have yet to have one, but I agree with your statement.
Hoarding is fun and gives you a sense of pride :)

although I don't think only rare dolls will do this, but it does help a lot, since popular ones have more pics. (usually a good thing to have more pics, but it might feel personal like "MY doll is wearing WHAt-?" or something)

    14. Yup, it is ^^.

    15. At first i thought i would like a doll that not a lot of people had.
But when i saw my first bjd i just fell in love with her. I looked her up on here
and quite a few people had her. But it didn't bother me at all. So i think popular or not. It doesn't matter.

    16. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?

Neither? I really don't care about that, when I'm looking around at dolls. I know I will end up with some that 'everyone' has, and some that no one knows what it is because no one really has them. Its all about the doll I like and want. Scarcity on the forum or popularity is for the birds.

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?

Nope~ Not gonna buy a doll just for views, and not gonna avoid a doll just because I see them every where. I like what I like, can't help that.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.

Oh yes. Yes I am. I am more than likely to crawl into a thread with a DZ doll in it than any other doll. I just have massive heart-sparkle-love feelings for the DZ sculpts, especially several of the MSD molds.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?

If I liked it and it called too me as one of the characters from my world, I probably would. Its all about the doll. Its gotta fit in my world, or I just won't know what to do with it! XD I'm like.... "This doll.... Its cute but who would he BE?!"

    17. In my opinion, i do not care whether the doll is rare or popular, i like the doll just because i like it~
It does not matter the other reason, if i like this doll and then this doll will be rare to myself~

    18. I don't think I have a preference for a mold that is either rare or popular - if I fall in love with a doll, then that's that! Besides, even owning a popular model does not mean much because of all the customization that can be done. :)

    19. - Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?

I personally would prefer rarer ones as long as I liked the sculpt, but honestly, the most important thing to me is that I like it.... It's not like I live in DoA, so why should DoA influence what I buy?

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?

I definitely would never buy a doll for that reason @_@ but as far as the second question... Um... I dunno... maybe? If there was one of the sculpt that was particularly famous, and it was, say, an emo punk look, and that was what I would want to give my doll, I would avoid that sculpt cause it would look far to similar to that 'famous' one.

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.

Heck no. I don't actually like Luts dolls and honestly skip over those. I personally don't get the obsession. However, I AM more likely to click a DoD one haha.

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?

Of course, so long as it came from a reputable company and the sculpt wasn't banned or OT..

    20. Which is more appealing when buying a doll: that it's rare or that it's popular?
I never care if molds are rare or not... but if they are, of course they're very welcome but even if they're popular, it doesn't bother me ^^
In fact I tend to like more unusual molds but I think it's just a coincidence...

      - Would you ever buy a more popular doll knowing that it could get you more gallery views? Conversely, would you ever choose not to buy a doll because you believe it is too popular and you are afraid to be seen as a follower?
Nah, I would never ever buy a doll just to have more gallery views, in fact I just post to the gallery section, to share my dolls images, but never for comments...
I remember that when I was a newbie I was always looking for good pics of the dolls I was interested in, and now I think it's nice sharing mine to be helpful to other people ^^
And about the second question, no I would never care buying a popular doll and be considered a follower, if I like a mold I save money to buy it ^^

      - Are you more likely to click gallery threads because they feature a CP doll? Be honest! Nothing wrong with having a favourite company.
First of all CP is just not my case, I'm not a huge fan of them...
Secondly, yes, I more likely check galleries of molds I like or I'm interested in, ocasionally I also open threads of unknown dolls, because I'm curious about their name or because they're wearing clothes of company I like and such...

      - Would you buy a doll that you had not seen on the forums?
mmh I don't know... usually I really need to see customized dolls to make up my mind about their real look, so I guess the answer is no, I never trust companies pictures :moo
